New Zealand MP suspended after pushing for sanctions on 'Israel'

Roya News8 hours ago
Greens co-leader Chloe Swarbrick has been suspended from the New Zealand Parliament for one week after urging her colleagues to back a bill that would impose sanctions on 'Israel' over its actions in Palestine.
Speaking during a parliamentary debate on Tuesday, Swarbrick called on the government to adopt the Greens' Unlawful Occupation of Palestine Sanctions Bill, saying, 'If we find six of 68 government MPs with a spine, we can stand on the right side of history.'
Speaker Gerry Brownlee described her remarks as 'completely unacceptable' and demanded that Swarbrick withdraw her statement and issue an apology. She refused, prompting her temporary ejection from the chamber.
The legislation requires the support of six government MPs to pass, a threshold Swarbrick highlighted in her appeal.
Her speech followed the government's announcement on Monday that it would consider recognizing an independent Palestinian state. 'We have so much further to go than nearly recognizing the statement of Palestine, as we should have done 76 years ago,' Swarbrick said, emphasizing New Zealand's responsibility under the Genocide Convention.

'Salah Effect': UEFA announces Gaza aid initiative for children after criticism

Following public pressure and a challenge from football superstar Mohamed Salah, UEFA has launched a new humanitarian initiative to provide aid to children in Gaza. The announcement, made through the UEFA Foundation for Children, comes amidst debate over the organization's political stance and its response to the death of a prominent Palestinian footballer. The catalyst for the initiative was the killing of Suleiman al-Obeid, a 41-year-old former Palestinian national team player known as the "Palestinian Pele". According to a statement from the Palestine Football Association (PFA), al-Obeid, a husband and father of five, was killed by 'Israel' while waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip. An 'Israeli' military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, later claimed that an "initial review" found no records of any incident involving al-Obeid and requested more information. UEFA initially responded with a brief social media post paying tribute to al-Obeid as "a talent who gave hope to countless children" but did not mention the circumstances of his death. Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, who reposted the tribute on X, said, "can you tell us how he died, where, and why?". In response, the UEFA Foundation for Children announced new partnerships with three humanitarian organizations, Médecins du Monde, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and Handicap International, to deliver "vital humanitarian help for the children of Gaza". UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, who also serves as chairman of the foundation, stated that children are "innocent" and that it is the organization's duty "to stand beside children when they need us". The aid efforts will include medical care, psychosocial support, food distribution, and education on the risks of explosive remnants. UEFA noted that this new initiative is an extension of its previous work in other conflict zones, including Ukraine, Sudan, and Yemen. However, the initiative has not quieted all criticism. Some observers and human rights advocates have pointed to a perceived double standard, contrasting UEFA's actions with the swift and strong sanctions it imposed on Russian clubs following the invasion of Ukraine.

Brussels Airport ground staff unions refuse to service 'Israel'-bound flights

Unions representing workers at Alyzia, a ground services company operating at Brussels Airport, have called on management to stop providing services to 'Israeli' airline El Al and any other carriers flying to or from 'Israel'. In a letter sent to company leadership, union representatives demanded that employees be given the choice to opt out of handling baggage or cargo for these flights. The move follows Brussels Airlines' decision to resume flights to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, August 13, a plan that unions say should only proceed with fully voluntary participation from staff. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ACV Puls (@acvpuls) The unions' stance comes amid a growing movement across Europe's aviation sector opposing 'Israel's' military campaign in Gaza. In France, airport unions have pushed for a halt to arms shipments to 'Israel' via Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Brussels Airlines has confirmed that flights to Tel Aviv will operate with 'volunteer crews,' acknowledging heightened sensitivities among employees and the broader public. Brussels, home to a significant North African community, has seen increased tensions since the escalation of violence in Gaza. In an official joint statement, the Alyzia unions, including Pulse, CNE, and ACV-CSC Transcom, said: 'Since October 2023, genocide has been underway in Gaza and the West Bank against the Palestinian population. Serious violations of humanitarian law and international law continue. Despite this, some airlines have decided to resume flights to Tel Aviv (TLV). Our affiliates refuse to participate in these operations. We will not serve these flights.' The unions argued that allowing 'Israeli' officials or soldiers accused of war crimes to travel freely through Brussels is unacceptable, framing their refusal as a matter of 'moral principles and respect for human rights' rather than religion or ethnicity. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ACV Puls (@acvpuls) They pledged opposition to 'all forms of racism, anti-Semitism, and terrorism,' but insisted on taking a stand for 'international law and human dignity.' The statement concluded, 'When politicians restrict themselves to crocodile tears over the fate of Gaza's residents, workers take action. Together we stand. No treatment of flights to Tel Aviv as long as the genocide in Gaza continues.'

Chain of 'Israeli' commanders behind Anas Al-Sharif's killing revealed

The Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) and the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) have filed a joint case to the International Criminal Court (ICC) accusing top 'Israeli' military and political leaders of ordering the assassination of journalist Anas Al-Sharif and at least five other Palestinian reporters in Gaza. They published the announcement in a report they titled 'The Hunt for Anas Al-Sharif's Killers.' The filing takes the form of an Article 15 Communication, a legal mechanism under the Rome Statute that allows individuals, organizations, or states to submit information about alleged crimes to the International Criminal Court. Unlike a general complaint, an Article 15 Communication is designed to trigger the ICC Prosecutor's preliminary examination, potentially leading to a full investigation and prosecutions. In this case, the submission lays out, step by step, the chain of command and operational decisions that investigators say led to Al-Sharif's killing outside Al-Shifa Hospital, where he was working from a clearly marked press tent. PCHR's evidence ties his death to a broader, documented pattern: journalists in Gaza are first branded as 'terrorists' by 'Israeli' officials, then eliminated in targeted strikes. This pattern is reflected in the cases of Hussam Shabat, Ismail Al-Ghoul, Ahmed Al-Louh, Hamza Wael Al-Dahdouh, and Samer Abu Daqa, each assassinated after such public vilification. Tracing the chain of command HRF's investigation followed the strike from 'the moment a drone camera locked onto Al-Sharif's position to the instant the missile hit.' Through operational pattern analysis, signals intelligence, and military expertise, the chain of responsibility identified includes: Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir – IDF Chief of the General Staff Maj.-Gen. Tomer Bar – Commander of the Israeli Air Force Maj.-Gen. Yaniv Asor – Southern Command Commander Brig.-Gen. Yossi Sariel – Former Commander of Unit 8200 'General A.' – Current Commander of Unit 8200 Palmachim Airbase Commander (undisclosed) 'Black Snake' Squadron Commander (undisclosed) Col. Avichay Adraee – IOF Arabic-language spokesperson, accused of orchestrating a smear campaign against Al-Sharif At the political level, the report points to 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of promoting a strategy to eliminate journalists as part of the Gaza assault. 'The smear before the strike' HRF also revealed what it calls 'the smear before the strike', a campaign to delegitimize Al-Sharif long before his killing. For nearly two years, Adraee used social media to brand him a Hamas operative, mock his emotional reporting, and frame his journalism as propaganda. PCHR says similar campaigns preceded the killings of Hamza Al-Dahdouh, Ismail Al-Ghoul, and Hussam Shabat. Legal accusations and demands The ICC filing accuses those named of: The submission demands that the ICC prosecutor: Issue arrest warrants for the named officials. Expand Netanyahu's warrant to include crimes against journalists. Add all 220+ journalist killings in Gaza to the ICC's Palestine investigation. 'This is not symbolic litigation,' said HRF Chairman Dyab Abou Jahjah. 'The assassination of Anas Al-Sharif was so blunt, so arrogant, and so drenched in contempt for human life, truth, the legal order, and humanity itself, that it cannot and will not be allowed to pass into silence.'
