2025 WJ McKell Cup: Jeff Penza rides Je Zous for Chris Waller
Prolific hoop Jeff Penza and champion trainer Chris Waller will be out to orchestrate another feature race heist with promising import Je Zous in Saturday's Listed WJ McKell Cup (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
Waller has called upon one of his most reliable sources to pilot several of his key chances on home turf, including his lightly-raced new addition, with many of Sydney's big guns either on holidays or riding on Group 1 Tatt's Tiara day at Eagle Farm.
Penza and Waller have made for a formidable combination for many years with the hoop riding 80 winners for the champion conditioner – the second-most of any trainer he has ridden for.

It was only recently when the dynamic duo combined for a shock stakes win in May when $61 outsider Summer Flame scored an upset win in the Listed Denise's Joy Stakes at Scone.
'We've had a terrific run together,' Penza said.
'It's always a pleasure riding his horses.
'They are always extremely well trained and tractable.
'Chris at Rosehill is always going to have plenty of runners and he always looks after me on provincial Saturdays.'

Je Zous is only in her first preparation in Australia after racing with success in Europe, winning at Group 3 level in the Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes at Gowran Park last year.
The Waller stable has indicated Je Zous could be a potential Caulfield Cup hopeful and the Zoustar mare could take a significant step in that direction in the McKell Cup for which she is rated a $26 chance.
'She looks to have some really nice form overseas,' Penza said.
'She is only having her second run in Australia obviously and is second up there on Saturday.
'It was short of her best the other day (1400m) so the step up to 2000m should suit her.
'It sounds like she is a horse they have some time for.'

Penza has six rides in total for Waller across the card.
A rider of more than 2300 winners, the talented hoop is closing the half century mark for this season and has a strong book at Moruya to prepare for Saturday's card.
The 55-year-old is enjoying life in the saddle as much as ever.
'My body is feeling really good,' Penza said.
'If you don't enjoy it, you won't do it very well but I am enjoying it. I am very happy.
'I had a bit of a lean trot there for a while but it comes and goes and I think the last month or two months have been really good.
'Hopefully I can continue that into next season and have a good season again.'
Penza will be in line to chase a Cup double on Saturday's program with the experienced hoop set to connect with Speycaster ($6.50) in the Irresistible Pools Benchmark 90 Stayer's Cup (2400m).

Speycaster's last win came in the same race last year after finishing seventh in the Listed Winter Cup the previous start. He was fourth in the same lead-up this year.
'Speycaster put in an improved performance last start and the 2400m should suit him,' Penza said.
'He did win this race last year.'
Penza also combines with Maori Chief (race 3), Changing Colours (race 4), Vanessi (race 5) and Lenapi Vibe (race 8).
Bookies rate Changing Colours ($4.80) as the best of those chances, with the daughter of The Autumn Sun set to return to Sydney after a run of three straight close seconds in Melbourne, the most recent behind Suances at Sandown.

'Changing Colours has had those three seconds in a row down in Melbourne so she is knocking on the door,' Penza said.
'I don't know her too well given she has been racing in Melbourne but her form is very consistent so hopefully she can step up in Sydney.'
Maori Chief ($14) can reap the benefits of an inside draw in the Captivant @ Kia Ora Benchmark 72 Handicap (1400m) while Vanessi ($15) is second-up in the TAB Benchmark 72 Handicap (1100m).
Lenape Vibe ($41) is an outside chance in Asahi Super Dry Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m).

'Do I 100% think that I was the right person to carry this team forward? Yes, because I've done it before ... but that's the decision the board made, and I accept that decision. Aussie Archie Wilson breaks down over family separation at college presser

Australian Archie Wilson has broken down in tears at a pre-season press conference, when talking about the difficulties of leaving his family behind to chase his American football dream. At the very end of his media appearance, the Nebraska Huskers' 2025 recruit was asked by a reporter: 'You're living all the way across the world from them (his family), what's it like? The first time you're away from them?' To which Wilson's emotions got the better of him as he responded: 'That part is hard, I'm sorry,' as he broke into tears. 'I love them a lot, I've got two little brothers, a mum and dad. 'That's the tough part about being here. × Archie Wilson broke down at Huskers' press conference. 'I love them a lot, and I miss them. 'They know this is what's best for me. 'It's good I can still talk to them over the phone, they're coming to the first few games, so I'm looking forward to that.' A Nebraska freshman, Wilson, 18, relocated to the USA this past American Summer from his home in Frankston South, on the Peninsula of Melbourne, when he was drafted via Prokick Australia. The program has produced 29 punters bound for NFL or CFL (Canadian Football League) contracts. The teenage punter grew up playing AFL for most of his life before making the switch to NFL, lining up for Haileybury College in a defensive role. Archie Wilson joined the Huskers' this past American Summer. Special teams co-ordinator Mike Elker championed the Aussie's talent following a Huskers' practice session. 'Man, that guy is special. I mean, he truly is,' Ekeler said. 'He's 18 years old, leaves home for the first time, goes to a different country, and leaves his family which he's extremely close to. 'What coach (Matt Rhule) said about him is accurate. That kid knows every one of his teammates, and his teammates love him because of the energy he brings in the building, not just because of what he can do with the football.' Swans coach backs Heeney, Grundy for All-Australian selection

The Sydney Swans will miss the finals after making last season's grand final but should have at least two All-Australians, according to coach Dean Cox. He's declared superstar Isaac Heeney's season has been 'as good a year' as any contenders, with ruckman Brodie Grundy also vying for a blazer, but the first-year coach knows his team hasn't won enough games to have many Swans players spoken about. But amid the 'frustration and disappointment' at failing to back up last season's effort, Cox was adamant Heeney, who has kicked 35 goals, including five against reigning premiers Brisbane last week in a revenge win, had been a shining light and deserved recognition with a third All-Australian nod. 'I've looked at stats of players that are being talked about in the All-Australian team and All-Australian captains, Isaac's had as good a year as all of them,' Cox said. 'Unfortunately, we haven't won enough games for a specific player to be spoken about. He's been phenomenal for our footy club. Grundy, who has been sidelined with concussion, has been a powerhouse in the ruck this season and is vying with Melbourne captain Max Gawn for the starting ruck spot in the team of the year. He could also earn a place on the bench, with a club best and fairest award also in his sights. Cox said his team not playing finals had started to sink in with the coaches and players, but a strong finish to the season, backing up the last-start win over the Lions against premiership contenders Geelong this weekend, would bring some momentum for 2026. 'There's a bit of frustration and disappointment that we're not playing finals. That's what we start every year chasing and the reality is we can't do that. Once we found that out it was deflating, it's what the players strive so hard to get to,' Cox said. 'We'll reflect when the season finishes why we didn't get there. There are a number of things we need to work on. We needed to work on them in the back half of the year but also the pre-season as well.'
