Operators of app-based cabs suspend strike for three days

News182 days ago
Mumbai, Jul 19 (PTI) The Maharashtra Gig Kamgar Manch on Saturday suspended the ongoing strike of drivers of app-based taxis in Mumbai and other cities of Maharashtra for three days.
Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, president of the association, told PTI that the strike, which started on Wednesday, was being suspended till next Tuesday to give time to the Maharashtra government to respond to their demands.
'We have only suspended the strike, not called it off. If our demands are not accepted by Tuesday, services will be shut again," he said.
At a meeting with the association's representatives, transport department officials sought time till Tuesday, said Kshirsagar.
In the meantime, app-based cabs will charge the rate fixed by the government for the conventional black-and-yellow taxis and not the rate appearing in the apps of cab aggregators (such as Ola or Uber), he said.
He also urged commuters and drivers to use www.onlymeter.in, a fare calculation website based on official government rates, to avoid overcharging.
The Maharashtra Gig Kamgar Manch has demanded rationalisation of fares, bringing fares on par with those of the black-and-yellow metered cabs, prohibition of bike taxis, a cap on permits of black-and-yellow cabs and auto rickshaws, formation of a welfare board for drivers of app-based cabs and enactment of the `Maharashtra Gig Workers' Act' on the lines of other states. India Become Top Buyer Of Malaysia's Oil Palm Seed

Kuala Lumpur: India has emerged as Malaysia's largest importer of germinated oil palm seeds, with demand surging as the country accelerates efforts to boost domestic palm oil production and reduce import dependency. India imported 3.03 million tonnes of palm oil from Malaysia in 2024, representing 17.9 per cent of Malaysia's total palm oil exports and making it the top destination for Malaysian palm oil. "There has been a noticeable increase in demand for Malaysian oil palm seeds, particularly from India," Malaysian Palm Oil Board Director General Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir told PTI, citing India's push to expand domestic production. India aims to rapidly expand palm oil cultivation to 1 million hectares by 2025-26 and achieve nearly 2.8 million tonnes of crude palm oil production by 2029-30 under its National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm scheme. The country currently has about 370,000 hectares under palm oil cultivation as of mid-2025, focusing particularly on northeastern states and island regions. The seed trade, however, remains largely informal, with supplies conducted on an ad hoc basis through one-off consignments without formal contracts or long-term agreements, Kadir noted. Most transactions happen through business-to-business arrangements where Malaysian exporters provide quality planting materials and technical expertise. "Malaysia welcomes this development as it reflects confidence in the quality of our seeds and our longstanding partnership with India," he said. The development comes even as Malaysia's palm oil exports to India have moderated following New Delhi's recent reduction in tariffs on crude palm oil. Kadir said India's tariff adjustments are part of broader policy measures to manage domestic supply and keep cooking oil prices affordable for consumers. "While Malaysia has seen some moderation in export volumes to India, we remain a key and reliable supplier, and the Indian market continues to be a priority," he said. Malaysia is engaging stakeholders to strengthen its position in food manufacturing and hospitality segments where demand remains strong, while promoting sustainable palm oil certified under the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil standard. The Malaysian Palm Oil Board has developed new high-yield varieties through breeding programs that can potentially produce over 30 tonnes of fresh fruit bunches per hectare annually, nearly double Malaysia's national average of 15.47-16.73 tonnes recorded between 2020-2023. The improved varieties also have slower height growth, extending economic lifespan from 25 years to over 30 years while facilitating harvesting operations. Current Malaysian commercial seeds are suitable for cultivation in India with proper farming practices and adequate irrigation, Kadir said, noting the materials have performed well under tropical conditions similar to many Indian regions with sufficient rainfall. Research efforts are underway to develop climate-resilient varieties with improved drought tolerance, though none have been commercially released yet, he added.

New Income Tax Bill 2025: Parliamentary Panel Suggests Changes in TDS Refunds, Trust Taxation

Last Updated: One of the key suggestions is that individual taxpayers should be allowed to claim TDS refunds even if they file their income tax return after the due date, without facing fines. A Parliamentary panel reviewing the draft Income Tax Bill, 2025 has recommended key changes related to TDS refund rules and the taxation of trusts, especially those with both religious and charitable objectives. The Select Committee of the Lok Sabha, chaired by BJP MP Baijayant Panda, tabled its report in the Lower House on Monday, proposing amendments to the Bill that aims to replace the Income Tax Act, 1961, which has been in force for over six decades. One of the key suggestions made by the panel is that individual taxpayers should be allowed to claim TDS refunds even if they file their income tax return after the due date, without facing penalties. The panel noted that the current provision requiring timely filing for refunds could unfairly impact small taxpayers whose income is below the taxable limit but have had tax deducted at source. 'In such scenarios, the law should not compel a return merely to avoid penal provisions for non-filing," the panel said. 'The committee, therefore, recommend to remove sub-clause (1)(ix) from Clause 263 to provide flexibility for allowing refund claims in cases where the return is not filed in due time." This, the panel observed, would adversely affect religious-cum-charitable trusts, a category recognised under the existing law. Under Section 115BBC of the Income Tax Act, 1961, such hybrid entities are granted broader exemptions, as long as the donations are not specifically directed toward educational or medical institutions run by the same trust. 'While the Bill's stated aim is textual simplification, the committee observe a critical omission concerning religious-cum-charitable trusts, which could have substantial adverse impacts on a large segment of India's NPO sector," it said. 'The committee strongly urge the reintroduction of a provision analogous to the explanation found in Section 115BBC of the 1961 Act." It added that many such institutions receive donations via traditional means like collection boxes, where donor identification is not practically possible, and taxing such contributions would be unjust. The panel also opposed taxing the gross receipts of NPOs, stating it contradicts the principle of taxing only real income. It recommended that the term 'income' be reintroduced in place of 'receipts' to ensure that only net income is subject to tax. Overall, the committee's report flags the need for greater clarity and fairness in the new tax regime, especially in areas affecting small taxpayers and the non-profit sector. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Gold rises Rs 250 to Rs 99,020/10 g; silver climbs Rs 500 to Rs 1.11 lakh/kg

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) Gold prices rose by Rs 250 to Rs 99,020 per 10 grams in the national capital on Monday amid a pick-up in demand by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association. On Friday, the precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had closed at Rs 98,770 per 10 grams. In the national capital, gold of 99.5 per cent purity advanced by Rs 250 to Rs 98,550 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Monday. It had closed at Rs 98,300 per 10 grams in the previous market close. Meanwhile, silver prices appreciated Rs 500 to Rs 1,11,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes). On Friday, the white metal had ended at Rs 1,10,500 per kg. Bullion traders said that pick-up in demand helped the rally in the precious metal. Globally, spot gold rose by USD 15.16 or 0.45 per cent to USD 3,365.56 per ounce. 'Gold edged higher on Monday amid uncertainties related to US tariff policy and a pullback in the US Dollar, which provided support for precious metals prices," Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said. Gandhi further stated traders will closely monitor the US trade agenda alongside key US macroeconomic data, including provisional PMI figures, weekly unemployment claims, and durable goods orders. Additionally, spot silver went up 0.73 per cent to USD 38.47 per ounce in the overseas markets. 'Investors will closely track the US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech for further cues on interest rate direction and in turn trajectory for the bullion prices in the near term," Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, said.
