Grace Grocholski, Mallory Heyer guide No. 23 Minnesota women past Wisconsin 71-50
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Grace Grocholski scored 17 points, Mallory Heyer posted a double-double and No. 23 Minnesota pulled away in the second half to beat Wisconsin 71-50 on Sunday, handing the Badgers their eighth straight loss.
Grocholski made 5 of 8 shots with four 3-pointers and 3 of 4 free throws for the Golden Gophers (18-3, 6-3 Big Ten Conference). Heyer totaled 15 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Sophie Hart matched season highs with 16 points and four assists. Tori McKinney scored 14 with three steals.
Serah Williams totaled 16 points and six rebounds to pace the Badgers (10-10, 1-8). She also committed eight of Wisconsin's 23 turnovers.
The game was tied at 14-all after one quarter and it was all even at 28-apiece at halftime. Grocholski scored half of Minnesota's total at the break, while Williams had 12 points for Wisconsin. Grocholski made 4 of 6 shots in the first half while her teammates sank only 5 of 27. The Golden Gophers missed 14 of 17 tries from 3-point range. The Badgers shot 50% from the floor but took nine fewer shots. Minnesota scored 10 points off of 11 Wisconsin turnovers.
Hart made four free throws for the only points in the first two minutes of the third quarter to put Minnesota on top. Heyer had back-to-back baskets and Grocholski followed with a 3-pointer in a 15-2 run to give the Golden Gophers their largest lead to that point at 43-30. Minnesota outscored Wisconsin 45-22 in the second half.
Wisconsin will host No. 23 Michigan on Wednesday. Minnesota travels to play No. 4 Southern California on Thursday.

"Tough not having my car quite yet, so I haven't really gotten a chance to go out and explore that much," smiled new St. Paul Saints starting pitcher Mick Abel. Abel is in new territory. He is a former first-round, 15th overall draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies. The Minnesota Twins acquired him two weeks ago in the trade that sent closer Jhoan Duran to Philadelphia. "When it happened, I was like, 'Oh wow.' It kinda hit me like a ton of bricks," said Abel. "It was hard saying 'see ya' to a lot of the staff and a lot of my teammates, just because I've been with them for so long. You build that many relationships over a five-year span, and in the snap of your fingers, they're gone." The Twins traded a whopping 10 players ahead of the July 31 deadline. Abel will always be tied to that landmark day. Derek Falvey, president of baseball operations for the Twins, says the goal is not to bottom out, but reload for next year. If that works, guys like Abel will be key. "In some cases, some of these guys were up in the big leagues, sent down to the minor leagues and have a plan for some adjustments they wanna make," said Falvey. "We wanna make sure they're settled, they're on the right track, that we all align on a plan. And hopefully we'll see more of them as the season wears on." Abel made his big league debut earlier this season. He was sent down on the Fourth of July carrying a 5.04 ERA. "It was really formative, just to who I am right now," said Abel. "I go up and I think I got a little too curious, dove a little too deep into what I should be doing every week. I kind of got away from my strengths. So, when I got sent back down, the message was, go back to doing what you do well." Expect to see Abel get called up later in August or in September. The Twins want to see what they got. "Their biggest message to me was, 'Let's get you acclimated,'" said Abel. "Let's get you working on a couple different things and go from there."

Carlos Rodon did the heavy lifting on the mound, allowing one hit over seven crisp innings. The Yankees didn't just win; they looked like themselves again. Big picture, Judge's power has to sit in the middle of everything the Yankees do. His presence changes pitch selection, lineup protection and how managers script late innings. When he isn't a threat to drive the ball, opposing teams nibble elsewhere and the whole offense shrinks. So seeing him get back to crushing homers is a relief. Even with the recent lull, his season line remains elite. He has an average north of .330, an OPS over 1.100, and now thirty-eight homers. Those are the numbers of a hitter that set the tone. Efton Chism won't practice for Patriots Monday with undisclosed injury
Efton Chism III will not practice for the Patriots on Monday, two days after the undrafted receiver was the star of New England's preseason win over the Vikings in Minnesota. Chism is dealing with an undisclosed injury, and will be evaluated by the team leading up to Thursday night's preseason finale against the New York Giants. Chism made a number of big plays for the offense in New England's 20-12 win over the Vikings on Saturday, when he shed several tackles and hauled in a team-high six receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown. He shook off a number of would-be tacklers on his way to the end zone on his 12-yard touchdown reception in the second half, a play that likely locked in Chism's spot on the 53-man roster. But the receiver also suffered his injury on that play, as CBS cameras showed Patriots team trainers tending to Chism on the bench following his score. Chism did not return to the game after he found the end zone for a second straight week. Chism has been a beast for the Patriots in his two preseason games, amassing 12 receptions for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He did the bulk of the heavy lifting on the team's third-quarter touchdown drive in Minnesota, accounting for 62 of New England's 88 yards on his four receptions. He hauled in three of his six receptions on third down during Saturday's win. Vrabel also said fellow rookie receiver Kyle Williams, who suffered a head injury on Saturday, will not practice Monday. It's unclear if Williams or Chism will take the field for Tuesday's final practice of the week or Thursday's preseason finale in New Jersey. Vrabel also announced cornerback Christian Gonzalez and veteran receiver Kendrick Bourne will not practice this week as both players work their way back from injury.
