WhatsApp Will Soon Let You Share Usernames To Chat With Other People: Here's How
WhatsApp usernames will stop people from sharing their phone number with strangers and use this safer option for chatting.
WhatsApp uses numbers to let you chat with other people but that will finally change as the messaging app finally brings support for usernames. We have heard about the feature for a few years now but once again WaBetaInfo claims the platform is developing the tool internally which could give a big privacy boost for its users.
The tests are being done on the WhatsApp beta app for iOS devices and it won't be long before the Android version also sees some changes in this regard.
Bringing usernames will stop people from sharing their number with strangers, which has been a big privacy issue for years. Usernames can be defined by the user so that they can have a unique identity that can be freely shared with people and not worry about their phone number leaking in the public.
These changes will be important for people in WhatsApp groups and other chats that you have with businesses and other platforms. The first instance of usernames on WhatsApp being mentioned was back in 2023 and it seems we are finally getting a move on.
Having said that, the tipster suggests WhatsApp will have some rules for how the usernames are created and used on the app. The messaging platform is expected to advise users to set up a username that has at least one letter along with numbers and symbols. For some reason, WhatsApp is telling people that the username cannot start with 'www.' and you will be verified for the username, to know if that ID is available or already in use.
WhatsApp did finally launch on iPad after 15 years of giving it a miss so username will be another valuable addition to billions of users.

WhatsApp Restrictions Worldwide: From China's Full Ban to UAE's Partial Ban
Stockholm: Russia on Wednesday became the latest country to restrict some WhatsApp calls, accusing the Meta-owned platform of failing to share information in fraud and terrorism cases. Here is a list of nations restricting WhatsApp: Fully Blocked China started blocking WhatsApp in 2017, using its so-called Great Firewall to filter and block traffic with overseas servers. Chinese users rely on an alternative called WeChat. WhatsApp is generally inaccessible in North Korea, which has blocked Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and other platforms since 2016. North Korea has one of the world's most strictly controlled internet systems. Partial Blocked Russia started restricting WhatsApp from Wednesday. It had clashed with foreign tech platforms for several years over content and data storage. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has banned most applications using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services - free internet-to-internet voice and video calls - starting in 2017. However, text messaging is allowed. In 2020, authorities allowed people to make calls over WhatsApp and other internet apps on the grounds of the Expo Dubai World Fair. Qatar has not explicitly banned WhatsApp but has put restrictions on VoIP calls. Like the UAE, WhatsApp messaging still works. Egypt does not have a blanket ban on calls over WhatsApp, but has tried to throttle such communications. Jordan also has restrictions on making VoIP calls. Intermittent Bans Iran last year lifted a ban on WhatsApp as a first step to scaling back internet restrictions following years of curbing access. Turkey currently has no ban on WhatsApp, but it has in the past blocked the platform over domestic issues. Uganda banned WhatsApp and other social media platforms in 2021 as retaliation for Facebook blocking some pro-government accounts. It currently does not have a ban. Cuba temporarily restricted access to social media and messaging platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, in 2021. WhatsApp was banned from all US House of Representatives devices in June, according to a memo sent to all House staff.

What is Grok Imagine and how does it work?
Billionaire Elon Musk has announced that Grok Imagine, the image and video generation feature from his AI company xAI, is now available for free to all users in the US. This means that even users who don't subscribe to SuperGrok or Premium Plus on X (formerly Twitter) can try it out. The feature is currently in early beta and is only accessible through the Grok app, available on both iOS and Android devices. Musk shared the update during a live X Spaces session with advertisers, stating that the release is part of xAI's effort to compete with other leading AI tools like OpenAI's Sora and Google's Veo 3, which also offer advanced video generation capabilities. How can you use Grok Imagine? Grok Imagine lets users create AI-generated images and 6-second video clips using either a text prompt or an uploaded image. To use the tool, start by downloading the Grok app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. After installing and signing in, tap the Imagine tab at the top right of the screen. Here, you can type a short prompt—such as 'a panda surfing on ocean waves' or 'a spaceship landing in a desert'—and Grok will instantly generate an image based on your description. Once the image is created, you can tap on the 'Make video' option to turn it into a short animated clip. Grok offers four video styles: Normal, Fun, Custom, and the more controversial Spicy mode. The Spicy mode has already drawn criticism for allowing users to create NSFW (not safe for work) content, raising concerns about how the tool might be misused. Although still in development, Grok Imagine's free access could attract a wide range of users, giving them a chance to explore AI-generated media without needing expensive tools or paid plans. As interest in AI content creation continues to grow, this feature helps position Grok as a fun, easy, and creative option for anyone curious about the future of digital media.

Clean-up deadline for Gurugram on filth, waste, and stray cattle
Haryana urban local bodies (ULB) minister Vipul Goel and the chief minister's principal secretary Rajesh Khullar have ordered civic agencies in Gurugram to remove stray cattle from roads within 15 days, and dispose of over 300,000 tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste lying in the open within one month. Garbage in DLF Phase 1 in Gurugram on Tuesday. (HT Photo) The two officials gave the instructions during a review meeting with public works department officials on Wednesday. 'Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini said Gurugram must see visible, lasting improvements in cleanliness, infrastructure, and urban management. We are fully committed to making this happen,' said Khullar. Removal of litter, waste, stray cattle Khullar ordered that no garbage, polythene, or C&D debris should be visible on city roads, with strict action, including police involvement, against those burning waste in the open. Goel directed the civic body to improve door-to-door collection, enforce debris disposal fees at the time of building plan approval, and strengthen sanitation resources to keep public spaces garbage-free. Goel said that a WhatsApp helpline will be launched for people to report sightings of abandoned cattle, with rewards for those providing information and incentives for sanitation workers who catch and hand over animals to designated agencies. Gurugram currently has 5,000 stray cows and 1,500 bulls, according to official data. The Kamdhenu and Nandidham shelters run by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) can house an additional 500 cows and 500 bulls, while Khullar instructed that two new gaushalas be set up to expand capacity. Drainage, water supply, and sewage solutions Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) chief executive officer Shyamal Mishra briefed the meeting on drainage and water supply projects, saying that Leg-1 and Leg-2 of the city's master drainage system are linked to the Najafgarh drain, while Leg-3 is under development. Temporary drains have been installed at critical waterlogging points, leading to faster rainwater clearance in areas like Narsinghpur, he said. The projects will lead to an increase in sewage treatment capacity to 950mld (million litres per day), while drinking water supply will expand from 670mld to 1,170mld, he said. MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said 153 waterlogging sites have been addressed and a dedicated sewerage monitoring cell has identified 40 problem areas for permanent fixes. The tender for a new door-to-door garbage collection system opens on August 18, with plans for a second 400tpd (tonnes per day) C&D waste plant and three new collection centres.
