Little girl was so excited to be on vacation she ran ahead of her family at stunning cliff...then tragedy struck

Daily Mail11-07-2025
A family vacation ended in tragedy after a curious little girl suffered a 229-foot fall into Brazil 's biggest canyon and died Thursday.
Bianca Bernardon Zanella, 11, took off running and fell from the edge of Fortaleza Canyon in Cambará do Sul, the Rio Grande do Sul Fire Department said.
Zanella's father told Cambará do Sul police chief Fernanda Aranha they were about to return to the base of the canyon before his wife escorted their two youngest children to a snack bar.
He stood behind with Zanella, who had autism. They were about to sit on a bench located in an area of the canyon that is considered the highest point.
Zanella at one point ran while her father was not looking and was chased before falling off the cliff around 1pm local time.
The youngster's body was located in the canyon around 5:30 pm with the use of a drone that was deployed by the fire department.
A search mission via helicopter was postponed due to fog and bad weather at the canyon.
A team of firefighters rappelled into the mountain in a mission and found Bianca dead at around 11pm.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was shocked by Zanella's death.
'The death of little Bianca Zanella, 11, moved me deeply,' Lula wrote on his X account Friday morning.
'She fell from a cliff in the Serra Geral National Park, in Rio Grande do Sul, and despite the brave efforts of security forces, it was not possible to rescue her alive.
'I express my deepest sympathy to his parents and family, and I pray that God brings them comfort in this time of grief.'
Serra Geral National Park was closed to visitors on Friday as part of a Rio Grande do Sul Civil Police investigation.
Fortaleza Canyon, which is 4.7 miles long and 6,561 feet wide, is 3,795 above sea level and 14 miles from the city center.
The site features several guarded trails, including the Mirante Trail, which offers a complete view of the canyon.

Parents killed & 2 kids gravely hurt in horror crash as son they just dropped off at college watched from different car

A SON helplessly watched his family get into a terrifying car crash that killed both of his parents and severely injured his siblings. The family was driving in two cars to get lunch while dropping off the son at college when the parents' car veered off the road, crashed into a wooded area and slammed into a tree. 3 3 Their son, Noah, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, was traveling in a second car when the crash happened. After the accident, Noah pulled over on the side of the road as emergency personnel tried to save his parents and siblings, WOIO said. The family had traveled to his university from Ohio to drop him off for the new semester, according to the outlet. Donald Nunney, 55, and his wife Maria Nunney, 50, died as a result of their injuries from the August 15 accident, according to a GoFundMe for the family. Two other children – aged 9 and 15 – were also greatly injured, the fundraiser said, but did survive. The fatal crash They were near the college on Friday afternoon when their van had veered off the highway and hit multiple small trees, Highway Patrol said. The car then went into an embankment and hit a large tree, WNCN reported. Maria, who sat in the passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Donald, who was driving at the time of the crash, died shortly after he was airlifted to a hospital, according to police. No other cars were involved in the accident. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol told WOIO that the college student was staying at his sibling's bedside as they recover in the hospital. Beloved teachers The couple were both teachers in Cleveland, Ohio, where the family is from. "Maria and Donald were more than amazing and loving parents," their fundraiser said. "They were also a devoted son and daughter, siblings, caring teachers, and friends." Classes at the district they worked at began classes on Monday, just days after the horrific crash. Sandro Galindo, the brother of Maria, told WNCN that they were driving to lunch with their son. "Maria and Donald leave behind a legacy of community, family, and love, all rooted in the devotion they had for their children and their family." "Every contribution, no matter the size, eases some of the weight these children are carrying," the GoFundMe said. The couple had four children in total. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash as the investigation continues, according to WNCN. The first day of school for UNC students was the following Monday, too. North Carolina's State Highway Patrol could not immediately be reached for comment by The U.S. Sun. The fundraiser had raised over $224,000 as of Wednesday morning, with over 2,800 donations. "These four incredible kids are facing an unimaginable loss. As their family, we want to do everything we can to make sure their needs are cared for and their futures protected," the fundraiser description read. "They gave so much of themselves to their students and their community." 3

Family pay heartbreaking tribute to teen killed in crash who ‘brought love to everything he did' as driver, 36, jailed

A GRIEVING family have paid a heartbreaking tribute to their "beautiful" son who tragically lost his life in a fatal car crash. William Ray, 17, died when when woman in an Audi smashed into his Ford Fiesta. 4 The teenager, who had been stopped at temporary traffic lights, was killed in the horror crash along with his mate Eddie Shore, 18. Mum-of-two Natasha Allarakhia was driving her two young daughters when she crashed into William's Ford in North Rauceby, Lincolnshire. Allarakhia, 36, from Norwich — was sentenced to ten years in prison earlier this week. The court was told she was sipping alcohol while at the wheel and had been driving at 90mph before the crash. She also lied to the police to try to escape justice for her actions, the court heard. William's heartbroken mum, Sarah Barker, has now paid a touching tribute to her boy, who "brought love to everything he did". She said: 'Will was not just my only son, he was also my best friend, and I love him dearly. "Throughout his life, he brought me joy, love and hope in everything he did. "But not only that, he was a fantastic stepson, grandson and brother." Sarah told how William had a bright future ahead of him - and was about to embark on an aerospace engineering course at university. She added: 'Will's life was only just starting and he was looking forward to beginning the next chapter of it. He was both academic and athletic – not only was he gifted at gymnastics where he trained at Lincoln Gymnastic Club, but also a keen rugby player at Sleaford Rugby Club. "He was due to attend the University of Sheffield to study aerospace engineering, having successfully passed his A-levels, something he never got to see. 'As a mother, I will never get to see Will graduate, get married or make his future life. " William's father Steven has also paid tribute to his son: 'Will had been out celebrating with his friends as they concluded their A-level examinations and were returning home when he was taken from us. "He had been looking forward to a future of university, travel, relationships, all of which I know would have been filled with success. 'Will was the best of us, as a son, brother, grandson, and friend. A sportsman, academic and boyfriend – I genuinely believe that I never heard a bad word said against him. " 'We now all have to learn what a new normal will be for us without Will. He will never be forgotten.' 4 Lincoln Crown Court heard Allarakhia was disqualified from driving in January this year over failing to provide information about two speeding offences in the weeks before and after the fatal crash. At the time of the tragedy, she was "literally drinking and driving" as she sped around with her two daughters, aged seven and 12, in the back while sipping from a can of lager. She reached speeds of 96mph before crashing into William's stationary car at 70mph. The mum then laughed while taking a roadside breathalyser test and spent more than an hour lying to police. Data taken from the two cars showed Allarakhia did not take her foot off the accelerator until just two seconds before the collision. It also revealed she was just 121ft away from the Fiesta when her brakes were briefly applied. Prosecutor David Eager said William in comparison had shown "exemplary' driving before the crash in June last year. Allarakhia admitted two charges of causing death by dangerous driving and one charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She was also banned from driving for a total of 12 years and 8 months and must take an extended re-test before being allowed to drive again. Allarakhia wept and cried out "I'm so sorry" as William and Eddie's families read heartbreaking victim impact statements.

Husband of mum killed by falling tree branch pays emotional tribute to ‘love of my life'

THE husband of a woman killed by a falling tree branch has paid tribute to the "love of my life". Wasim Kauser described his wife as the "most beautiful woman in the world" and his "one and only". 4 4 4 Madia Kauser, 32, tragically died after reportedly pushed her five-year-old daughter out of the way of the falling branch on August 11. The couple and their two children had been out on a walk in Witton Country Park, Blackburn, Lancashire, when the beech tree branch fell. Her husband, Wasim, 32, has since delivered a touching tribute. Mr Kauser said in a tribute issued by police: "My wife, a mother-of-two, a daughter, sister and a friend we lost to a tragic event that came on the way home from a family day out in the park. "She was the most beautiful woman in the world, she did everything for our two children, she did everything she could for anyone and would bring smiles whenever she entered the room. "She was my comfort, my partner in life and the love of my life. "We have so many great memories, went through pain together and started a family together. "Honestly, I feel completely lost without her and I do not know how to put into words how much I miss her face, her character and her presence. My one and only." Their daughter was reportedly in a push chair which Madia managed to shove out of the way, saving the child's life. Wasim was playing football with the pair's nine-year-old son nearby. He previously told The Sun about how he desperately tried to save his wife as she took her last few breaths. Wasim said: "I was playing football with my son and kicked the ball in the wrong direction and we were going after it. "I heard a crack and the tree just came down. There was no wind, nothing. "She was hit by a branch but it had the full weight of the tree behind it and that is why the council had to cut it all down. "I rushed to her. I tried to save her, she was still breathing." Paramedics and doctors from the local hospital rushed to the scene but nothing could be done to save her. Wasim added: "I cannot praise the paramedics enough. They were there in six minutes and the doctors came from the local hospital but nothing could be done. "I have spoken to someone at the coroners office and they tell me she had chest fractures and her lungs had collapsed. "The tree she was hit by was standing straight not even leaning and then it just came down. "She has left us. Now there is just me and my children." Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council has since removed the remainder of the tree, as well as trimming back nearby tree branches. A Lancashire Police spokesman said Madia's death was not being treated as suspicious and a file would be prepared for the coroner. Police are carrying out a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive, and have appealed for witnesses. 4
