Evans set for new Man Utd role
Jonny Evans is in line to remain at Manchester United in a staff role after his playing contract expired at the end of the season.While it was assumed Northern Ireland centre-back Evans would retire, the 37-year-old has been determined to assess all his options, mindful he did not want to leave his base in the north-west of England.It is understood Evans is in advanced talks with United over a role that would see him look after the loan deals put in place for younger players.In their retained list announced earlier this month, United had 33 younger players under contract, a significant proportion of whom will be loaned out during the 2025-26 season.England Under-19 forward Ethan Wheatley may fall into that category, with United keen to avoid the striker suffering a similar experience to his stint at Walsall in the second half of last season, when he ended up playing on just four occasions.Evans was the last remaining player at United to have been picked for a league game by Sir Alex Ferguson. Goalkeeper Tom Heaton was named on the bench on a number of occasions at the start of his career but never made an actual first-team appearance.

Manchester United remain keen on adding a new striker to their squad before the transfer window closes and have been told that their ideal option could be right in front of their face Manchester United have been told to make a surprise swoop for Everton striker Beto as a solution to their goalscoring woes. The Red Devils struggled for goals last season and have as a result launched a search for a new striker. Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres was one of their initial targets but United are facing competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal. And as it stands, Gyokeres appears to prefer a move to the Emirates Stadium in any case. Ruben Amorim 's side have now been told to look elsewhere, specifically on Merseyside. Fernando Lopes, president of Portuguese club Uniao Tires, has suggested that Beto - who used to play for his side - would be an ideal addition. As quoted by The Sun, Lopes said: "Everyone thought Amorim would sign Gyokeres as he had him at Sporting, but the Premier League is completely different to Portugal. "Teams are more physical and compact at the back, it's quicker and more competitive. Gyokeres would struggle to play as the lone No. 9 waiting for service. Beto's a more physical player, who fights with defenders and doesn't lose duels. He's a real headache for opponents - if he gets the service. "In their golden era, United always scored a lot of goals from set-pieces, but haven't had a proper striker for many seasons. Nowadays, teams have small, quick strikers or a false forward because there's an obsession for possession of the ball. "Beto represents the typical old style, because of his physique, power and work-rate, plus he's very fast. When [David] Moyes went to Everton he showed what a handful he's for defenders to stop. He'd be like Amorim's ace up his sleeve in a game of poker." Beto, 27, joined Everton from Italian side Udinese in 2023 for £25m but endured a poor start to life in the Premier League with just three goals across his debut season. Former Tottenham star Jamie O'Hara recently suggested that Jamie Vardy would be an ideal addition following his exit from Leicester. How many goals has [Rasmus] Hojlund got? 'You can't tell me he still can't do a job in the Premier League. As a free transfer, I think he's a great signing to add to your squad.' United have already added Wolves star Matheus Cunha to their squad after paying £62.5m for the ex-Wolves forward. Women's Euro 2025 team guides: Norway
This article is part of the Guardian's Euro 2025 Experts' Network, a cooperation between some of the best media organisations from the 16 countries who qualified. is running previews from two teams each day in the run-up to the tournament kicking off on 2 July. Norway arrive in Switzerland hoping to show their true potential and improving on the past two major tournaments, which were huge disappointments and remembered for two things. At Euro 2022 Norway lost 8-0 to England and exited at the group stage while at the World Cup a year later the Barcelona star Caroline Graham Hansen was benched for the second game and came out swinging towards the coaching staff after the final whistle. They made it out of the group but lost meekly to Japan 3-1 in the last 16. It is a new start in many ways for this team: there is a new head coach, the Englishwoman Gemma Grainger, and she has implemented a new formation. More important, perhaps, she began in February 2024 to build a new, more harmonious culture. A year later she gave the captain's armband to Ada Stolsmo Hegerberg, who is extremely motivated to lead Norway to success this summer. 'It's been a long journey with the national team for me,' Hegerberg said when she was appointed the team's new leader, replacing Maren Mjelde. 'Standing here and getting that trust from Gemma is a great feeling.' However, while spirits are high and the group seem to be working better together, they have struggled to find any rhythm on the pitch, especially going forward. In their six Nations League matches this campaign they scored only four goals and won only two of the games. Grainger is unconcerned, though. 'It doesn't worry me. It's about winning matches and that's what we've done,' she said after the 1-0 win against Switzerland that ended their campaign. It has been an awkward spring for Grainger with injuries hampering her selections. Most of them seem to have cleared in time for the tournament, though, with only the first-choice centre-backs, Mathilde Harviken and Guro Bergsvand, fitness doubts. Gemma Grainger got off to a flying start with two wins and a combined scoreline of 8-0 against Croatia in the Nations League playoffs last year. The 42-year-old from Middlesbrough is a self-proclaimed football fanatic and most of her waking hours are spent watching or thinking about football. She's already been a football coach for more than two decades; since the age of 19 Grainger has devoted herself to the occupation, with Silva Neid, the former Germany international and national-team head coach, as her idol. 'She is the most successful female coach in history and has truly influenced how I am as a coach today,' she has said. If Caroline Graham Hansen, technically brilliant and an artist on the pitch, can find her best form at the Euros, the vice-captain can take Norway a long, long way. At Barcelona she is usually seen on the right wing combining with Aitana Bonmatí, but for Norway she has more of a free role, finding space behind Ada Hegerberg. Last year the 30-year-old finally got the recognition she deserves, finishing second in the Ballon d'Or, being included in the Fifa Best team and winning Norway's Kniksen award. The way she has been playing this year, it wouldn't be a surprise if Signe Gaupset took the Euros by storm. At the age of 20, she has utterly dominated the Norwegian Toppserien. The talented Molde native has a mature style of play and is adept at both defending and attacking, proving her worth every time she has been given the chance by Gemma Grainger. Despite interest from a lot of clubs abroad this winter, Gaupset extended her contract with Brann until the summer of 2027. It will be interesting to see how long they can hold on to her. More than 73,000 women and girls are registered as football players in Norway and it is the most popular sport for women in the country. Media coverage is on the rise and the rights holder TV 2 has full coverage of all 27 rounds of Toppserien this season. The league is still semi-professional with teams such as Vålerenga, Brann, Rosenborg and LSK Kvinner dominating both on and off the pitch. Encouragingly clubs in Norway's second tier are increasing their financial support for their women's team and are on the rise. They will aim to win their group – and should do so. Jimmy Bullard admits he 'couldn't find anything' as Premier League cult hero falls short in his bid to qualify for The Open
Former Premier League cult hero Jimmy Bullard has admitted he 'couldn't find anything' on the course as his bid to qualify for the Open Championship came to an end. Bullard was among 2,000 players competing around 15 venues across the UK and Ireland on Monday in regional qualifying events. The events offered between seven and 10 qualification spots for final qualifying event on July 1. Bullard competed at the regional qualifying event at Rochester and Cobham Park, with the former Fulham, Wigan, and Hull City player carding a three over par round of 74. The 46-year-old, who is a scratch golfer, finished four strokes away from a qualifying position at the event. 'Deffo not my day today but loved every minute of it,' Bullard wrote on Instagram. 'Tried to dig deep but couldn't find anything. 'A big thanks to @rcpgc @therandagolf @theopen and all of yous that come out to support, at one point I counted close to 100 of yas.' Bullard previously competed in five of the now defunct EuroPro tour events between 2014 and 2016 and was hoping to qualify for the open. Announcing his attempt to qualify in a video on his channel, Bullard said: 'Done my back [last year], played too much golf so I've got to manage that. 'But I think that's just a one off to be honest. I don't really get injured do I? Quest for The Open, yes. But a quest to make me a better golfer. 'I feel like the game of golf, I've got to the ceiling of what I know. All my scores are like level par, one-under, I've reached my ceiling. 'How do I get to the next level shooting four, five, six under? Is it available to me with my ability? I don't know. But I feel I've come to the end where I need a coach. I've exhausted all the stuff I know.' Bullard had been left on the verge of tears after he was forced to pull out of qualifiers last year because of a back injury. The former midfielder was not the only ex-Premier League player bidding to qualify for the major. Peter Odemwingie, the former West Brom, Cardiff and Stoke forward, also missed out at his regional qualifier at Enville. Odemwingie, who qualified as a PGA professional golfer since retiring from football, carded a 10-over par round of 82. Golf's oldest tournament, The Open, will take place at Royal Portrush from July 17 to 20.
