Adams said that California-based lab Astrea Forensics failed to follow some of the nationally accepted verification and validation standards. He also said the developers of the software used in Heuermann's case, IBDGem, have identified data errors and other defects in the system.
The software has been updated since testing finished in Heuermann's case, Adams said.
Adams said system errors would require a "risk and hazard analysis" to avoid "a miscarriage of justice," the New York Post reported.
The prosecution has maintained that the DNA testing used in the case is widely accepted in the scientific community.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney challenged Adams' qualifications, claiming that his testimony has not been admissible in about 30 court cases.
Heuermann's ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, and daughter, Victoria Heuermann, did not attend the hearing on Tuesday. They have previously attended several of Heuermann's court appearances.
Ellerup and Victoria were recently interviewed in the new Peacock documentary series The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets.

Police searching for suspects in $500,000 delivery truck carjacking in Orange County
Police are searching for several suspects wanted for carjacking a delivery truck containing over $500,000 worth of merchandise in Orange County. On July 3, Irvine police responded to a carjacking and robbery on Sky Park Circle in Irvine. The victim was making deliveries in the commercial area when he was approached by armed suspects. They stole the victim's delivery truck, which contained over $500,000 worth of merchandise at the time. Police later found the box truck in Lynwood. The vehicle's dash cam captured footage of several others who were involved. Two people were later identified in the carjacking — Hector Sebastian Guerra, 27, and Jose Juan Miranda, 22, both of Los Angeles. Both were arrested for carjacking, robbery and conspiracy. Woman arrested after police find over $100,000 worth of stolen goods in Orange County
A woman was arrested after police found over $100,000 worth of stolen merchandise in her Orange County home. The suspect was identified as Ekaterina Zharkova, 40, of Lake Forest, according to the Irvine Police Department. The suspect was being investigated for retail theft by Irvine police, along with the Orange County Sheriff's Department's Retail Theft Unit and private security partners. On Aug. 13, Zharkova was arrested outside her home. While searching her residence, officers reportedly found over $100,000 worth of stolen retail goods. Many of the items were taken from Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Photos from the bust showed a large amount of clothing, handbags, shoes, home goods, beauty products and more. Zharkova was arrested for grand theft with a bail enhancement. The stolen merchandise was returned to its respective stores.
