Saudi Arabia returns to two-term academic year starting 2025-2026
NEOM — The Saudi Cabinet has approved a return to a two-semester academic year for public schools starting in the 1447/1448 Hijri school year (2025–2026), while maintaining the previously approved long-term academic calendar framework through the next four years, the Ministry of Education announced.
The ministry said the decision follows a comprehensive review of the three-semester model, which had been adopted as part of broader education reforms in line with Vision 2030.
While the three-term system helped solidify a minimum of 180 instructional days annually — comparable to averages in OECD and G20 countries — the shift back to two terms reflects a strategic pivot informed by national consultations.
The ministry emphasized that educational quality is not solely determined by the number of semesters but by the foundational elements of the learning ecosystem, including teacher training and motivation, curriculum development, school environment, institutional governance, and local autonomy.
A wide-ranging study involving educators, administrators, students, and parents found that flexibility in academic scheduling — particularly in regions with special seasonal demands like Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah, and Taif — is essential for better alignment with local needs and to support national priorities such as the Hajj and Umrah seasons.While public schools will return to a two-term system, the Ministry confirmed that private and international schools, universities, and vocational institutions will retain the flexibility to choose the academic model that best suits their needs.

Ministry of Education appoints Mona Al-Ajmi as spokesperson ahead of new school year
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The Ministry of Education announced Sunday the appointment of Mona Al-Ajmi as its new spokesperson, just days before the start of the academic year. Al-Ajmi becomes the second woman to serve as the ministry's spokesperson, following Ibtisam Al-Shehri, who held the position from 2019 to 2023 and was the first Saudi woman to serve as an official spokesperson for a government ministry. The ministry said the appointment is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public engagement and improve media outreach. Al-Ajmi completed her secondary education in Kuwait and earned a bachelor's degree in education, majoring in English, from King Faisal University. She previously served as supervisor of the Department of Private and Foreign Education in Al-Ahsa. She is also a certified trainer from the De Bono Thinking Systems Center, a certified trainer from the Stephen Covey Institute for the Seven Habits program, and a certified trainer in thinking strategies, education, and human development, as well as a certified trainer of trainers (ToT) from Cairo University.

Saudi Arabia offers Lebanon condolences over death of army soldiers
Saudi Arabia on Saturday offered Lebanon its condolences over the death of Lebanese army soldiers who were killed in a blast at a weapons depot near the Israeli border. The Kingdom 'expressed its condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and its solidarity with the Lebanese government and people,' The Saudi foreign ministry said in a statement on X. 'The Kingdom commends the army's efforts to uphold the government's sovereignty over all its territory, ensure its security and stability, and contribute to the prosperity of Lebanon and its people.' Six soldiers were killed and other wounded on Saturday 'while an army unit was inspecting a weapons depot and dismantling its contents in Wadi Zibqin,' in the Tyre district near the Israeli border. A military source told AFP that the blast took place 'inside a Hezbollah military facility.' Troops were 'removing munitions and unexploded ordnance left over from the recent war' between Israel and Hezbollah when the blast occurred, the source added. Under a truce that ended a recent war between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah, the army has been deploying in south Lebanon and dismantling the militant group's infrastructure there.
