Anwar, Philippines' Marcos Jr reaffirm Asean's role in tackling regional and global challenges
He said this matter was discussed during a phone conversation with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. after his return from Jakarta, Indonesia, last night.
'We talked about recent developments in the region, including his visit to the United States, and Asean's crucial role in strengthening regional cooperation,' he said in a social media post.
Anwar also noted the positive progress in the ongoing peace efforts between Cambodia and Thailand, despite some challenges.
'Malaysia appreciates the constructive contributions from major powers like China and the United States, as well as Asean partners, in supporting these peace talks,' he added.
On Monday, Anwar announced that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to ease tensions along their disputed border. This was the outcome of a special meeting he chaired in Putrajaya.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the meeting, along with United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.
The US co-hosted the meeting, with China participating as an observer to support a peaceful resolution to the situation.
The two neighbouring Southeast Asian countries have a long-standing dispute over their 817-kilometre border, which remains partially unmarked.
Tensions flared on May 28 when clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers near the Preah Vihear border resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
The most recent conflict erupted on July 24, with additional clashes reported in northern Cambodia, causing casualties on both sides. — Bernama

Australia's new measures to strengthen education ties with Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Australia's newly announced measures to boost Southeast Asian student enrolments from 2026 will create more opportunities for Malaysians to study at its universities and further strengthen the countries' longstanding higher education ties. Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Danielle Heinecke, said the new measures from next year aim to attract more international students from Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. She said Malaysia and Australia share a longstanding partnership in higher education, with strong institutional links, student mobility, and alumni networks built over decades. "Australia remains one of the most popular destinations for Malaysian students with more than 13,000 Malaysians currently studying in Australia. "The Australian government is prioritising Southeast Asia, this is great news for Malaysian students wanting a high-quality Australian education and student experience. "New efforts to boost the number of students will strengthen our people-to-people links and encourage more investment in Malaysia," she said in a statement. To date, around 500,000 Malaysians have pursued their studies with Australia's world-class education providers. Besides that, four Australian universities – Monash University Malaysia, Curtin University, Swinburne University of Technology and University of Wollongong – operate campuses in Malaysia, reflecting the strength of our education ties. On Aug 4, the Australian Government announced it would increase the number of international student places next year and introduce new measures to boost enrolments from Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries. Under the new framework, a National Planning Level of 295,000 international student places will be introduced for 2026, representing a 9 per cent increase from 270,000 places in 2025. The Australian High Commission stated that Australia's public universities will be able to apply to increase their international student allocations for 2026, by demonstrating an increased engagement with Southeast Asia, through their education offerings, partnerships, campuses, alumni and scholarships. "As part of the reforms, universities will also be required to provide additional student accommodation to ensure both domestic and international students have access to safe and secure student housing. "These changes reflect the Australian government's commitment to building stronger ties with Southeast Asia, consistent with the strategy Invested: Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040," it said.

China, Zimbabwe ink cooperation deal, food assistance package
HARARE, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China and Zimbabwe on Wednesday signed an agreement on economic and technical cooperation and exchange of letters for a new batch of food assistance to boost Zimbabwe's socio-economic development and food security. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa presided over the signing ceremony at the State House, where Zimbabwean Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube thanked China for its continued support to various economic sectors in Zimbabwe. He said that the previous economic and technical cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in 2020 has supported, among other projects, the drilling of boreholes across the country and the implementation of the Juncao technology assistance project that helps Zimbabwean farmers to cultivate hybrid grass rich in protein. "The government of Zimbabwe sincerely appreciates and acknowledges the emergency food assistance continuously received from China," Ncube said. "Indeed, China has demonstrated that they are our all-weather friend through the invaluable support they have consistently rendered to the people of Zimbabwe." For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhou Ding said the agreements were a testimony of the resilient ties between the two countries and the affirmation of China's unwavering solidarity with Zimbabwe. He said the economic and technical cooperation agreement, as well as the food assistance, were part of the 17 cooperation agreements signed between China and Zimbabwe during Mnangagwa's state visit to China last year.
