RM1.3 million smuggled goods seized so far in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry branch here recorded 15 cases of misappropriation involving controlled goods. The seizures, valued at RM1,302,073.20, were recorded between January 1 and April 25 and are currently under investigation and prosecution. Its Chief Enforcement Officer Azdy Zukkry John said the items involved include liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), subsidised cooking oil, wheat flour, sugar, RON95 petrol and diesel, believed to have been smuggled to neighbouring countries. 'We are intensifying our monitoring efforts to curb leakages of controlled goods in Sandakan waters through several upcoming integrated operations aimed at stamping out such offences in the district. 'KPDN Sandakan continues to work closely with other enforcement agencies, including the police, the Sandakan Marine Police Force and the General Operations Force,' he said, Saturday. Commenting on a recent integrated operation, Azdy said nine KPDN Sandakan enforcement personnel joined forces with the district marine police for a joint effort. 'The operation, which ran from 9pm to 2.30am, focused on inspections across Sandakan waters using marine police assets. 'We carried out checks in key areas, including the waters of Sungai Seguntor, the Tanah Merah coastline near Kampung Bokara and several private jetties around Sandakan. 'Inspections of boats and vessels revealed no activities in breach of the Control of Supplies Act 1961,' he added. Under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 (Act 122), individuals found guilty may be fined up to RM1 million, imprisoned for up to three years, or both. 'For second or subsequent offences, the penalty increases to a fine not exceeding RM3 million, imprisonment for up to five years, or both. 'In the case of companies, those found guilty may face a fine of up to RM2 million, while repeat offences could result in fines of up to RM5 million,' he said. Azdy added that the Ministry will continue enhancing the efficiency of its enforcement operations and strengthening strategic cooperation with other agencies. 'KPDN Sandakan also welcomes any information or complaints related to trader misconduct. 'Consumers can act as the eyes and ears of the Ministry by channelling complete complaint details through our official reporting platforms,' he said. Complaints can be submitted via WhatsApp at 019-848 8000, through the complaint portal at eAduan KPDN, by calling the hotline at 1-800-886-800, or by email at [email protected]. [UPDATED] KL Tower tussle: Court dismisses contempt bid by ex-operator
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court today dismissed a legal bid by Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB) and former KL Tower operator Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd to start contempt proceedings against Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and several others. Judge Roz Mawar Rozain made the ruling after finding that the applicants had failed to establish a prima facie case of contempt against the respondents. The two companies filed contempt proceedings against eight individuals for allegedly disrupting the administration of justice amid ongoing legal proceedings. The eight are – Federal Land Commissioner Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain; Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman; Lim Seong Hai Capital Berhad (LSH) chairman Tan Sri Lim Keng Cheng; LSH chief executive Khairil Faizal Othman; Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; administrative services division secretary Harun Ali; and senior division secretary (management) Mazlan Abd Mutalib. The court also found no merit in the plaintiff's claim that the authorities had wrongfully entered its property after the contract with the government ended on March 31, regardless of how forceful the actions were. "This court is not satisfied that a prima facie case has been established to warrant leave for contempt proceedings to be granted," she said. Roz Mawar awarded RM15,000 in cost to Fahmi and RM10,000 in cost to the other respondents. Meanwhile, the court also dismissed the plaintiffs' application for an interim injunction to stop Fahmi and the government from granting the KL Tower concession to LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, ruling that the matter had become academic. On March 27, the plaintiffs filed a RM1 billion suit against Fahmi and the new KL Tower concessionaire following the termination of the management agreement. In a statement, MKLSB managing director Datuk Abdul Hamid Shaikh said the injunction aims to maintain the current status quo until the dispute is fully resolved in court. He said that in 2022, Hydroshoppe was invited by the Communications Ministry to become a strategic partner in revitalising MKLSB's operations and ensuring the tower's continued management and maintenance. Abdul Hamid claimed that despite multiple attempts to resolve the matter amicably, the ministry and the new concessionaire have refused to acknowledge the 2022 agreement, leaving MKLSB and Hydroshoppe facing financial and operational uncertainty. He claimed that outstanding payments amounting to RM25 million for maintenance and operational services remain unpaid, and have added further financial strain, MKLSB has managed and maintained KL Tower for nearly 30 years.

Woman loses over RM600,000 to fake share investment scheme
KUANTAN: A research officer lost more than RM600,000 after falling victim to a bogus share investment scheme. Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 57-year-old woman was first lured into the scheme after being added to a WhatsApp group on March 21. She made an initial investment of RM14,000 and managed to withdraw a RM1,000 return, which gave her the confidence to continue investing. "Between April 23 and June 4, she made 28 transactions amounting to over RM600,000 to three different bank accounts using her savings," he said in a statement on Monday (June 9). The victim grew suspicious when she attempted to withdraw RM50,000, only to be told she needed to pay RM200,000 in service charges. Realising she had been scammed, she lodged a police report at the Rompin police headquarters on Sunday (June 8). The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - Bernama

Perak MB overcome with emotion, offers condolences, financial aid
IPOH: Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad was visibly moved to tears after visiting the families of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students at the Forensic Department of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here, today. When met by reporters outside the forensic unit, he said he deeply sympathised with the families of the students who perished in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik, early this morning. He said he managed to meet several next-of-kin who were present to identify the remains of their loved ones. "For those still undergoing treatment, whether in critical or stable condition, we pray for their swift recovery so they may return to continue their studies at UPSI. "To the bereaved families, I understand the pain they are enduring. This is a tremendous loss that will leave a lasting impact. "UPSI has prepared counselling services, and we hope the families can find comfort and come to terms with this tragedy as part of Allah's will," he said. Saarani added that the state government had handed over RM1,000 in financial aid to each family. "We realise that not all families are financially secure, so this small contribution may help with accommodation and other urgent needs. "Some arrived as early as 4am to identify the bodies. Once the forensic process is completed, the remains will be released to the families for burial in their respective hometowns," he said. He also gave assurances that support was being extended to the survivors who were still receiving treatment. "We continue to pray for their recovery so they can resume their studies at UPSI," he added.
