McRae feels for mate Voss as Blues face blowtorch
Voss is again in the firing line after the Blues suffered another humiliating defeat, this time a 56-point thrashing from McRae's Magpies at the MCG on Friday night.
The 17.13 (115) to 8.11 (59) result sent Collingwood further clear on top of the ladder as their premiership assault gathers steam.
And it left Carlton (6-10) stuck under the blowtorch ahead of another difficult assignment against reigning premiers Brisbane.
"For all our excitement there's a level of, 'I hope my mate's OK'," McRae said of former Lions premiership teammate Voss.

"As much as we want to beat our arch-rival, that's done now and I just go into love and care and support for a guy that I've got enormous love and support for.
"So I hope he's going OK. It's a tough industry, we know.
"We sit in this chair - it's a hot seat - and when things don't work out we know what the job sometimes puts across your desk."
McRae and Voss don't talk during the build-up to matches between their two sides, but the former Lions goal-sneak will reach out to his ex-captain in the coming days.
"I'm not sure whether I can do anything, other than just be there for him so he can maybe have someone to chat to through this period," McRae said.
Carlton president Rob Priestley this week declared Voss safe at least until the end of the season, without guaranteeing the coach will see out the final year of his contract.
But another meek performance from the Blues will spark further debate about the 49-year-old's tenure ahead of incoming CEO Graham Wright's official start next month.
"The only thing that I'm really worried about right now is ensuring that we continue to support our people, and that's what we're going to continue to do," Voss said.
"This goes well beyond our support teams and our players - this goes to families, as well, and how we're supporting them.
"So all those sorts of things about pressure and messaging, they are the least of my concerns right now."
After three straight losses, Carlton are all but out of finals contention with seven rounds left to play.
Voss said the top eight is "the furthest thing from my mind" but insisted there is still plenty to be gained from the rest of the season.
"The fight's on and the season's live, so this is the most important part.
"Seeing out the season strongly is exactly what we are going to do.
"There will obviously be some opportunities, as we presented tonight, with some younger players, but there's also trying to get the cohesion with the group to be able to play some time together.
"So we might have some breakdowns - we might - but we're pretty determined to give that exposure where needed.
"But there's also a level of expectation around our performance that we need as well."

Bulldogs hooker Mahoney to join Cowboys in 2026
Reed Mahoney is the latest member of the successful Canterbury spine to find a new club for next year. Hot on the heels of halfback Toby Sexton securing a two-year stay at France-based Super League club Catalans, Bulldogs hooker Mahoney will join North Queensland next season on a three-year deal. The 27-year-old had been given permission by the Bulldogs to speak with other clubs despite being on contract until the end of next season. On Saturday, the Bulldogs were yet to announce the release of Mahoney to the Cowboys but AAP has been told the deal is done. The Cowboys had been in the market for an elite No.9 with NSW hooker Reece Robson to join the Sydney Roosters from next have now got their man. Mahoney has been a key figure in the renaissance of the Bulldogs under coach Cameron Ciraldo. He has played every match since joining the club from Parramatta in 2024, which now stands at 64 games on the trot. The Bulldogs do have contingencies to cope with the exits of their half and hooker. Bailey Hayward is expected to start at No.9 in 2026 while recent signing Lachlan Galvin is slated to slot into the halves on a regular basis long-term. Galvin's arrival at the Bulldogs has created a dilemma for Ciraldo, who switched regular No.6 Matt Burton to centre in Friday night's disappointing 22-18 loss to the Broncos - the second defeat in a row for the Bulldogs who entered round 18 in second spot. The positional switch had mixed success. While Burton was strong in the first half against the Broncos, the Bulldogs lost their way after leading 18-0 with Galvin overplaying his hand and errors eventuating. Sexton had a strong all-round match and with NSW centre and Canterbury captain Stephen Crichton set to return from his State of Origin duties, Ciraldo must find the right mix to cater for three halves - Burton, Galvin and Sexton - in the run to the finals.

Wallabies warned Test against Fiji is a danger game
Fiji have warned the Wallabies of the danger of treating their Test match as a warm-up for the upcoming British and Irish Lions series as the Pacific islanders look to make history in Newcastle. After wrecking Australia's World Cup campaign two years ago in France with their first win over the Wallabies in 69 years, Fiji have set their sights on going back-to-back for the first time. The teams will compete for the Vuvale Bowl, with Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese and his Fijian counterpart Sitiveni Rabuka, a former Test front-rower, to present the trophy. Skipper Tevita Ikanivere says his side is up for the challenge and will take advantage if the Wallabies have an eye on the Lions, whom they face in the first Test in Brisbane on July 19. "No Fiji team has gone two in a row to beat the Wallabies yet and we're looking to be the first," said Ikanivere, who is the Drua hooker in the Super Rugby Pacific competition. "If they don't have their eyes both on us tomorrow, then I think they're in danger. "I know everybody there is hungry to try and beat us, to get us back, and we are too so it's going to be a great battle." Wallabies skipper Harry Wilson wasn't part of that World Cup debacle but said they had watched plenty of vision of the last meeting between the countries to know the threat Fiji posed. He said his team wouldn't be holding anything back for the Lions. "We're going out there to win," the No.8 said. "The last time we versed Fiji two years ago we had a tough loss there and it's such a massive battle. "Obviously we've been keeping our eyes on the Lions, watching the Super clubs verse them, but for us a Test match against Fiji, it doesn't get much bigger than that so we'll be throwing everything at them to make sure we go out there and get the result." The Queensland forward, who will lead the team out for the eighth time, said a win was more important than a perfect performance as they looked to build some momentum. A loss would severely rock their confidence ahead of the massive challenge of taking on the Lions in three Tests. "It's massively important so we're going out there we want to win," the 25-year-old said. "It's going to be such a tough Test match and we come out of a win it would be a really good start to our season. "Winning becomes a habit and I felt last year we had a lot of growth as a team and we put ourselves in a pretty good position by the end of the year and for us, we really want to expand from there and just keep putting out performances we're proud of." The Wallabies will be without two key forwards with Will Skelton and Rob Valetini both battling calf injuries. Flanker Valetini will rejoin the camp in Brisbane next Friday when the Wallabies squad for the Lions is unveiled while France-based lock Skelton has remained with the team. Skelton was Wallabies captain at the World Cup but missed the Fiji match, coincidentally with a calf injury. Wilson said he had been a great mentor for the players during their two-week build-up. "Will's been awesome and he's such an integral part of our group, and he's obviously a bit older now and he really mentors a lot of the young players in the team and is just a calming influence. "Obviously it's heartbreaking for him to miss this match, but no doubt he'll be ready to go in a few weeks."

Rival's sad admission as 'poor' scenes twist dagger into Blues coach Michael Voss
Collingwood coach Craig McRae says he will reach out to embattled Carlton rival and good friend Michael Voss after a big win on Friday night that could spell the end for his Blues counterpart. Calls have been growing louder for Voss to be sacked as coach and he was thrown further into the firing line after the Blues suffered another humiliating defeat to the Pies at the MCG. McRae's Magpies cantered to a 56-point victory, which sees the Blues (6-10) lose further ground on the AFL top-eight and turns the heat up even more on their besieged coach. Voss admitted after the 17.13 (115) to 8.11 (59) defeat that is was a "really poor performance" and that his side had "let the club down" after another underwhelming showing. "We let our club down tonight," Voss said after the mauling by the Magpies on Friday night. "We want our supporters to be proud of us, and we didn't do that tonight. There's an expectation on the way we want to be able to play, and we didn't do that tonight. "So, that's something that we're going to have to sit with. Not going to avoid that conversation, we'll have to cop our whack. We have to cop it because we can't tolerate that. That was a really poor performance." And with the knives sharpening and the discontent growing from Carlton's supporter base, McRae admits his side's big win was tinged with an element of sadness for his former teammate. McRae and Voss were premiership teammates at the Brisbane Lions during their playing days and the Collingwood coach says he feels for his Blues counterpart after their latest defeat. "For all our excitement there's a level of, 'I hope my mate's OK'," McRae said about Voss after the game. "As much as we want to beat our arch-rival, that's done now and I just go into love and care and support for a guy that I've got enormous love and support for. So I hope he's going OK. It's a tough industry, we know. We sit in this chair - it's a hot seat - and when things don't work out we know what the job sometimes puts across your desk." McRae and Voss may not have spoken much in the build-up to Friday night's game but the Magpies coach made it clear he would reach out to his rival coach in the wake of clash. "I'm not sure whether I can do anything, other than just be there for him so he can maybe have someone to chat to through this period," McRae added. After three straight losses, Carlton are all but out of finals contention with seven rounds left to play. And Voss admitted the finals were the furthest thing from his mind after Friday's loss, despite insisting that his men would continue to fight for the rest of the season - even if they showed little against the Pies.
