Family and football unite to bid Diogo Jota farewell
Close family and friends and stars of the world of football will gather Saturday for the funeral of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother 48 hours after the siblings' car crash.
Jota, 28, and Andre Silva, 25, were killed on Thursday after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northwestern Spain and became engulfed in flames, a week after the Portugal forward had got married.

The funeral, which begins at 0900 GMT, is being held in his hometown of Gondomar, near Porto.
The service will be conducted by the bishop of Porto, local media report.
On Friday hundreds attended a wake for the brothers.
Among those who came to offer their condolences were a childhood friend, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, Jota's agent Jorge Mendes and Porto club president Andre Villas-Boas.
"Football is truly in mourning. Diogo was an icon of the talent Portuguese football represents," said football federation chief Pedro Proenca.
Close family and friends including the parents paid their respects at Friday's wake first, with the grandfather propped up by two others to help him enter the chapel.

Mourners arrived carrying wreaths of flowers, some sobbing audibly, before the wake was opened to members of the public.
The death of the Portugal international and his brother has triggered an outpouring of emotion in football, and beyond.
Liverpool opened a book of condolences and lowered flags to half-mast, with dozens of supporters laying a sea of flowers, balloons, Jota shirts, and scarves with the message "Rest in peace Diogo Jota", outside Anfield.
At the Diogo Jota football academy, close to Gondomar SC where the ex-Porto and Atletico Madrid player took his first steps in the game, well-wishers created a memorial with flowers, scarves, candles and shirts.

"Thank you, Diogo Jota," read a child's handwritten message.
Pedro Neves, who was friends with Jota at school in Gondomar, said he "will remember him as someone who was very friendly, very courteous, who loved everyone, who always had a smile on his face".
"He left us too young, it's not fair. But that's how life is sometimes," Neves, 31, told AFP.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who brought Jota to the Reds in 2020, has said he was "heartbroken" while the club spoke of an "unimaginable loss".
Klopp's successor at Anfield, Arne Slot, said everyone associated with the club owed it to Jota to "stand together and be there for one another".

Jota was remembered at the Club World Cup in the United States on Friday, with a one-minute silence held at the quarter-final between Brazil's Fluminense and Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal in Orlando.
Portuguese and UK media reported Jota was driving to the northern Spanish port of Santander to take a ferry to England where Liverpool were due to start training on Friday, avoiding a flight on medical advice after a recent lung operation.
Liverpool's Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah said the death of his teammate had left him "frightened" to return to the club as the Premier League champions postponed the return of some players for pre-season training.
Jota had married his partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, posting a video of their wedding on Instagram just hours before the accident. They had three children.

Premier League and EFL at odds over redistribution deal
The Premier League have seen their latest attempt to tweak how football's wealth is distributed hit a roadblock. According to The Athletic, the English Football League (EFL) rejected a redistribution proposal just weeks before a landmark bill introducing an independent football regulator was passed. The offer was made in April and backed by Premier League chief executive Richard Masters. However, it fell short of the EFL's long-standing demand for 25% of the top flight's television rights revenue. That has been a huge sticking point in negotiations about bridging the financial gap between the Premier League and lower divisions. Speaking in the House of Lords on July 15, West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady revealed that the EFL board had turned down what she described as a 'credible and generous' proposal. Brady is one of many voices that have campaigned against the incoming regulator and warned that it could entrench a 'closed shop' among the league's elite clubs. However, she cautioned that the Premier League's 'future success' is not guaranteed, pointing to the growing threat from FIFA and UEFA expanding their competitions and commercial reach. Despite the setback, the Premier League remains hopeful that they can reach a deal without outside intervention. The independent regulator will be formally established by November, although it is expected to take time to become fully operational. For now, the Premier League and EFL will carry on with their existing arrangements without a deadline to focus on as far as any of the authorities potentially involved in any discussions are concerned. The debate stems from the Premier League being cautious about surrendering too much of its broadcasting income. They fear it could weaken the league's competitive edge and reduce their ability to invest in both top-tier football and the game as a whole. On the other hand, the EFL argues that a larger share of the game's richest revenue stream is essential for the sustainability of its 72 clubs, many of which face ongoing financial challenges.

Colliers hold out against Town after second-half sending off
Northallerton Town 1 Easington Colliery 2 Northallerton could have few complaints about a disappointing home defeat that ended their unbeaten start to the season. Town only got going after being reduced to 10 men in the second half, and although they pulled a goal back it was always going to be a tough battle to salvage a share of the points against resilient opponents. Manager Jason Newall was able to name a full-strength side, with skipper Liam Darville returning in midfield after a midweek injury, player-coach Jamie Harwood back in defence and Alistair Banks making his first start of the season up front alongside leading scorer James Sayer. Starting with a strong wind at their backs, Town showed flashes of attacking intent in the opening stages. Sayer headed narrowly wide from a James Coatsworth free-kick and Jack Stapley shot over the bar after a good build-up. But it was Easington who seized the initiative with the opening goal in the 21st minute. Dylan Elliott fired in a free-kick from the edge of the box that 'keeper Preston Leech got his gloves to, but he couldn't prevent the ball dribbling over the line. It needed a great tackle by Darville on Liam Anderson to prevent the visitors extending their first-half lead, and the dangerous winger shot narrowly wide before the break as Easington went in as the stronger side. Town's prospects were dealt a blow shortly into the second half when substitute Joe Wheatley, who had been on the field for only three minutes, was sent off for stamping on Easington replacement Dane Eltringham. And things got worse in the 55th minute when the Colliers doubled their lead through centre-forward Thomas Bott. Manager Newall promptly emptied the rest of his bench and it was fellow substitute Usman Ogidan who struck the sole positive note of the afternoon with his first goal for Northallerton after 77 minutes. A cross by Jonny Haase was helped on its way by Sayer and Ogidan got the final touch from close range. Town rallied strongly in the closing stages but Easington were able to hold out for a deserved victory. Northallerton host Kendal Town in the preliminary round of the FA Cup at the Calvert Stadium on Saturday, August 16 (3pm).
