Wicklow People
WICKLOW Rovers have been confirmed as Wicklow and District Football League champions after St Anthonys conceded the teams' league tie, which had been due to take place on Tuesday night.
Ironically, Rovers will face St Anthonys on Friday night anyway in the Jim McLaughlin Cup. That game kicks off at 7pm, and Rovers chairperson Garry Collins told The Wicklow People and The Bray People that the trophy will be presented to the new champions ahead of that game, with youth players set to be present to lead the club's congratulations.

Owen Elding strike sends Sligo Rovers through as Bohemians knocked out of FAI Cup
Some might say that this was a deserved win for Sligo Rovers, who made the last eight of this season's Sports Direct Men's FAI Cup courtesy of a 53rd-minute goal by Owen Elding and a brilliant goalkeeping display by Rovers netminder Sam Sargent. Elding's crisp finish, and Sargent's heroics, which included a penalty save from Dayle Rooney early in the second period, knocked out the seven-time winners, and ensured the Gypsies' long wait for cup success, the last in 2008, goes on for another season at least. With Oasis booked in for gigs up the road at Croke Park this weekend, Bohs wore their away strip of all blue, with the band's logo on the front of the shirts as hits of the one-time bad boys of rock 'n' roll blasted out over the speakers at the North Dublin venue. The home side also wore t-shirts in the warm-up in tribute to the late Suleiman al-Obeid, 'the Palestinian Pelé', who was killed in Gaza. Before the game Sligo also announced the signing of defender Edwin Agbaje on a short-term deal until the end of the season and the 21-year-old Offaly native was on the bench as he joined the Bit O'Red having departed Ipswich Town. Agbaje was introduced to the game in the 52nd minute making his Rovers debut as a substitute for right-back Leigh Kavanagh. The game was typical cup fare, end to end, with both sides going for it in a helter-skelter tie, and there were chances a plenty. As early as the 14th minute, a mistake by Bohs skipper Keith Buckley saw his heavy touch gift the ball to Jad Hakki, but as the Ireland Under-21 international headed for goal, James Talbot came quickly off his line and nicked the ball away. Moments later at the other end, Sargent saved well at his near post as Conor Parsons' shot was beaten away by the Sligo keeper. Just past the half hour Sligo went close to breaking the deadlock as Sebastian Quirk steered Will Fitzgerald's corner just past Talbot's right-hand post. Sligo went even closer in the 35th minute when Ryan O'Kane's corner was met by defender Paddy McLean, but his header was brilliantly cleared off the line by Buckley. The end-to-end nature of the first half continued as Parsons shifted the ball expertly from his right to left foot, but his shot from just inside the area was just wide. Sargent then stopped a rising shot from Rooney that was on target as the London-born keeper saved a certain goal with a fine one-handed save. Sargent kept the game scoreless just after the restart as the home side missed an opportunity to break the deadlock, with the Sligo keeper guessing the right way to save the spot kick, awarded when Paddy McLean took down Dawson Devoy in the area. To rub salt into the home side's wounds, Sligo then hit the front as Fitzgerald set up Elding (above) and his snapshot, left-footed from the edge of the area, was placed beautifully past the outstretched hands of Talbot. Not long after, Sargent kept Sligo in front, saving one-handed from his own defender Ollie Denham whose attempted clearance come up off his foot. Late on Sargent was at it again, saving a shot from Bohs sub Rhys Brennan at his near post. The hosts upped the pressure on the away goal in the remaining minutes but Sligo held on to put their name in next week's quarter-final draw as boos rang out from the home support at the final whistle. Bohs' FAI Cup hopes fade away for another year as Sligo stun Dalymount
BOHS fans watched their side's FAI Cup hopes slide away for another year thanks to a missed penalty and Owen Elding's supersonic finish for Rovers. The hosts hoped passage into the last eight was written in the stars as they wore their Oasis jerseys on the eve of the band's first Croke Park gig, and after the Gallagher brothers' hits had rang out around Dalymount Park before kick-off. But it was Rovers boss John Russell who had the masterplan in Phibsboro as the visitors - 10th in the Premier Division and 17 points behind their second placed opponents - deserved their victory. An entertaining first half somehow ended in stalemate - and it was followed by an electric start to the second that ultimately decided it. Dayle Rooney had the chance to put Bohs ahead from the penalty spot just two minutes after the restart when Paddy McClean knocked Dawson Devoy over, but the midfielder's tame effort was well read by Sam Sargeant. And the Gypsies were made to pay in the 53rd minute. The excellent William Fitzgerald beat Keith Buckley in midfield and found Elding, and the striker shot across James Talbot into the far corner to open the scoring. Bohs' best chance of an equaliser came just five minutes later when Rooney's low cross from the left was deflected towards the top corner by Rovers defender Ollie Denham, but Sargeant superbly tipped it over. The Gypsies' loud appeal for a 58th minute penalty was rightly waved away by ref Kevin O'Sullivan as Rovers sub Edwin Agbaje got a touch ahead of Parsons to concede a corner. From that point the visitors' defence put up a wonderwall to keep Alan Reynolds' side at bay, with only Rhys Brennan's 90th minute effort that Sargeant dived to keep out causing alarm for Rovers. The hosts had looked nervy in defence early on as Sligo went to Fitzgerald and the pacy Ryan O'Kane on the flanks in search of joy. The visitors signalled their intent with a 10th minute Fitzgerald free that McClean just failed to meet with the right connection and his effort went wide. Soon after, Jad Hakiki Keith Buckley on halfway and had only Talbot to beat, but the Bohs keeper was lightning quick from his area to prevent a goal with a superb tackle. The Gypsies produced an instant warning of their own via Connor Parsons, but his near post shot was comfortably covered by Rovers netminder Sargeant. However the hosts should have scored in the 19th minute when Cian Byrne met Dayle Rooney's corner with a header that somehow glided past the near post. Bohs' mini-purple patch didn't last long. Recent Rovers Seb Quirke prodded wide from a Fitzgerald corner, then McClean met O'Kane's corner with a powerful header that Buckley cleared off the line. Parsons combined with Devoy before the break, with the former's attempt arrowed wide, but Bohs had work to do at half-time as they had been second best for most of that opening period. The penalty was their chance to take control but they failed to take it - and after all, it was Elding's effort that propelled Rovers into the last eight. Their dreams are real of lifting the Cup for the first time since 2013, while Bohs fans left Dalyer looking back in anger at a deserved exit.

Edwin Agbaje joins Sligo Rovers following Ipswich Town departure
FULL-BACK EDWIN Agbaje has signed a short-term deal with Sligo Rovers, the club have confirmed. The Offaly native, who operates mainly on the right side, joins the Bit O'Red having departed EFL Championship side Ipswich Town recently. He links up with Rovers having penned a deal until the end of the current season and joins subject to international transfer clearance. Advertisement The 21-year-old began his life in football at local side Edenderry Town, before moving on to join the academy at Shamrock Rovers at 14. Two years later, he was picked up by Ipswich and spent five years there and was also loaned to both Sutton United and Yeovil Town. Agbaje has represented the Republic of Ireland at various underage levels and was named Ipswich's Academy Player of the Year in 2023. His availability for tonight's (Friday) game with Bohemians is ITC dependent. Agbaje is the seventh new player in the door this summer as manager John Russell looks to finish the season on as strong a note as possible. Sligo are currently seven points clear of bottom-placed Cork City, whose form has finally ticked upwards with a home win over Galway followed by a draw away to Derry. Speaking to the club's website, Agbaje said: 'I spoke to people at the club a lot over the summer and got to hear in detail about the style of play and how things are done here at Rovers. 'It really impressed me and Sligo seems like a place where I can really fit in. It's a great place for young players like myself to develop. John (Russell) has a proven track record of bringing through, developing and giving chances to younger players like me so the opportunity here speaks for itself. Russell said: 'Edwin is an extremely talented player. He's got all the attributes you look for in a defender. He has pace, he's strong, aggressive and good on the ball. We feel he can make a big impact here between now and the end of the season.'
