Selena Gomez returned to the Upper West Side this week—on set, at least—offering a first glimpse at the fashion of Only Murders in the Building 's fifth season. Filming in New York City on June 9, the singer-actor teased two distinct looks that hint at the evolving aesthetic of her character, Mabel Mora, whose wardrobe has become a character of the show in its own right.
The first look, from back in May, saw Gomez lean into a stealthy heist style with a long-sleeve turtleneck layered under a faux leather shirt-dress by Nanushka, opaque black tights, heeled boots by Paul Andrew and a roomy quilted Prada tote. Later, she was photographed wearing a bright blue leather coat over the top. Selena Gomez is seen on the set of the TV series 'Only Murders in the Building' on May 07, 2025 in New York City. Now, as the cast returns to filming scenes on the streets of New York City, Gomez was pictured again in two leather looks over the weekend. Dressed in a noir, faux-leather coat by A.W.A.K.E. Mode, studded with silver snap buttons all over, Gomez's Mabel looked ready for another day of sleuthing—this time with a polished edge. Later, she switched gears, buttoning up a tailored navy jacket by Nili Lotan, an Alex Perry maroon pinstripe skirt and sheer, printed tights. Navy blue suede boots by Jeffrey Campbell also featured white stripes on the side, and dangling silver earrings completed the look, evoking a slightly moodier prep aesthetic. Behind the scenes, Emmy-nominated costume designer Dana Covarrubias continues to bridge Gomez's off-screen elegance with Mabel's boldness.
While not much has been shared regarding season five's plot, photos from the show's set promise even more sartorial intrigue—and A-list cameos, too. Expect appearances from Renée Zellweger, Diane Wiest, Bobby Cannavale and Téa Leoni alongside the beloved trio of Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short, and Meryl Streep. There's no release date just yet—but if these early glimpses are any indication, season five will be as stylishly sharp as it is suspenseful.

Sabrina Carpenter's New Album Cover Isn't Going Down Well With Fans

Sabrina Carpenter performs on stage during the Short N' Sweet Tour held at Madison Square Garden on September 29, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Christopher Polk/Rolling Stone via Getty Images) Sabrina Carpenter is no stranger to a bit of controversy. Honestly, it's a part of her charm. Over the last year, her Short 'n' Sweet tour had many critics clutching their pearls, mostly due to her risqué outfits and tongue-in-cheek choreography that imitated some X-rated activities. Nonetheless, the singer remained undeterred, telling those who had a problem, 'Just don't come to the show.' Now, it looks like her latest album won't be bending to naysayers, and is already drawing criticism before even being released, thanks to some bold cover art. This Wednesday, June 11, the singer announced the upcoming release of her new album Man's Best Friend over Instagram. This reveal comes less than a week after the surprise drop of her single 'Manchild' (which will be on the album). Image via With the announcement, the pop star dropped what looks to be the album cover, which features her on all fours in a black mini dress and stilettos. A mostly off-camera suited figure looms over her, clutching a fistful of the singer's signature golden locks. Accompanying the cover reveal was a second image, featuring a close-up of a fluffy dog wearing a collar that read, 'Man's best friend.' But it isn't the latter image that fans are taking issue with. Carpenter's pop identity and predominantly female fan base have been built on an unapologetic embrace of female sexuality and empowerment. However, some feel this latest cover misses the mark, particularly considering the current state of political affairs and women's subjugation. 'This cover isn't landing the way you thought it would right now. The timing…' commented one fan. 'This better be the most feminist, woman empowering album ever with a cover like this, Sabrina,' said another. (Photo by Christopher Polk/Rolling Stone via Getty Images) On the other hand, there were those fans who didn't see an issue. 'It's Sabrina Carpenter… her whole shtick is satire,' and 'Men treat women like dogs. That's the joke,' two supporters commented on the intended irony. Another stated, 'There's nothing wrong with the album cover in my opinion. She's an adult… she might actually be into it?' The context of the cover's controversy may be surmised by a comment from one fan on the supposed intentions behind the art, stating, 'Any irony is lost because the people who are supposed to be offended by this actually want this.' Carpenter's true intentions behind the cover choice will not be clear until the album drops this August. However, if the rest of the album is similar to Manchild, then 'dumb' but nonetheless 'sexy' men may be of note, in which case the reception of any intended irony may be blurred in today's climate. Doechii Used Her BET Award Acceptance Speech to Address LA Protests

Doechii accepts the Best Female Hip-hop Artist award onstage during the 2025 BET Awards at Peacock Theatre on June 09, 2025, in Los Angeles, California. (Photo byfor BET) Award show acceptance speeches have long been a platform for artists from all creative industries to take a stand. In 1972, Jane Fonda accepted her Best Actress Oscar with a speech against America's war in Vietnam. A year later, Marlon Brando sent Sacheen Littlefeather to reject his Best Actor award for The Godfather on his behalf, in protest of the treatment of Native Americans. From protesting the Iraq war to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, Black Lives Matter, and the #MeToo movement, we have come to appreciate the platform that speech times provide during awards season. Activist Sacheen Littlefeather speaks after rejecting the Academy Award on behalf of Best Actor winner Marlon Brando. (Getty Images) At this week's BET Awards, Doechii was the latest in the line of many to take on this mantle—dressed in head-to-toe Miu Miu, no less. Accepting her award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, she began by acknowledging her fellow nominees before taking the time to address the leading sociopolitical issues of the time. The 'Anxiety' singer began by addressing the anti-ICE immigration raid protests happening in LA, not too far away from where the ceremony was taking place at Peacock Theatre, and the US federal government's authoritarian response to the protestors. 'There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,' she declared. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest. And I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?' Winner of Best Female Hip Hop Artist US rapper singer Doechii speaks on stage during the 2025 BET Awards at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on June 9, 2025. (Photo by Michael Tran / AFP) (Photo by MICHAEL TRAN/AFP via Getty Images) She went on to address the weight of influence and the responsibility and influence celebrities hold in 2025. 'I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people: for Black people, for Latino people, for Trans people, for the people in Gaza.' While some may be cynical about celebrities speaking on political issues, we know that influential names can make significant waves with their solidarity and draw attention to issues that matter. That said, speaking up can come with great risk, especially for a budding artist like Doechii. But at last night's awards, she still chose to be the role model we need in these times.
