RCB craze: Restaurants, pubs in Bengaluru sold out for IPL final day

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team reaching the finals of Indian Premier League (IPL) finals and the final match being played on Tuesday (June 3), has come as a blessing in disguise for the restobars and pubs in Bengaluru as most of them are expecting two or three times more than usual footfall on the day. 'On a regular Tuesday, our footfall is only around 350 – 400 covers. But on the final day, we are expecting at least 700 – 800 people as we do not have any cover charge and are open to all,' said Vinay Chandrashekhar, partner at Long Boat Brewing Co, Marathahalli. Alister Braganza, Senior Regional Business Manager, South, Impressario which owns SOCIAL, which has multiple outlets in the City, said that the footfall on Tuesday is expected to be three times more than a regular weekday. 'We were filled across outlets on the day of Qualifier match itself. The crowd is going to be even higher for finals,' he said. To enhance the match viewing experience, most restaurants in the City have decided to erect gaint LED screens on their premises, introduce some new items on the menu, play popular Kannada songs, distributing sparklers and some are even organising face painting and such activities. 'We are putting up 8 feet by 12 feet LED screen in a special area which can be viewed from both the floors,' Mr. Chandrashekhar shared. He also said that a 32-inch pizza has also been introduced as large groups of people are expected to gather on the day. Red-coloured shots representing RCB's jersey colours to big snack platters and beer buckets are some of the other items restaurants are preparing for Tuesday. Early bookings The hospitality industry, which has been facing several issues of late including the rising prices of beer, says that IPL has been a saviour for them this time considering the home team's good form. 'We have 300 reservations for dinner and all of them have already sold out. We are keeping a few covers for walk-ins. The moment RCB reached finals, we got a lot of bookings,' said Fino Frangline, Co-Founder of Mykos Craft Kitchen and Bar, Bannerghatta Road and 21st Amendment Gastrobar, Indiranagar. He added, 'Our Indiranagar outlet, which is in the heart of the city was constantly sold out for RCB matches. On the day RCB won the Qualifier, within an hour, we were sold out for the final match day. As most venues have already sold out, cricket enthusiasts are also finding it difficult to find places where they can go for a screening. 'I stay close to J. P. Nagar and there are plenty of options. But I am sure the regulars will throng those places, and it is looking impossible to get a reservation anywhere for the match day. I am planning to go to one of the lesser popular restobars as a walk-in and hope to find a table,' said Sirish. M. Kumar, an RCB fan. With most restaurants expected to be jam-packed on Tuesday, restraunteurs are requesting their patrons to take public transport. 'The city is going to be chock-a-block on that day and hence, we are advising our patrons to not drive but take cabs or public transport. Parking is also going to be an issue if there are too many vehicles,' said Chethan Hegde, who heads the Bengaluru chapter of National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI).

IPL giant GMR tackles rugby with India League, aims to build Olympic-aligned IP

MUMBAI: GMR Sports, best known for its Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise cricket team Delhi Capitals, is making an ambitious foray into rugby with the launch of the Rugby Premier League (RPL). First announced in December 2024, the league's inaugural season kicks off later this month, with six teams and backing from some of India's prominent corporate houses. The league will run from 15 June to 29 June, with two matches scheduled on weekdays and three on weekends. RPL is being launched in partnership with Rugby India, with GMR serving as the commercial and operational partner for the league. The company currently owns cricket franchises across the IPL (50% in Delhi Capitals), the International League T20 (Dubai Capitals), Major League Cricket (Seattle Orcas with a clutch of investors, including Satya Nadella, Soma Somasegar and others), and in the Legends League Cricket (India Capitals). It also owns franchises across the Pro Kabaddi League (UP Yoddhas) and the Ultimate Kho Kho (Telugu Yoddhas). But now, GMR Sports is looking to also own and operate sports intellectual properties (IPs). 'We've built strong internal capabilities managing teams, but the real value lies in creating leagues and IPs. Rugby ticked all the boxes—it's an Olympic sport, it has global corporate interest, and World Rugby has committed a dedicated window so the best players will be available,' Satyam Trivedi, CEO, GMR Sports, told Mint in an exclusive interaction. Rugby may barely register in mainstream Indian consciousness, but the federation claims the sport is played across more than 250 districts. 'It's still under the radar, but there's a strong grassroots base and a very structured federation. We've had a great experience working with Rugby India and its president, Rahul Bose,' Trivedi added. Rugby, originated in England in the 19th century, is a high-intensity, full-contact sport where two teams compete to carry, pass, and ground an oval ball in the opponent's territory to score points. RPL brings this sport to a broader Indian audience through a fast-paced, Olympic-aligned format. The league will follow the Rugby Sevens format, but with a tweak: four quarters of four minutes each, designed to make the matches faster and more TV-friendly. This mirrors the shift in sports consumption, where younger audiences increasingly prefer highlights, reels, and short-form formats over full-length broadcasts. GMR sees it as a short-format product tailor-made for younger audiences used to consuming sports in bite-sized bursts. Each match will last 22 minutes. The six franchise teams and their respective owners are: Mumbai Dreamers (Dream Sports); Hyderabad Heroes (KLO Sports); Kalinga Black Tigers (Hunch Ventures); Chennai Bulls (AvidSys); Delhi Redz (RMZ); and Bengaluru Bravehearts (a consortium of Manipal Group's Ranjan Pai, Soham Energy's Sanjith Sethi, and InCred's Bhupinder Singh). Player selection has been conducted via a central draft, and each squad consists of 13 players—five marquee internationals, three 'bridge' players from mid-tier rugby nations, and five Indians. A unique playing format ensures two marquee, two bridge, and two Indian players take the field at all times, with the seventh player decided by the coach. The league will be broadcast on Star Sports and streamed on JioHotstar, with Dream11 roped in as fantasy partner from the first season itself. 'Youth today want to engage across multiple touchpoints—fantasy, merchandise, stats, social media. So we've designed this to be a full-stack, digital-first sports product,' said Trivedi. Despite the optimism, rugby's lack of visibility in India presents a steep challenge. GMR acknowledges that and plans to run simple, explanatory marketing to introduce the game to new audiences. 'We don't expect everyone to understand the rules right away. The goal is to simplify and attract viewers—then build from there,' he said. Financials remain undisclosed due to the non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with team owners, but the business model mirrors other Indian leagues: central revenues, franchise-level sponsorships, and broadcast tie-ups. GMR doesn't expect a quick break-even. 'It's at least a three to four-year journey, not just for revenue but for awareness and fandom to build,' Trivedi said. To avoid the '15-day season' pitfall of many Indian leagues, GMR plans to keep engagement alive year-round via college, school and franchise-led activations. 'We're not treating this as a seasonal event—it's a full-year commitment, including grassroots development,' he added. Beyond commercial returns, GMR is also positioning RPL as a contribution to India's Olympic ambitions. 'If we can help Indian rugby players reach international clubs or the Olympics, that's a win too. This isn't just a business—we see it as part of nation-building in sport,' said Trivedi. The league enters a crowded market already grappling with audience fatigue and underperforming properties, but GMR believes RPL's international character, short format and year-round engagement give it a fighting chance. If successful, the Rugby Premier League could set a new precedent for how niche sports are built in India. If not, it will be another reminder of how hard it is to crack the post-cricket code.

IPL rush bowls over Ahmedabad's hotels, eateries

Ahmedabad: The city's hospitality scene is hitting shots out of the boundaries, thanks to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 fever gripping the city. With two high-voltage matches — the Eliminator clash between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians on Sunday and the grand finale on June 3 — lined up at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, hotels and food & beverage businesses are enjoying a summer surge. Traditionally, May and June are considered off-season months, when scorching heat keeps footfalls low and occupancy rates dip. But this year, the buzz around IPL has turned what is usually a lean period into a business bonanza. "The excitement surrounding IPL 2025 leads to a noticeable surge in cricket enthusiasts travelling to Ahmedabad. Almost all hotels are seeing high occupancies. We have guests — from teams and fans to corporate delegations — coming from across the country this season," said Keenan McKenzie, cluster general manager, ITC Narmada. Hotel occupancy across all segments, from luxury to budget, has climbed above 85%. IPL-driven traffic is not only checking in but also indulging in premium services and IPL-themed culinary experiences. Hoteliers report a strong demand for curated late-night menus, in-room dining, and special fan engagement events. "After the usual lull in May, IPL has brought back a tremendous sense of momentum," said Puneet Baijal, general manager, Hyatt Regency Ahmedabad. "Occupancy is seeing a sharp uptick, with a diverse range of guests, including solo travelers, large groups of fans, families, and corporate contingents, coming in from all over the country," he explained. Restaurants and cafes, too, are cashing in on the cricketing carnival, rolling out live match screenings, themed menus, and match-hour deals — both in-house and through delivery platforms. Several outlets report a 40–50% surge in footfalls on match days, driven largely by the city's youth eager to soak in the stadium-like atmosphere. The trend reflects the impact of sports tourism seen in the city to attract both local patrons and out-of-town visitors. Vikas Sood, general manager, The Leela Gandhinagar and Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre, explains, "Sports tourism is clearly emerging as a powerful driver for the hospitality sector in Ahmedabad, and events like these help hotels bounce back during the summer months. The trend is common in several developed economies. During events like IPL, the benefit is not limited to the hospitality sector alone but extends to F&B, fitness and wellness, and transport businesses, which is seen in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. IPL 2025 is a precursor to several bigger sporting events taking place here." For Ahmedabad, which has been steadily building its profile as a sporting destination, events like these are proving to be economic lifelines for local businesses during an otherwise dull period.
