Three arrested, one sought following Kenner shooting
According to the Kenner Police Department, officers began responding to the shooting, which happened around 2425 West Metairie Ave., around 4:53 p.m. Initial information from the caller who reported the shooting stated that the suspects were heading south on Roosevelt Boulevard.

On scene, officers say they found a 14-year-old male who had been shot in his leg. He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and released later that day.
Following a search, KPD officials said 17-year-old Tory Nelson, of Metairie; 21-year-old Jason King, of Kenner and 17-year-old Rayfield Lee, also of Kenner, were found and arrested in connection with the incident. Through victim identification and interviews, investigators identified Nelson as the alleged shooter with King and Lee as alleged accomplices.
KPD officials say that after the shooting, the Nelson allegedly handed off his firearm to his brother, a juvenile, who then reportedly fled south on a bicycle. He remains at large; however, an arrest warrant was obtained for his involvement.

Nelson faces charges of aggravated battery, illegal use of a weapon and obstruction of justice. King faces charges of principal to aggravated battery and obstruction of justice. Lee faces charges of principal to aggravated battery, obstruction of justice, possession of schedule I narcotics and possession of schedule II narcotics.

Nassau County's new state-of-the-art police training village is now open
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman took House Homeland Security Committee Chair Andrew Gabarino and former Rep. Peter King on a tour of the new David S. Mack Center for Training and Intelligence on Tuesday. It's a state-of-the-art police training village, with all the things one might expect to find anywhere in the country, including a bank, house of worship, school, and a Long Island Rail Road train and platform. Other features include a gas station, split-level home, a courtroom, bar and restaurant, and a police station, all for training purposes. "We can do active shooter [training] in here," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said of the train station. "Colin Ferguson, the anniversary passed last year." Ryder touted the features of the police station. "It's like any other station house, has a real fingerprint and photograph machine. These are real, certified cells," Ryder said. "We should be bringing people from all over the country to train here. This is a fantastic site," Garbarino said. Blakeman said he has had inquiries from all over the globe. "We also share with other agencies, both domestic and international," Blakeman said. On Tuesday, local, state and federal law enforcement met to share counterterrorism ideas within the sprawling Mack Center. Some in Nassau County criticized spending $70 million on the center rather than addressing the way police work. "It's important for our police officers to be ready in a worst-case scenario situation. But it's also important for them to know how to de-escalate certain situations, and we want to make sure they have those resources," Nassau County Legislator Seth Koslow said. "I'm going to work with our state and local guys to make sure that a 9/11 never happens again," Garbarino said.

Hello! I'm Crystal, and I write the That Got Dark newsletter, BuzzFeed's weekly roundup of all things creepy, macabre, and horrible AF. Here's what the newsletter is covering this week: The extremely graphic story of Japan's 'Twitter Killer.' In June 2025, a serial killer in Japan named Takahiro Shiraishi, known as the "Twitter Killer," was executed by hanging — Japan's first execution since 2022. Shiraishi had been convicted of murdering and dismembering nine people (eight of them women or teenage girls) in 2020. Back in 2017, Shiraishi would use Twitter (now called X) to lure his victims to his apartment. He specifically targeted users who posted about having suicidal thoughts and would tell them that he could 'help them in their plans.' However, once his victims arrived, Shiraishi sexually assaulted, strangled, and then murdered them. He even dismembered their bodies. Later, authorities would find cooler boxes containing human heads and bones 'with the flesh scraped off.' Shiraishi went on to plead guilty to murdering the victims, saying in court that he had 'killed them to satisfy his own sexual desires.' The creepy experience one of our BuzzFeed Community members had in Monticello, Mississippi — a seemingly quiet southern town. "Dated a girl from there, and aside from the inbreeding that went on, the whole town seemed 'too happy.' I can't describe it. False cheeriness, like the townspeople had something to hide. It felt very surreal. Years later, I learned it was near where they had the Valley of the Kings cult, where the leader and his son were sexually abusing minor-age members of the congregation." The Valley of the Kings Church was a small religious group led by a man named David Earl King. He ran the group from a large compound with homes, a church, and a farm. King had total control over everything, and people who lived there — especially women and children — were often mistreated, with people describing it as cult-like. In 2001, King and his adopted son were arrested and later convicted of sexually abusing a teenage boy, who attended their church and school, and other serious crimes. King died in prison in 2017, and the "church" no longer exists. The (possible) existence of a medieval torture device called a breast ripper. The breast ripper was supposedly used to punish women, especially those accused of things like cheating or having an abortion. It had sharp claws, sometimes heated, that would be clamped onto a woman's breast and then pulled or twisted — just as the name implies. Apparently, there were even versions that attached to a wall where the woman would be pulled away from it instead. Now, there's not a ton of proof that this device was really ever used, but if it was…yikes. The violent and shocking murder of actor Sharon Tate (and her unborn child), along with four others on Aug. 9, 1969. On the night of Aug. 8–9, 1969, Sharon Tate, who was eight and a half months pregnant, was killed by members of the Manson Family cult at her Los Angeles home. Under the direction of Charles Manson, four of his followers — Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian (who served as a lookout) — broke into Tate's home and killed her along with four others: Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, and Steven Parent. The murders were carried out in a frenzy of extreme violence, with the victims being either shot, stabbed (multiple times), or even bludgeoned to death. Tate, who was brutally stabbed and strangled to death, reportedly pleaded for the life of her unborn child before she died. Atkins, Krenwinkel, and Watson (the three who actually committed the murders) were all sentenced to death. Atkins died in prison in 2009, Krenwinkel was recommended for parole in May 2025, and Watson will be eligible for a parole hearing in October 2026. Finally, the case of Bobby Joe Long, aka the "Classified Ad Rapist," who killed at least 10 women in Florida in the '80s. Long was a serial rapist and murderer who terrorized Florida's Tampa Bay area in 1984, killing at least 10 women after previously assaulting dozens. He would target his victims after finding them through personal ads in Florida, thus being called the "Classified Ad Rapist." Long's crime spree ended when 17-year-old Lisa McVey, whom he abducted and later released, provided crucial information that led to his arrest. Convicted of multiple crimes, Long was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection in 2019. His last meal: Roast beef, bacon, French fries, and soda. Heat Advisory returns plus an Extreme Heat Warning starts off the new week!
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – As if Sunday wasn't hot enough, gear up for a toasty start to the new week. Sunday's Heat Advisory ended at 8 p.m. leading to a brief 'cool down' through the overnight, But it'll warm up pretty fast early on come Monday eventually getting up to 96-degrees with mostly sunny skies and a few scattered showers in the forecast. Another Heat Advisory will be in effect for your Monday starting at 10 a.m. and running until 8 p.m. There will also be an Extreme Heat Warning in effect starting at 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. on Monday for the following areas: St. James, St. John The Baptist, St. Charles, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Jefferson, and Plaquemines parishes in addition to Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties. When you put the forecasted temperatures together with the expected 'very humid' conditions, we will surely have Heat Index values nearing or even surpassing the 110-mark. I may sound like a broken record at this point because I can't stress the importance of heat safety and the following simple tips: (a) stay hydrated, (b) limit your time outdoors especially during the peak hours of the day and (c) check-in on family and friends who don't particularly do well in the dangerous heat. With what's currently expected for Tuesday in terms of the temperature and level of humidity, there's a pretty good chance that we could see another Heat Advisory for that day as well.
