The next deadline for TikTok to be sold by ByteDance is Sept. 17. Why is TikTok at risk of getting banned? Some government officials are concerned that TikTok poses a national security threat, believing that ByteDance, which is based in Beijing, is sharing U.S. user data with China. TikTok has repeatedly denied these claims. In January, the platform went dark for less than 24 hours under federal legislation signed into law by former President Joe Biden in 2024. Trump has signed executive orders three times now that push back the deadline for when TikTok must be sold, promising that deals with China are on the horizon. Musk's X back up after brief outage, Downdetector shows
Aug 14 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's X was back up for thousands of users in the U.S. after a short outage on Thursday, according to tracking website Th outage eased to nearly 600 incidents of people reporting issues with the social media platform as of 11:20 a.m. ET, compared to a peak of more than 18,000 user reports, according to Downdetector. Downdetector tracks outages by collating status reports from a number of sources. Since the numbers are based on user-submitted reports, the actual number of affected users may vary. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

X down with thousands reporting issues with social media platform
Thousands of users across the world couldn't load social media platform X this afternoon. DownDetector, a website which monitors internet outages, received over 5,000 reports of problems in the UK starting from around 3.40pm. When we tried logging in, we could open the site but could not load new posts on the timeline. Instead, a message read: 'Something went wrong. Try reloading.' Problems were reported throughout the UK, and there were also over 8,000 reported issues in the US.
