Watch: Marvels of Mzansi come alive in Durban July fashion showdown
And none more so than those of the galloping hearts of designers who have to run their own race in the build-up to race day, as they battle for the prestige of being crowned the Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award winner. Over 130 young designers participated in this year's competition, presented by the Durban Fashion Fair. Guided by the theme, 'Marvels of Mzansi', the designers were tasked with interpreting, conceptualising and creating a garment that will shine a spotlight on the wonders of South Africa – from the landscapes, entertainment and food, to traditional coming of age ceremonies.
From more than 130, the group was whittled down to the top 25, where we met Durban-based Fezile Fashion Academy first year student, Thulethu Gezemdala. She is a qualified graphic designer who found her passion in fashion design. 'Five years ago, I didn't even know how to operate a sewing machine,' said a laughing Gezemdala. 'Who would have thought that today I would be part of such a big fashion event, like the Durban July?'
Gezemdala said when they received the brief detailing the theme for the Durban July, which will be held on July 5, her first thought was jazz. 'I tried it but I could not get into it, so I reached out to our teachers and mentors who helped to give a better understanding of what the theme is about, how to interpret and link our designs to it,' said Gezemdala. 'Originally, I'm from the Eastern Cape and when I travel home for the holidays, I see a lot of mountains, they always pique my interests. I was inspired when I thought of them, and that is where I got my dress design from. The marvellous, majestic mountains and terrain of uMzansi.'

Taking inspiration from various elements, Gezemdala set about creating a masterpiece that will capture the judges. Her dress, which took over four weeks to complete, has the structural peaks of mountains, fog and the crashing waves.
'It's so good to see an idea come to life, very rewarding. I managed to depict the mountains and used painted ice cream sticks for detailing to give that raw feel and look of the rocks. The colour of the bodice draws and pays homage to traditional Mzansi, as it matches the natural 'sunscreen' known as ibomvu (orange or red clay). The ruffles on the waist is how I imagined the fog settling in around the mountains. The tulle skirt, with a hint of bronze and red, is the crashing waves of the uThukela river,' said Gezemdala.
Though her design did not make the top 10, Gezemdala said she was very proud of how far she came in the competition. 'I am grateful for my mom and siblings for their support and my mentors for believing in me. They were with me in the stitching and unstitching, till the very end. I hope that I made them as proud as I am of myself,' said Gezemdala.
Dubbed Africa's Greatest Horse Racing and Fashion Event, the Hollywoodbets Durban July Fashion Experience will come together at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping gala evening on June 27. There, the top 10 student finalists will join the six selected for the Invited Designer Showcase presented by Dove, and the nine chosen to be part of the DFF Rising Stars Collection.

Celebration of landmark film month with powerful stories, historic wins
DURBAN was abuzz during July, known as Film Month, when the industry recorded milestones and honoured its shining stars. Against the vibrant backdrop of Simon Sabela Awards (SSA), school holidays, the Hollywoodbets Durban July, and a suite of world-class film industry events, the city saw a marked increase in visitor numbers, hotel occupancies, and creative output, reinforcing KZN's position as the cultural and tourism heartbeat of South Africa. Hosted and co-ordinated by the KZN Tourism and Film Authority (KZNTAFA), July Film Month 2025 involved three major events – the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), the Durban Film Mart (DFM) and the SSA. 'KwaZulu-Natal came alive this July – not just through film, but across every corridor of our tourism economy,' said a delighted Jackie Motsepe, chief operating officer of KZNTAFA. 'We saw a deliberate crossover between leisure and the creative sector. 'Early indicators reveal that this was one of the most vibrant Julys in recent memory for KZN, drawing tourists and boosting local economies. Tens of thousands of visitors descended on Durban for the Hollywoodbets Durban July, a major crowd-puller on Africa's social calendar. We used Film Month to show the world what KZN can do – from beach to bush, from cinema to celebration – and the response has been extraordinary,' added Motsepe. 'Film Month was more than an industry activation, it was a province-wide celebration that brought together leisure, culture, business and heritage. Durban's streets buzzed with visitors, cinemas came alive with new voices, and red carpets were rolled out for local legends and future stars. Durban July 2025: Local artists elevate their brands on the big stage
Durban July 2025: Local artists elevate their brands on the big stage The Durban July weekend featured a range of local talent, with Thembisa artists representing their brands on the grand stage. Hectic, Siya and Vikk The Groove joined Johnnie Walker to experience the vibrant atmosphere, embracing the chance to mingle, learn and share their craft. Victor Vukeya, known as 'Vikk The Groove', described the event as an opportunity to transcend being just a stage performer and evolve into a brand. ALSO READ: Thembisa artist moves up in the world of entertainment 'Collaborating with Johnnie Walker Blonde was the perfect mix for me. Everything about the experience radiated fun, fashion, vibes and, of course, Blonde moments. Being there with my team at that perfect time was incredible. I'm looking forward to next year.' Vukeya's standout moment was the Boomtown Experience 2025, where Sjava stole the show, in his view. He also fondly recalled his debut set at the Perere Durban marquee. 'The Perere Marquee was my favourite. The celestial decor and homegrown vibe reminded me of home. 'It's clear the time is now; we're rubbing shoulders with the elites, and soon, we'll be the elites. 'This experience elevates me, allowing me to navigate stardom and position myself alongside industry leaders I hope to work with closely in the future. Siyabonga Nkosi shared how interacting with different people broadened his perspective on the industry. 'I'm a people person. Being in Durban was a new space for me, and I had the best time of my life. It was a challenge to interact with so many different folks, but I aced it. 'The Marvels of Mzansi theme was announced only three days before, so I improvised and wore what I felt comfortable in. I guess I was the marvel. 'My highlight was being invited to Durban and receiving VIP treatment. That showed growth in what we do and that we're taken seriously,' Nkosi added. ALSO READ: Tembisa Red Devils celebrate 20 years in entertainment Hectic Nkayane reflected on the up-close experience of the Durban July. 'Witnessing the fashion and the excitement around the horse races was unforgettable. 'I kept my outfit simple, representing the Marvels of Mzansi (iBince) with formal attire inspired by Zulu heritage. What better way to celebrate Zulu culture than wearing traditional attire on Zulu land?' Nkayane's favourite marquees were the Perere by Gushima and the Makubenjalo marquee, which reminded him of the township groove we cherish in Thembisa. 'Being in that space was a privilege, rubbing shoulders with fashion designers, influencers, TV and radio personalities and event co-ordinators. 'I even bumped into DJ Fresh at Boomtown, who told me, 'You are moving in the right direction, keep pushing'. That recognition from huge brands means our work is making an impact, sometimes without us even realising it. I believe we did an impeccable job and hope to be regulars at the event,' Nkayane said. Media personality, DJ and philanthropist Holworthy shared her experience, 'I've been to many Julys, but this one felt different. It wasn't just about looking the part; it was about being the part.
