Anu Aggarwal says Bollywood was ‘ruled by people like Dawood Ibrahim' in the 90s, calls it a ‘dirty business'

Anu Aggarwal, best known for her role in the 1990 film Aashiqui, recently opened up about the Hindi film industry's connection with the underworld during the '90s. 'It was a dirty business. I don't know how dirty it is today,' Anu said in a recent interaction, as she revealed how many films were funded by the underworld at that time.
Speaking to Pinkvilla, she said, 'At that time, it was all under-the-table deals. It was ruled by people like Dawood Ibrahim. All the money that was coming into the film industry came from the underworld. It was a completely different scenario.'
Anu became an overnight sensation after her debut in Aashiqui and had amassed a massive fan following, which, however, put her safety at risk. She revealed that the intense adoration also led her to eventually run away from the film industry. Speaking about the same, she shared, 'For me to walk around alone and live alone at that time… I had fans standing under my building. Luckily, it was an MLA-MP building, so we had police protection. It was madness. People would fly from countries just to see my building, just like how it is for Shah Rukh Khan today. Shah Rukh is my neighbour and that's what used to happen to me, and I ran away from it.'
During the same conversation, she also revealed that she still hasn't been paid her full remuneration for Aashiqui. 'I haven't gotten the full fees for Aashiqui till today. I've only been paid 60% of the full fees. They still owe me the 40%,' the actor alleged.
After Aashiqui, Anu appeared in films like Ghazab Tamasha, King Uncle, Ram Shastra, and more. Her last film was 1996's Return of Jewel Thief. In 1999, she met with a serious accident that left her in a coma for 29 days. Following the accident, Anu never returned to acting.

Indian box office records strongest month of 2025 with Rs 1,430 crore in July

The Indian box office recorded gross collections of Rs 1,430 crore in July, making it the strongest month of the year so far, according to data from Ormax Media. The growth was led by two major titles, the Hindi film Saiyaara and the multi-lingual animated feature Mahavatar Narsimha. Together, the two films contributed nearly half of the month's total earnings, making July the highest-grossing month of 2025 so far. The strong showing has reinforced the positive trajectory for the year. Cumulative collections from January to July have reached Rs 7,175 crore, 22% higher than the same period last year. At this pace, 2025 is on course to cross Rs 12,000 crore in annual collections. If it does, it could surpass the record set in 2023, when the domestic box office grossed Rs 12,226 crore. Saiyaara emerged as the top film of July with collections of Rs 392 crore. This places it as the second-highest earner of the year to date, behind Chhaava. The film benefited from strong reviews, audience word of mouth and a successful music album, all of which contributed to steady box office traction. The second-biggest success of the month was Mahavatar Narsimha, which grossed ?259 crore. About 75% of its domestic earnings came from the Hindi version, reflecting the growing appeal of pan-India animated films among Hindi-speaking audiences. Hollywood titles also continued to perform well in the Indian market. Three releases, Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman and The Fantastic Four: The First Steps, featured in July's top 10 list. Their combined success pushed Hollywood's share of the Indian box office to 12% for the January to July period. This is at par with the share in 2022 and higher than the 9% in 2023 and 8% in 2024. Regional industries showed mixed results in July. Kannada cinema saw a notable rise, with the horror-comedy Su From So helping the industry's share move above 2% from less than 1% in June. Malayalam films, however, saw their share decline from 10% in June to 8% in July. Tamil and Telugu releases contributed consistently but did not produce a major hit during the month. Hindi films continue to dominate the box office, with five titles among the year's top 10 so far, excluding multi-lingual productions such as Mahavatar Narsimha. The industry's recovery has been supported by rising footfalls, higher average ticket prices and the continued preference of audiences for large-scale theatrical releases. With several high-profile titles lined up across Hindi, regional and Hollywood segments, trade expectations remain positive for the remainder of the year.

War 2 Extended Week 1 India Box Office: Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, Kiara Advani starrer grosses dismal Rs 231 crore gross in 8 days

War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji, and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani among others, ended its extended week 1, dropping again. The movie has roughly added Rs 5 crore gross more at the India box office, to end with collections of Rs 231 crore after 8 days. The Hindi version of War 2 is propelling the collections while the dubbed versions are down and out. War 2 won't be able to make most of the open week that it has. If the film got a favourable word of mouth, the collections in week 2 would be exceptional. Alas, that has not happened. A final India gross of Rs 275 crore is also not guaranteed based on the poor trend. In the post pandemic, YRF has just had two resounding blockbusters in the form of Pathaan and Saiyaara, and a hit in the form of Tiger 3. The other movies are all flops and disasters. What's interesting is that YRF, despite more failures than successes in the post-pandemic era, has profited well. Saiyaara has been their biggest money-spinner, taking care of all the other losses. The Day Wise Gross India Collections Of War 2 Are Are Under Day India Gross Collections Thursday Rs 59 crore Friday Rs 67 crore Saturday Rs 38 crore Sunday Rs 36 crore Monday Rs 9.50 crore Tuesday Rs 10.50 crore Wednesday Rs 6 crore Thursday Rs 5 crore Total Rs 231 crore gross in 8 days War 2 Has Resulted In A Loss Of Around Rs 30 Crore For YRF War 2's losses are around Rs 30 crore for YRF, unless they bear a part of the losses incurred by the Andhra distributor. If they do bear a part of the losses that the Andhra distributor incurs, then the biggest loser of the movie will be Hrithik Roshan, who took a lower upfront amount than his prevailing market value, so that he could have a share in the profits if the film works. Since the movie hasn't worked, he won't get any backend profits.
