New mobile phone mast goes live on the North York Moors

BBC News30-01-2025

A new phone mast has been switched on in the North York Moors National Park - an area notorious for bad mobile phone connectivity. The mast is being used by four different providers and means more people and businesses in areas including Helmsley and Harome will be able to access the 4G network. The government-funded mast upgrades have now been activated as part of the Shared Rural Network (SRN). It is situated about three miles north of Helmsley and it is claimed it will reduce the "digital divide" between urban and rural communities.
Since the Shared Rural Network programme began in 2020, an additional 21,000 square miles (34,000km) have received coverage from all four operators, EE, Three, VMO2 and Vodafone.
Fewer masts
Ben Roome, CEO of Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited - a joint venture of the UK mobile network operators - said four years ago only 41% of national parks had mobile coverage."Now, we're in the process of really lifting that up, with the North York Moors Authority really keen that all the premises on the North York Moors have mobile coverage, and the roads are covered," he said.Mr Roome said good 4G coverage in an area of "not many other people" should give users an experience that is "as good - if not better" than 5G in busy city centre locations. He said there were objections to installing infrastructure in national parks but sharing sites meant fewer masts."It means less power, it means less disruption and better value for money from the public purse."When you're putting all the operators onto one site as well, you're impacting the environment less," he added.

Nintendo Switch 2 UK stock live: Where to buy a console today

It's now been over a week since the Nintendo Switch 2 launched, and stock is still vanishing fast. Amazon briefly restocked this morning, but it sold out in under five minutes. But it's not all doom and gloom, the console is now in stock at the My Nintendo Store. EE is still offering the console to existing customers, while ShopTo has it available on back order, with delivery expected from 18 June at the earliest. Elsewhere, Argos, JD Williams, Smyths Toys and Very all restocked last week, but sold out within minutes. I'm updating this page with the latest stock updates as well as the latest Nintendo Switch 2 news, so keep checking back. This is the only Nintendo Switch 2 stock checker you need. Where to buy the Nintendo Switch 2 right now Nintendo Switch 2 specs The Switch 2 might look familiar, but there's a lot going on underneath. It's powered by a new custom Nvidia chip, so games don't just load faster, they look better and run more smoothly. You get 12GB of RAM (up from 4GB on the original Switch), and most of that goes straight into powering games, not just background stuff. The screen is still LCD, not OLED, but it's bigger at 7.9in and has 1080p resolution. It supports HDR and a 120Hz refresh rate. Colours pop more, and motion looks buttery-smooth in handheld mode. There's also DLSS upscaling built in, so older games look better. Sadly, while it supports variable refresh rates, it doesn't work when docked – just in handheld mode. Nintendo Switch 2 price The Nintendo Switch 2 on its own costs £399.99, and the main bundle with Mario Kart World costs £429.99. Buying the bundle saves you £40 compared to picking up the game separately, so it's better value if you're planning to grab it anyway. No big discounts yet – it's only been out a week, after all – but some retailers have larger, more expensive bundles. These include the new Switch 2 camera (£49, the Pro controller (£74.99, and the official carry case and screen protector (£20.99, as well as extra games and accessories. Nintendo Switch 2 launch games There are plenty of new Nintendo Switch 2 games at launch. Mario Kart World is the big one, but you've also got upgraded versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, plus mammoth games like Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition and Hogwarts Legacy – two games that really test the console's muscle. Other launch day games include Hades 2, Split Fiction, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Street Fighter 6, Survival Kids and Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. You've also got Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, and Deltarune Chapters 1–4, plus more niche picks like Fantasy Life i and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD. Civilization VII and No Man's Sky are here too, and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour acts as a mini showcase for the new hardware. On top of that, loads of older Nintendo titles have been patched with free performance updates, and Wind Waker, F-Zero GX and Soul Calibur II are now available through the new Switch Online GameCube library. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller is a big step up from the original, but it has been selling out as quickly as the console itself. It finally has two re-mappable triggers on the back, there's a built-in a headphone jack for a wired headset, and there's a C button for GameChat. Right now, the only place where you can buy one is at Amazon. When you finally get your Nintendo Switch 2, you'll notice that you won't be able to slot your current microSD cards in and play your existing games. While you can transfer them over from your OG Switch to the new one, you'll need a microSSD Express card – not the regular one. The official one from Nintendo and SanDisk gives you an extra 256GB of storage and costs £49.99.

Mobile network offering DOUBLE data SIM-only deal – get 200GB for £12p/m

For anyone looking to switch networks, it's a great time to upgrade. Smarty has some seriously good data boosting SIM-only plans right now, with up to 200GB of data for just £12. 1 Smarty SIM-only deal, 100GB 200GB data for £12/month BUY FROM SMARTY I've covered SIM-only deals for a while now, and over time, you learn to spot the real gems from the overhyped fluff. This latest offer from Smarty is easily one of the better ones to pop up in recent months. Right now, Smarty is running two impressive promotions that boost data without hiking up the price. If you're someone who chews through mobile data, these are well worth a look. The first is its 16GB plan, which has just been bumped up to 50GB per month, all while staying at just £8. The real eye-catcher, though, is Smarty's 100GB plan, which has now been doubled to 200GB for just £12 a month. That's a huge amount of data for a great price, especially since there's usually a big leap between low GB plans and Unlimited. Deals like this make Unlimited plans feel less necessary, and are ideal if you're not a heavy user but still want peace of mind. It's also a great time to join Smarty, as the provider runs on Three's network, which is in line for some major improvements following Three's merger with Vodafone. That means better coverage and faster speeds are likely on the horizon as the networks start sharing infrastructure. Best SIM-only deals from Smarty If you want to spend less and use less data, or if Unlimited is what you need, Smarty has plenty of other budget-friendly deals going right now. Smarty plans are all rolling 1-month contracts, meaning you're never locked in and can switch or cancel easily. It's another reason the network is a favourite for budget-savvy shoppers. And if you're in the market for a new handset too, this week has delivered some tempting extras in the Android world. One major provider is offering a free tech bundle worth £410 when you pick up the latest Honor phone, with plans starting from just £20 per month. If these deals aren't quite the right fit, check out our roundup of the best SIM-only deals across the big networks.

Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 A new survey from GoCompare reveals what broadband firms offer the best prices Credit: Alamy The price comparison site said of the firms offering broadband deals with speeds between the 100 to 249 megabits per second (Mbps) range, Sky came out cheapest, according to households it surveyed. Among Sky customers receiving speeds in this range, a quarter reported paying less than £21 per month - the highest proportion of the providers included in the survey. Meanwhile, 2% said they were being charged between £11 and £15. Virgin Media and Vodafone were tied in second place for cheapest broadband deals, according to customers surveyed. GoCompare said just 13% of both providers' users paid £20 or less for deals in the same speed range. The vast majority were paying between £16 and £20 although 4% of Vodafone's users were charged less and 1% of Virgin Media's paying £10 or under. Around one in 10 (12%) BT customers said they were paying below the £21 mark. However, 4% said they pay just £10 per month or less. Meanwhile, only 11% of EE's users were found to be paying under £21 and 6% were in the lowest price bracket of £11 or less - the most of the providers listed. GoCompare said that the customer survey revealed providers generally charge between £21 and £30 per month for broadband speeds in the 100 to 249Mbps range. CHECK YOUR SPEED: Broadband That means a customer opting for a £21 a month deal over a £30 a month deal would save £108 per year. How firms compared on internet service and customer service GoCompare's survey also looked at how broadband firms fared in terms of service reliability. The price comparison website found Plusnet was the most reliable by customers it surveyed. It said 92% of Plusnet customers reported that their service had been reliable over the last 12 months. Meanwhile, 65% described it as "very reliable". Sky, BT and EE customers surveyed reported similar levels of service reliability. Of the BT customers surveyed, 94% reported having a reliable service but just 58% branded it "very reliable". EE and Sky received the same customer scores, with 92% of their users describing their broadband service as "reliable". But, only just over half of both firms' customers stated it was "very reliable". Three received some of the best scores for customer service. Just under half (49%) of its users stated that the provider offered 'good' customer service, with a total of 62% giving a positive response. EE was close behind, with over half (57%) of its users giving the provider's service a positive response overall, with roughly a quarter (26%) stating it was 'very good'. Plusnet came in a very close third in this category, with 54% giving a positive answer, and a quarter (25%) saying the service was 'very good'. Vodafone received marginally more positive responses than Plusnet, 55%, but only a fifth described it as 'very good'. Matt Sanders, broadband expert at said: 'Broadband users will always want a deal with the fastest speeds for the lowest price possible. "Our statistics suggest that Sky are providing a high proportion of users with below-average prices for decent speeds, highlighting them as a strong choice for cost-conscious customers. 'But price isn't the only factor to consider when deciding on the right broadband deal for you. "Reliability and good quality customer service are also important. "Plus, many broadband deals include extras like TV packages, so while one might be low-cost, another might be better value for money when all the additions are taken into account. 'For this reason, before committing to a package, it's always a good idea to compare providers to find out which offers the best deal for your needs. "Doing so regularly will make sure you're still getting the best offer possible." The Sun asked EE to comment.
