BRINGING BACK MEMORIES of their 2016 Joey Carbery-inspired final win, Hugh Cooney stamped his mark all over Clontarf's riveting 22-21 victory over defending champions Cork Constitution at the Aviva Stadium.
Carbery was a Leinster Academy player when he steered Clontarf to their second Energia All-Ireland League title, and the 21-year-old Cooney followed suit with a player-of-the-match performance today that saw him score a try, save one, and supply two try assists.
A 74th-minute converted score from Connor Fahy, Cooney's 20-year-old centre partner, was just enough to get Clontarf over the finish line, despite Cork Constitution replying through replacement Jacob Sheahan with three minutes left.
It is a fourth Division 1A crown for Andy Wood's men, and their first since 2022. With Cork Con missing out on retaining the top flight trophy, Shannon remain the last team to go back-to-back in the mid-2000s.

James Taylor, the player-of-the-match in last year's final, converted tries from Sean French (27 minutes) and Adam Maher (38) as Cork Con twice came from behind to lead 14-12 at half-time.
Armed with the vast majority of the possession and territory, Clontarf should have been in front but Conor Kelly, the division's top points scorer, uncharacteristically missed two penalty attempts and pulled a conversion wide.
The talismanic Cooney crossed and set up Clontarf captain Dylan Donnellan's 15th try of the season. The table toppers failed to take advantage of Ronán O'Sullvan's sin-binning, but Kelly was back on target with a 46th-minute penalty.
It remained 15-14 to 'Tarf with Taylor and Kelly both missing penalties, before Wexford youngster Fahy, in his first year at the club, stormed over for a cracking try which Kelly converted, putting eight points in it.
Sheahan rallied Cork Con by bursting over off a lineout maul, with Taylor's crisp conversion restoring the one-point gap. However, lively replacement Oran Walsh came up with a late turnover to seal a famous All-Ireland senior and Under-20 double for 'Tarf.

Tommy Bowe has questioned the decision of a parent to bring their child to a tennis match after the child in question disrupted the players by crying. Bowe told actor Gerard Jordan, who was appearing on the show, that he wouldn't have brought his children to such an event, and in an imagined scenario where a babysitter fell through at the last minute, the ex-rugby star claimed that in that situation he would have simply stayed at home with the children. "As a parent, I would know that it would be too stressful for me to take my child in there to be put in that situation. So I'd decide, no, I don't think it's worth upsetting the other people who are watching it and me being put under the stress of doing it. I'll watch it on the telly," said Bowe. Tommy Bowe Like Raducanu, Bowe has come in for some criticism for his comments, with one social media user saying "Disappointed in these comments. No compassion for that mom. Gerard Jordan is just trying to inspire people to put themselves in someone else's shoes for two seconds but y'all can't even do that." Others have defended Bowe, and have suggested that in a sporting event like tennis where the crowd remains mostly silent, perhaps a young child isn't suited to such an environment. As for the match itself, Sabalenka won in three sets as she continues to build momentum ahead of next month's US Open, where Raducanu will team with Carlos Alcaraz in mixed doubles action.

Sharlene Mawdsley and GAA star boyfriend take big step in relationship
Sharlene Mawdsley appears to be primed to take a huge step in her relationship with her boyfriend, Tipperary hurling hero Mikey Breen. Sharlene and Mikey went public with their relationship earlier this summer, with the Olympian spotted at Croke Park cheering defender Breen on during the Premier County's run to the Liam MacCarthy Cup. Mawdsley and Breen confirmed their relationship this summer, and the pair appeared on stage at Tipperary's Semple Stadium homecoming following Tipp's All-Ireland win over Cork. Sprinter Mawdsley was even spotted racing some Tipperary fans after a long night of celebrations following the win, and needless to say the Newport AC star cruised to victory. It has been a difficult year for Mawdsley since starring at the Paris Olympics with Team Ireland. The 27-year-old had to deal with an injury hit start to the year, while she also suffered in her personal life as her father, Thomas, passed away at the beginning of June. The relay specialist returned to the track later in the summer and recently picked up a National 200m title as she pipped Sarah Lavin and Lauren Roy in an epic race at Morton Stadium earlier this month.

Aoife Wafer still absent as Ireland go through paces for Japan World Cup opener
Ireland held their first full training session just outside Northampton today but injured back row Aoife Wafer did not take part. The 22-year-old flanker underwent knee surgery just over a month ago and has all but been ruled out of Ireland's opening two World Cup games, against Japan on Sunday and Spain on Sunday week. There are indications that the Wexford woman, the 2025 Six Nations player of the tournament, may return for the third Pool C game against New Zealand on 7 September. Co-captain Edel McMahon, who missed the two friendly games against Scotland and Canada with a knee injury, trained with the squad at Towcestrians Rugby Club but the back row warmed up separately. Ireland trained just outside Northampton, with Aoife Wafer not among the group.
