WVU inside WRs coach Logan Bradley brings adopted hard edge to small room

Dominion Post18 hours ago
MORGANTOWN — Liberty football was favored by 30-plus points against Louisiana-Monroe in 2021, and deservingly so. The Flames had Heisman Trophy hopeful and projected first-round pick Malik Willis at quarterback and former Power Four coach Hugh Freeze.
Current West Virginia inside wide receivers coach, Logan Bradley, was standing on the Liberty sideline, and across the field was Rich Rodriguez, who was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
The underdog Warhawks offense hung a 28-burger in the third quarter, leading to a big upset for ULM, 31-28.
Bradley was shocked.
'What's the saying?' Bradley said. 'You can't beat them, join them. We were favored by all these points. ULM beat us. We were favored by 30-something points. Man, something up with them. Why are they out playing us? There's no way they should have.' Logan Bradley
Bradley called up current WVU wide receivers coach Ryan Garrett, who was a ULM graduate assistant. The two worked together at Ole Miss for a couple of years prior. Bradley was in disbelief and wanted to know how that just happened.
'We just had this mindset, that we were just going to out-physical, y'all,' Garrett said. 'Play harder than y'all, and we did.'
Bradley always wondered what Rodriguez's secrets were, so when he received the opportunity to join Rodriguez's staff, coaching inside receivers, as a late spring addition, he couldn't pass it up.
'I've always wanted to since,' Bradley said about coaching for Rodriguez.
Bradley hasn't been at WVU long, but has already started adopting Rodriguez's hard edge that he admired from afar, and instilling it in his small group of inside receivers.
'All you guys gotta look in here and find out what hard edge means to you,' Bradley said to his receivers. 'To me, hard edge is no matter the situation, circumstance, we don't fold. We play our standard.'
When Garrett spoke earlier this camp, he said most of the inside and outside receivers were mixing, figuring out who should play where, but Bradley provided an insight into who his core players were. Bradley listed junior Rodney Gallagher III, Jacksonville State transfer Jarod Bowie, and Eastern Michigan transfer Oran Singleton Jr., or ManMan, as Bradley called him.
'The moment I got here, everyone was calling him ManMan,' Bradley said. 'It's just been ManMan. The whole team calls him that.'
Gallagher highlights the small room. He was a four-star prospect and the third-best player in Pennsylvania in 2023, picking the Mountaineers over multiple Power Four schools, most notably Penn State.
Gallagher hasn't lived up to his potential, only scoring three touchdowns in two seasons. Part of it could've been the scheme, and Bradley thinks Gallagher, whom he calls 'consistent Rod,' really fits into Rodriguez's offense because he can think quickly, which is important in a tempo offense.
'He does that,' Bradley said. 'Coach Rod wants someone who has a hard edge to them, and wants to be coached hard, and that's [Gallagher]… We live by the next play is the most important play. He has that mindset. He understands that, so in this offense it fits him well.'
Bradley said Gallagher's strengths are his ability to flush mistakes and putting his foot in the ground to get up for the contested catches, even with his smaller 5-foot-10 height.
He also provided some insights to his other two slot receivers.
'ManMan, his route running is special,' Bradley said. 'When he's on, he's on. At any moment, he can make a route look special. I like to tell him it's coaching, but I tell him all the time there's something in that Florida water… [Bowie] does a great job of getting upfield immediately, putting his foot in the ground and getting upfield, and no dancing. At any point, he can turn a bubble into a 12-yard route, getting you a first down.'
His receivers are still messing up here and there, which is what camp is for. Bradley's even messed up, and Rodriguez got on his case. Bradley wasn't phased, though, and was happy that Rodriguez is the type of coach who just says his piece and moves on, as long as it's fixed the next time. Despite the mistakes, Bradley is happy with what he's seen with his group.
'All three of them are very talented,' Bradley said. 'I've been impressed with all those guys since the moment I got here in the spring. All three of them, I believe, have the ability when they get the ball in their hands to make a play. They are good as gold. You can't ask for a better group. They push each other. They can make a play at any point in the game.'

Should Keegan Bradley be a playing captain at the Ryder Cup? This writer says no

Golf might be trying to tell Keegan Bradley something. Before Justin Rose and J.J. Spaun went to a sudden-death playoff Aug. 10 in an exciting finale to the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind, Bradley had long since signed his scorecard. Bradley was never in the mix in Memphis. He opened 72-70 and finished at 2-under-par, which tied for 44nd. Not terrible, but in a field of the sport's 69 best players, he was average. He's been average since June 22, when he won a thrilling Travelers Championship on the final hole. The victory amplified speculation that Bradley, already confirmed as this year's U.S. Ryder Cup captain, might use one of the six captain's picks on himself when finalizing the 12-man team that'll face Team Europe at Bethpage Black on Sept. 26-28. It's a uniquely fascinating decision, and it's still out there for Bradley to soon make. As of an Aug. 3 update, he was No. 10 in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings, and he was No. 10 in the World Golf Rankings. He can easily claim to be one of the top 12 American golfers in the world. Were he not already on board to manage this Ryder Cup team, he'd likely get picked by someone else to play on it. Bradley could play anyway. He could also remain the captain. But he shouldn't be allowed to do both. Why would the U.S. team willingly put itself at a clear — and wholly avoidable — disadvantage by having one person take on both managerial and playing roles? Bradley may be confident that he could handle both, but there's no reason the PGA of America should want him, or anyone else, to try. Playing captains were a thing of Ryder Cups past, but there's good reason you haven't seen one since Arnold Palmer in 1963. The pressure of playing in a Ryder Cup in 2025 is more than enough without having to also pick teams and lineups and keep everyone happy in a locker room of tempestuous, millionaire golfers who are unaccustomed to team competition. Easy as it has been for older golfers on both sides to want to step up and play captain, it has proven very difficult to do this job well. One of Bradley's assistants, Jim Furyk, did it well in captaining the U.S. to a Presidents Cup victory last year in Canada. Furyk could seamlessly take over at Bethpage if Bradley wants to play. And if not Furyk, Nashville's Brandt Snedeker would be another convenient choice. Snedeker, an assistant for this Ryder Cup, is set to captain the 2026 Presidents Cup team. Either would be preferable to someone taking this on while playing. Doing both would court disaster for the U.S. team, and the Euros know it. In July, The Telegraph (England) reported that European captain Luke Donald gave a thumbs-up to a rule change, requested by Bradley, that would allow one of the U.S. team's assistants to act as captain on the golf course if Bradley is playing. Of course, Donald agreed. I'd imagine he did so joyfully. If I were leading the European team, I'd love the idea of Bradley foolishly embracing the burden of both roles. This is an enormous Ryder Cup for the U.S. team. The Americans went to Italy in 2023, and Donald's European team outplayed them thoroughly. In the past couple of years, the European side has grown stronger on paper. Welcoming Donald back as captain was a good idea, too, and there's reason to think the U.S. is about to have its hands full at Bethpage. Bradley was an unorthodox choice for U.S. captain because he's only 39 and still playing well. The decision probably had to do with paying him back for being famously snubbed by 2023 captain Zach Johnson, an emotional development that was documented by the Netflix golf series 'Full Swing.' Bradley told reporters at his introductory news conference accepting the captaincy that he would play only if he was an automatic top-six qualifier. He won't (quite) get to the top six, but he's close enough to where he has been encouraged to perhaps go back on that initial plan.w This recent dip in form could be enough to sway him and do what's best for everyone by serving as full-time U.S. captain and picking six other golfers. Here's hoping that's the case. OK. So who should Bradley pick for U.S. Ryder Cup team? Glad you asked. Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa, major winners and Ryder Cup veterans, were No. 7 and No. 8 in the team standings as of Aug. 3. They are easy inclusions. Ben Griffin (No. 9) missed back-to-back cuts in July, but one of those was against cartoonishly low scores at the John Deere Classic and the other was overseas at The Open Championship. Prior to July, Griffin had finished T-14 or better in six consecutive tournaments, including the PGA (T-8) and U.S. Open (T-10). It's easy to pick a guy who has been playing that well. Patrick Cantlay has proven repeatedly that he's a stone-cold killer in the Ryder Cup. I don't care where he's ranked (No. 14). He'd be on my team. And I'll point out that Cameron Young (No. 15), who is making a strong late push, reached the finals of the defunct World Golf match-play event in 2023, beating Rory McIlroy in the semis to get there. Who beat Young 6 and 5 in that final? Sam Burns (No. 16). Burns and Young each rank among the PGA Tour's best in Strokes Gained: Putting. Nothing matters more in match play than putting. Those two would round out my six. Gentry Estes is the sports columnist for the Nashville Tennessean, part of the USA Today Network. He can be reached at gestes@ and hang out with him on Bluesky @

Jaguars are taking a cautious approach with 2-way star Travis Hunter in preseason game at the Saints

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars plan to be cautious with two-way star Travis Hunter in their preseason game at New Orleans on Sunday. Although coach Liam Coen said Saturday that starters would play against the Saints, the Jaguars declined to commit to getting Hunter on the field after he sustained an upper-body injury during a scrimmage Thursday. Hunter is expected to go through pregame warmups inside the Superdome before the team determines his playing status. The Heisman Trophy winner was held out of a walk-through Friday as a precaution. He was on the field for the hourlong session and carried a play-calling sheet while following the action closely. Hunter played on offense and defense, totaling 18 snaps, in Jacksonville's preseason opener against Pittsburgh last Saturday. He also played both ways during a sloppy scrimmage five days later before crashing hard to the ground while defending a deep pass late. The scrimmage included 10 penalty flags, at least seven dropped passes, an interception and a few more balls that nearly got picked. It was the kind of performance that surely factored into Coen's decision to get his starters — including quarterback Trevor Lawrence — back on the field against the Saints. 'That's fatigue,' Coen said. 'That's lack of concentration when you're getting fatigued and tired. Every time we come out, they go hard.' Hunter was one of 10 players held out of practice this week because of injuries, joining right guard Chuma Edoga, right tackle Anton Harrison, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, defensive lineman Maason Smith, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, safety Caleb Ransaw, linebacker Jalen McLeod and cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Montaric Brown. ___

Where LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier's 2024 QBR ranks among returning SEC quarterbacks

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier takes the reins of the Tigers' offense for the second-straight season heading into 2025. It's expected to be a strong year for quarterbacks in the SEC and Nussmeier is one of several returners with real experience. He stands out in one key statistic. Nussmeier's quarterback rating (QBR) from 2024 is the highest of any returning quarterback in the conference. Nussmeier's 2024 QBR of 79.0 finished fourth among SEC quarterbacks. He finished behind a top three of Ole Miss' Jaxon Dart (84.7), Alabama's Jalen Milroe (82.8) and Georgia's Carson Beck (80.9). Dart, Milroe, and Beck have all moved on. Dart and Milroe are in the NFL, and Beck is at Miami. That leaves Nussmeier as the top returner. The statistic encompasses a wide range of factors, including rushing yards, fumbles, downs, and distance, to measure a quarterback's success. Nussmeier led a strong offensive unit with top targets Kyren Lacy and Mason Taylor, but fell behind on the list due to his lack of rushing prowess. QBR is a fairly predictive stat and Nussmeier's ranking could spell big things for 2025. Ahead of his fifth season at LSU, Nussmeier is touted as one of the best passers in the country. Per BetMGM, he has the second-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy at +900, trailing only Texas quarterback Arch Manning (+600).
