3rd Ramadhan chess challenge concludes
The Third Ramadhan Chess Challenge, organised by Al Kamil W'al Wafi Club, concluded at the club's Al Nujoom Hall under the auspices of Dr Abdulaziz al Hashimi, a member of the Majlis Ash'shura representing the Wilayat of Al Kamil W'al Wafi. The event was also attended by Dr Abdulmohsin al Marhoobi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al Kamil W'al Wafi Club.
The tournament witnessed significant participation, with over 50 players from the Wilayat of Al Kamil W'al Wafi competing across different age categories. The participants were divided into two groups: the first category for players under 16 years old and the second for those above 16 years old. The matches were characterised by intense competition among the players.
The tournament was conducted following the Swiss system with seven rounds, allowing each player 15 minutes per match. This format enabled participants to showcase their strategic and tactical planning skills. The rounds were filled with excitement and competitiveness, with several players delivering outstanding performances.
In the under 16 category, Al Yazen al Rasbi secured the championship title after demonstrating exceptional skills and consistency throughout the tournament. Salim al Rasbi claimed second place, showcasing a strong performance and tactical prowess. Meanwhile, Mohammed bin Yousuf al Rasbi earned third place after a fierce battle for the podium.
In the over 16 category, Omar al Alawi was crowned champion after an outstanding display of strategic play and resilience. Badr al Rasbi secured second place, showing remarkable composure and precision in his matches. Al Hassan al Rasbi claimed third place, proving his capability and determination despite facing tough competition.
Said al Rasbi, the organiser of the Ramadhan Chess Challenge, expressed his satisfaction with the level of participation in the tournament's third edition. He emphasised that this year's event saw a notable increase in the number of participants compared to previous editions. He attributed this growth to the active role of the media and organisers in promoting the tournament. Al Rasbi also highlighted the positive community engagement and continuous support for such events, which significantly contribute to their success. He further revealed plans to expand participation in future editions and enhance the tournament's level to reach greater heights.
Abdullah al Mashaykhi, another organiser of the tournament, noted that the level of competition varied across the two age categories. Some players showcased impressive skills, indicating promising potential. He remarked that the overall performance was highly encouraging, opening opportunities for these players to participate in external tournaments and represent the Wilayat in regional competitions.
Regarding future chess tournaments, Al Mashaykhi stated that there are plans to expand the scope of competitions by organising open tournaments and school championships throughout the year. The goal is to attract more young players and promote chess culture within the community.
To encourage more youth to engage in chess, he emphasised the importance of organising more tournaments, workshops and training courses, providing players with opportunities to refine their skills and improve their technical level.
However, Al Mashaykhi acknowledged that the organising committee faces challenges in securing the necessary support from the Oman Chess Committee, private sector institutions within the Wilayat and sports clubs. He expressed hope that upcoming tournaments would receive greater support from these entities, whether through providing high-quality chessboards or offering financial and logistical backing. He stressed that such support is crucial for sustaining and developing these events and advancing chess as a competitive sport in the Sultanate of Oman.

MUSCAT, AUGUST 2 Masirah Club Team (A) was crowned champion of the General Chess Clubs Championship after successfully overturning the overall standings in the final rounds, snatching the lead from Salalah Club (A), which had topped the table midway through the competition. Masirah managed to collect 29 points, placing them at the summit of the standings, while Salalah (A) settled for second place. The championship, organised by the Oman Chess Committee, lasted eight days and concluded at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex Hall in Bausher. The tournament, played under the Swiss system of nine rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30 second increment per move, was filled with excitement and challenges among 100 male and female players representing 20 teams from 13 clubs. Masirah (A) sealed the title in the final round, while Nakhal Club delivered a major surprise by taking third place, surpassing teams that had been in the lead. At the awarding ceremony, Ahmed bin Darwish al Balushi, Chairman of the Oman Chess Committee, honoured the winning clubs. Masirah (A) received the gold medal, the championship cup, and a cash prize after scoring 29 points. Salalah (A) took the silver medal and a cash prize with 25 points, while Nakhal (A) finished third with the bronze medal and a cash prize, scoring 22.5 points on tiebreak. Masirah (B) placed fourth, while Salalah (B) came fifth. Ahmed al Balushi expressed his satisfaction with the technical level of the tournament, saying "throughout the championship days, we witnessed a high level of competition that reflects the significant development of the game within the Sultanate of Oman. What distinguishes this edition is the balance of power among the clubs, as positions changed right up to the final round. This is clear evidence of the closeness in technical levels." He added "the committee is working under a clear strategy to develop the game. Through these tournaments, we aim to discover talents and refine them through competition and exposure, in preparation for integrating outstanding players into the national team to represent the Sultanate of Oman in international championships. Our goal is to see Omani players achieve international titles and enhance the Sultanate of Oman's global standing in chess." He concluded by saying "we thank all clubs and players for their commitment and sportsmanship, and we also appreciate the support of partner entities that contributed to the championship's success. We look forward to future tournaments with higher levels of performance and wider participation." The Oman Chess Committee affirmed that the championship aims to create a truly competitive environment among clubs and measure players' technical levels, noting that these competitions, over their past editions, have contributed to developing players' abilities, particularly in the general category, which has been reflected in achieving advanced results in international rankings.

Forest sign winger Ndoye from Bologna
LONDON: Nottingham Forest have signed Swiss winger Dan Ndoye from Serie A side Bologna on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said on Thursday. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed by either club but British media reported Forest paid a fee of around 34 million pounds ($45 million) for the 24-year old Switzerland international. Ndoye joined Bologna in August 2023 from Swiss side Basel for around 10 million euros ($11 million). He made 41 appearances for Bologna across all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and registering six assists. He scored the winning goal against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final, helping Bologna secure their first major trophy in 51 years. MUSCAT, JULY 29 The Clubs Chess Championship for the Open category, organised by the Oman Chess Committee from July 24 to 31 at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, has witnessed an atmosphere of excitement and fierce competition among 20 teams representing 13 clubs from various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, with the participation of 100 male and female players of different ages and skill levels. The championship is being played under the Swiss system over nine rounds, with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, making each match a true test of the players' mental abilities and tactical strategies. From the very first round, the matches have reflected the strong technical preparation of the players and the overall development of the participating clubs' standards.
