Delhi HC issues notice to police on plea of Jamia violence accused Asif Iqbal
The case stems from 2019-2020 protests at Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh following passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Parliament on December 11, 2019.
On March 7, additional sessions judge Vishal Singh, presiding over the case at Saket court, had framed charges under various provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 109 (abetment of an offence), Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), sections 143, 147, 148, 149 (unlawful assembly and rioting), sections 186, 353, 332, 333, 308, 427, 435, 323, 341 (various charges related to assault, obstruction of public servants, grievous hurt, and damage to property) and sections 3/4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
The judge had observed that Aasif was named in the FIR as one of the persons who was present at the spot of violence and was leading the mob, which was also confirmed through the CDR and location of his mobile number.
Besides Tanha, the trial court had also charged former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Sharjeel Imam, observing that he was not only an instigator but also one of the 'kingpins' of the larger conspiracy to incite violence during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests in Delhi in 2019.
On Monday, justice Sanjeev Narula sought Delhi police's response and fixed October 30 as the next date of hearing, along with Shajreel's petition against the same order.
In his petition, argued by advocate Siddharth Satija, Tanha argued that the order was passed without any due application of mind and appreciation of evidence on record.
Besides the 2019 Jamia violence case, Tanha is also an accused in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case. The Delhi high court in 2021 granted bail to Tanha along with Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita in the conspiracy case, on the grounds of delay in trial.

Six get life term in teacher murder case
Buxar: Six people were sentenced to life imprisonment on Saturday in connection with the 2019 murder of a govt school teacher in Bhikhapur village under the Itadhi police station area in Buxar district. The judgment was delivered by the court of principal district and additional sessions judge-IV, Anupam Kumari, after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence and examining witness testimonies. Monetary penalties were also imposed. According to additional public prosecutors Rajendra Prasad and Kripa Rai, the incident occurred on the morning of July 19, 2019. Satyendra was on his way to collect milk when he was attacked near a peepal tree by Radheshyam Giri, Shivdani Giri, Jaiprakash Singh and Banarasi Giri. Shortly afterwards, Prince Giri and Gunjan Giri arrived on a motorcycle and fatally shot him in the head. The deceased's father lodged an FIR naming all six accused — Jaiprakash Singh, Radheshyam Giri, Shivdani Giri, Gunjan Giri, Prince Giri and Banarasi Giri — and claimed the motive for the murder was a land dispute. The prosecution produced 10 witnesses to support its case. Based on the evidence and testimonies, the court found all six accused guilty. Radheshyam Giri, Shivdani Giri, Jaiprakash Singh, and Banarasi Giri were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000 each under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. They were also sentenced to two years' imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000 each under Section 148 IPC for rioting. Prince Giri and Gunjan Giri, who were identified as the shooters, were also sentenced to life imprisonment. In addition, they received three years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 each under Section 148. Illegal mining: Ed attaches assets worth over 17.5 cr
1 2 Chandigarh: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has provisionally attached immovable assets worth Rs 17.68 crore in a case related to alleged illegal mining carried out in the Dadam hill area of Tosham village in Bhiwani district by M/s Goverdhan Mines and Minerals, M/s Sunder Marketing Associate, Vedpal Singh Tanwar, Raman Sokhal, and others under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The entire operation was carried out last week, an ED official informed on Saturday. The ED had initiated an investigation into the case following a prosecution complaint filed by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) under the Environment Protection Act, 1986. Subsequently, the Haryana Police also registered an FIR under various sections of the IPC against M/s Goverdhan Mines and Minerals (GMM), M/s Sunder Marketing Associates (SMA), and its partners, including Vedpal Singh Tanwar, Raman Shokhal, and others. The ED investigation revealed that M/s Goverdhan Mines and Minerals and M/s Sunder Marketing Associates undertook mining activities at Dadam mines, Bhiwani, from 2017 to 2022, wherein they were involved in illegal and unscientific mining to the tune of more than Rs 1,200 crore, causing a loss to the govt exchequer and corresponding gains to themselves. The investigation further revealed that the proceeds of crime acquired by Goverdhan Mines and Minerals through illegal and unscientific mining were used to acquire movable and immovable properties. During the investigation, assets of the accused worth Rs 56.97 crore were attached provisionally via an order dated Sept 27, 2024, and a criminal prosecution complaint was filed before the Special Court under the PMLA, said the ED official. During further investigation, efforts were made to trace and attach the balance proceeds of crime, said the official, adding that assets worth Rs 17.68 crore were attached via an order dated July 28. Thus, proceeds of crime worth Rs 74.65 crore have been attached so far in the matter. The official further said the probe against M/s Sunder Marketing Associates and its owners – Raman Shokhal and others – was in progress and assets of the accused worth Rs 25.16 crore had been attached so far. PM Modi underlines ‘economic priorities', gives call for Swadeshi push after Trump's ‘dead economy' jibe
Days after US President Donald Trump labelled India a 'dead economy,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the country must remain alert to its 'own economic priorities' amid the instability and uncertainty facing the world economy. He urged Indians to stand firm on economic nationalism and self-reliance. Speaking at a public rally in Varanasi's Banauli village, Modi underscored that India is on track to become the world's third-largest economy amid growing international uncertainty. 'In such times, countries are focusing solely on their own interests. India, too, must remain alert to its own economic priorities,' Modi said, invoking a renewed push for Swadeshi. 'At a time when the world is going through uncertainty, let us take a pledge to sell only Swadeshi goods from our shops and markets. Promoting made in India goods will be the truest service to the country.' The remarks come days after Trump announced a 25 per cent import tariff on Indian goods, effective August 7, and warned of further penalties for India's ongoing purchase of Russian crude oil and military equipment. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: 'They (Russia and India) can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.' After Trump's statement, India's response was measured. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal told Parliament on Thursday that India remains the world's fastest-growing major economy and is widely expected to emerge as the third-largest globally in the near future. In his speech Saturday, Modi framed the global economic instability as a moment of opportunity for India. 'The feeling of Swadeshi in every action will define our future,' he said. 'This will also be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Only through collective effort can we fulfil the dream of a developed India.' He urged citizens to become conscious consumers and adopt the 'Vocal for Local' mantra. 'Whatever we buy, we should ask ourselves – has an Indian toiled to make this? If it has been made by the sweat of our people, with their skills, that product is Swadeshi for us.' The prime minister also called on all political parties to unite behind the goal of national economic advancement. 'If we want India to become the third-largest economy, every political party and every leader, keeping aside their hesitations, must work in the nation's interest and awaken the spirit of Swadeshi among the people,' he said.
