Sharjah discovers 3 new plant species for the first time in UAE
The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah said that the newly recorded species include Dactyloctenium australe (Durban Crowfoot Grass), a notable addition to the UAE's wild flora, along with two new varieties of Neurada procumbens, namely Neurada procumbens var. stellata and Neurada procumbens var. al-eisawii.
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah, emphasised that the discovery of three new recorded plant species for the first time in the UAE is a testament to the EPAA's unwavering commitment to scientific research and biodiversity conservation.
She added that this discovery is the result of meticulous scientific exploration using advanced and innovative research techniques. The field team conducts regular expeditions to explore, collect, analyse, and document wild plant species and seed samples, reinforcing national efforts to protect biodiversity and address environmental challenges.
Al Suwaidi also pointed out that these newly recorded plant species, distinguished by their unique characteristics, open new avenues for future scientific studies on their ecological role within desert environments.
She expressed her appreciation for the dedication of the Sharjah Seed Bank and Herbarium team. "Their ongoing efforts to explore the local environment not only expand our scientific knowledge of native plant species but also enhance research collaboration at both local and international levels. Through their work, we continue to document rare and previously unrecorded wild plants, contributing to global botanical research."
The Sharjah Seed Bank and Herbarium, launched in 2018 in Al Dhaid, is a pioneering initiative aimed at preserving rare wild and desert plant species in the UAE. The Seed Bank plays a crucial role in developing a comprehensive database on plant biodiversity, contributing to the discovery and documentation of new plant species in the UAE for the first time.
Furthermore, the initiative actively publishes scientific research in international journals, playing a vital role in updating the Arabian Peninsula's plant registry and the Red List of endangered plant species. Through its work, the Sharjah Seed Bank and Herbarium continues to strengthen national efforts in preserving the UAE's natural resources and fostering sustainable environmental conservation.

With his rare combination of scholarly depth and institutional leadership, he is well placed to help drive AUS' goal of building a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment forward. Dr. Salah Brahimi (second from left in the photo) joined the AUS executive team as the university's first Vice Chancellor for External Relations. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles across academia, industry and global development. A former World Bank executive and current CEO of Grey Matter LLC in Washington, DC, Dr. Brahimi has led innovation portfolios across multiple sectors and advised governments and institutions around the world. His appointment reflects AUS' growing emphasis on cultivating outward-facing partnerships, including international collaboration, strategic communications and institutional advancement. On the administrative side, Dr. Jihad Mohaidat (far right in the photo) has been appointed as Registrar. He brings deep expertise in leveraging technology to advance institutional systems, and has served in senior roles at the Higher Colleges of Technology and the National Center for Innovation in Jordan. At AUS, he will play an important role in strengthening operational systems and enriching the student experience through technology-driven innovation. It specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of all types of cancer, with a highly experienced medical team and a dedicated department for paediatric and adolescent care. The hospital serves more than 50,000 patients annually and works in close collaboration with its academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research, London, cementing its position as a global leader in cancer treatment innovation. Recent advancements enhancing cancer care Recent advancements at the CMP are enhancing cancer care and were reflected in a comprehensive report. The 'Marsden360' service, developed in partnership with Guardant Health, uses liquid biopsy (a blood test for cancer) to identify the genetic changes in DNA, allowing patients to be matched to targeted treatments. The testing was offered as part of an NHS England national study for patients with suspected late-stage lung cancer, as well as providing a commissioned NHS ctDNA service to guide treatment decisions for eligible patients with suspected late-stage breast cancer. The report also noted the Sharjah Clinical Genomics Laboratory is on track to become the first facility in the UK to offer fully automated genomic testing, with the capacity to conduct 5000 tests monthly. This is being achieved through collaboration with Automata, a global biotech company providing robotic automation solutions to the life sciences industry. The advancement has improved early detection of genetic mutations and enabled proactive care for high-risk cancer patients. Cutting-edge technology includes the Nanopore PromethION device for precise long-read DNA sequencing, already analyzing 110 whole genomes to yield new insights for treatment development. The CMP also plays a vital role in key clinical trials like 'ENABLE-NGS', 'PREVAIL', and 'ICED' (targeting leukemia, lung, and rare cancers), 'SIGNIFIED' (offering annual scans for Li-Fraumeni Syndrome), 'INOVATE' (blood-based monitoring for head/neck cancers), and 'RECUT Plus' (studying radiotherapy resistance). Further amplifying its impact, the lab contributed to over 24 peer-reviewed studies in 2024, presented at major conferences like ESMO and ASCO, exploring molecular profiling to redefine cancer risk and reshape treatment strategies. UAE harnesses AI to boost Arabic language global reach
ABU DHABI - The UAE has set a model in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to integrate the Arabic language and its cultural heritage into the digital sphere, boosting its regional and global presence as a language capable of meeting future demands. Various state institutions are rolling out AI-driven initiatives in sectors such as publishing, education, lexicography and creative content. One of the leading projects is the Historical Dictionary of Arabic Language, a monumental scientific achievement completed last year by Sharjah, the "Capital of Arab Culture". The project documents the evolution of the Arabic language throughout history. This was followed by the launch of the 'GPT Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language' project, which utilises modern innovations to serve and disseminate the language globally. Linked to AI, the dictionary offers researchers and enthusiasts with over 20 million Arabic words. It also enables them to write and read texts, convert them into videos, and continuously feed the dictionary with new information through a collaboration between the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah and the Emirates Scholar Research Centre. Meanwhile, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation is advancing digital culture and knowledge in the Arab world and globally through initiatives including the 'Digital Knowledge Hub,' an Arabic platform for producing, collecting and organising digital content. Last year, it surpassed 800,000 titles and 8.5 million digital items across more than 18 specialised libraries. The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, part of the Department of Culture and Tourism, has launched several AI-based publishing projects, including a specialised digital dictionary to support digital Arabic content. It is the first comprehensive Arabic-English dictionary employing AI and computational linguistics. The dictionary covers over 7,000 core modern terms, offering automated pronunciation, simplified definitions, examples, images, and precise grammatical and semantic classifications. In collaboration with a team from New York University Abu Dhabi and Zayed University, the centre launched the Balanced Arabic Readability Corpus project 'BAREC', which aims to collect a linguistic corpus of 10 million words encompassing a wide range of literary genres and topics. The most recent edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair saw the launch of the "Digital Square" initiative, a technical space that provided a platform to enhance the use of AI in publishing and books. Furthermore, many educational institutions have been keen to launch diverse initiatives to promote the use of AI and modern technologies in teaching the Arabic language.
