Toronto FC defender Nicksoen Gomis out for the season after Achilles surgery
Gomis went under the knife Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Frenchman had to be helped off the field Saturday. He was unable to put weight on his left leg after going down in the 63rd minute in the Toronto penalty box with a non-contact injury in the 2-0 loss to the visiting New England Revolution.
'It's a big loss for us,' said coach Robin Fraser. 'He does so many things well. And as a young centre back, he's only going to get better.

'I would say with the way medicine is these days, I have zero worries for his future,' he added. 'We will obviously just miss him now.'
Toronto (1-6-4) continues its search for a first home win of the season when D.C. United (3-5-3) visits Saturday.
Gomis joins an injury list that includes captain Jonathan Osorio, defender Richie Laryea, midfielder Markus Cimermancic and forward Deandre Kerr.
'We obviously are still missing a few guys but it feels a lot better at the moment than it has for probably a couple of weeks,' sad Fraser.
Defender Zane Monlouis, midfielder/forward Derrick Etienne Jr. and backup goalkeeper Luka Gavran are all available again. Defender Henry Wingo, meanwhile, appears to be getting closer to a return.
Veteran defender Kevin Long, who sat out Saturday's loss to New England, is also ready — good news with D.C. United star striker Christian Benteke coming to town.

The six-foot-three Belgian is perhaps the most dangerous aerial threat in Major League Soccer.
'Benteke is just a beast in the (penalty) box,' said Fraser, a former two-time MLS Defender of the Year.
After going unbeaten in its first four games (1-0-3) of the season, which included a 2-2 draw with visiting Toronto in the season opener, D.C. lost four straight during which it was outscored 14-2. But the team seems to have found its footing of late, winning three of its last four (3-1-0) in all competitions.
D.C. United goes into weekend play in 12th place in the Eastern Conference, two places and five points ahead of Toronto. The club is coming off a 2-0 win over the Charleston Battery in U.S. Open Cup action Tuesday.
'It feels good,' said former Toronto midfielder Brandon Servania. 'Obviously there's momentum behind us, three out of four.'
Benteke, the reigning MLS Golden Boot winner, leads the D.C. attack.
Benteke's 23 goals last season accounted for 44.23 per cent of his club's goals in 2024 in tying Raúl Díaz Arce's franchise single-season goals record. Benteke has six goals this season upping his career MLS total to 44 in 78 games.

The 34-year-old needs just one goal to tie Christian Gomez (45 goals in 124 matches) for the second most in club history. Jamie Moreno had the franchise record, scoring 131 of his 133 career goals across 329 games with the squad.
'I would say that's a massive moment because it just shows Christian's availability over the course of his time here,' said D.C. coach Troy Lesesne of Benteke. 'He's always available for us.
'When he's available he usually steps out on the field and creates chances and goals. And so he's fulfilling his responsibility to the club. What I would love to see is that coupled with on-field team success, the like of which Christian Gomez had during his time period.'
Benteke scored in last Saturday's 2-1 win over Colorado despite being listed as questionable with a quad issue before the game. Lesesne said the Belgian is ready for the weekend.
Benteke leads the league in aerial duels (86) and shots on target (22). And, no surprise, D.C. ranks second in the league in accurate crosses per match, averaging 6.0.
Defence is another issue for D.C. United, however. The club ranks last in the 30-team league, conceding 2.09 goals a game on average. In contrast, Toronto is tied for 17th (1.45).

But 10 of D.C.'s league-worst 23 goals allowed came from two losses — 4-1 at Orlando on March 22 and 6-1 at San Jose on April 6.
The D.C. defence appears to have steadied in recent weeks, having allowed just six goals in its last four league outings.
Toronto is also getting its backline together. After conceding 12 goals in its first five games, it has allowed just four in its last six matches.
But TFC has won just two of the last 17 meetings (2-5-10) with D.C United.

DeAndre Yedlin traded to Real Salt Lake by FC Cincinnati
Real Salt Lake has acquired longtime U.S. national team right back DeAndre Yedlin in a trade with FC Cincinnati. Cincinnati received $304,700 in general allocation money in the deal announced on Thursday. The 32-year-old defender is a three-time Major League Soccer All-Star. He came to Cincinnati in March 2024 in a trade with Inter Miami and played in 67 games across all competitions, with a goal and eight assists. He returned to the United States to play for Miami in 2022. Columbus, New England aim to get back on track

Neither has played well for long stretches and their postseason aspirations, while different, are becoming harder to envision. The Crew (12-5-9, 45 points) sought to win the Supporters' Shield after a 7-1-3 start that put them two points behind Vancouver for the overall lead. Since then, a 5-4-6 mark puts Columbus sixth in the Eastern Conference, two points behind Orlando City for the fourth and the final spot for home field in the first round of the playoffs with eight matches left. 'You don't want to peak too early then drop off,' Crew midfielder Max Arfsten said. 'I think the best is yet to come in terms of our team form and that's what we're searching for.' New England (7-12-7, 28 points) was 10th, one point below the playoff line, after the first weekend in May but are now 11 points back. The Revolution are 1-6-1 in the past eight matches with the win coming two matches ago in the return of U.S. men's national team goalkeeper Matt Turner for the 2-0 result over D.C. United on Aug. 9. He played seven seasons for the Revolution before leaving for Europe in 2022 and is the club's all-time leader in winning percentage (.587). 'He's a very good goalkeeper. Whitecaps re-set defensive posture as MLS transfer window closes
The Vancouver Whitecaps had an obvious need, a left-footed centre back, and now they've filled that hole. It was a need even before Ranko Veselinović's season was ended last month by an ACL tear. Jesper Sorensen has really been wanting to play three at the back more, and now he can set his lineup more easily to do so. And now the Caps have signed two new centre backs and said sayonara to another. In are Joderick Pupe, a Belgian, and Sebastian Schonlau, a German. On his way back to Norway is Bjorn Inge Utvik. Schonlau is signed through 2026 with a club option for 2027, while Pupe is under contract through 2027 with a club option for 2028. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. It's never easy stepping into a squad that is already at midseason when you're just ramping up your year, as both Pupe and Schonlau will have to do, but here we are. Schonlau arrived in Vancouver on Wednesday and took part in training on Thursday. Pupe is expected in the next day or two. Both will have to deal with the realities of jet lag, but Sorensen told Postmedia that he was also keen to get them involved. He expects Tristan Blackmon, who left last Sunday's game against Houston with a knee issue, will be ready to play on Saturday against St. Louis, but with Bjorn Inge Utvik headed back to Norway, the Caps are otherwise pretty thin at centre back. 'We have to also be clever, not doing anything stupid to start out with,' Sorensen said. 'But of course, we would like to have them in the rotation, in the squad, as fast as possible, because I really think that it's important that we go forward with the plans we have for the remains of the season.' Pupe, 28, is the younger of the two, but also crucially plays with his left foot, unlike most other players. 'He will open up the pitch with his left foot,' Sorensen said. 'He's also a good athlete, even though he's 28 and a little bit of a late bloomer.' On top of Pupe's physiology, Schonlau himself is also a fabulous passer. He was the most accurate passer in the 2. Bundesliga last season. He is usually a centre back, but he's also played as a defensive midfielder, no surprise given his ball skills. Pupe is already 31, but there's no doubt his experience as a ball-playing centre back is something that had great appeal to the Caps. Watch for more of Sorensen setting up his system with three centre backs. 'If we wanted to play with three, it would be nice to have another left-footed, so we've been looking into that for a while now,' Sorensen explained. Such a set-up will allow the team's wing backs — Edier Ocampo, Matias Laborda and Tate Johnson — to play even more aggressively up field. And if the idea is to play Thomas Müller behind two strikers, Brian White and Jayden Nelson or Emmanuel Sabbi, then Sorensen can have Sebastian Berhalter and Andres Cubas sitting in front of the defensive three, with Berhalter now also able to play more aggressively in attack. Both Pupe and Schonlau were captains of their old clubs. Pupe helped FCV Dender win promotion to Belgium's top league, while Schonlau's Hamburger SV returned to the Bundesliga this past spring. Their instinctual leadership will be essential to a quick integration into the Whitecaps' squad, the coach believes. 'What we've seen is great character,' Sorensen said of what they saw in both players. 'Both have been captains where they played. They've been competing at a good level and they're experienced players.' Thank you in Norwegian is 'takk.' Utvik was already going to be heading home this winter, the Whitecaps said. Utvik and his wife Nina welcomed a son, Mathias, in May, a baby brother for daughter Julia. Life is busy and the couple wanted to be closer to family in Norway as it is, so when the chance to sign two centre backs in this transfer window popped up, the club offered to Utvik to send him home a few months early. 'Great player, great guy, very well-respected with his teammates, with everybody in this organization,' Sorensen said of the centre back, who joined Vancouver before the 2024 season. 'Great personality. He has left his mark, both on and off the pitch. I think he's been very reliable when we played him, and he's played a lot recently, especially since Ranko was out. Great guy to work with, but this is football, and things happen fast, and I know that he was also ready to leave after the season because he wanted to get back home with his family.' pjohnston@
