TVS investments in loss-making UK arm Norton spark analyst concerns

Mint29-04-2025
TVS Motor Company Ltd's investments into its loss-making United Kingdom-based subsidiary Norton continues to concern analysts who expect that the company is still far away from generating meaningful revenue.
India's third-largest two-wheeler seller's management highlighted during the post-Q4 results earnings call on Monday that the company will focus on developing new product range for Norton, which is expected to hit the markets by the end of the current fiscal year.
At least two brokerage firms highlighted that the investments into the subsidiary are weighing on the overall performance of TVS, while a third analyst noted that meaningful revenue from Norton will only come in the second half of financial year 2027.
'Capital allocation remains a concern. TVS has heavily invested in foreign subsidiaries. Over the last five years, these investments have grown at ~25% CAGR,' analysts at Nirmal Bang wrote in a 29 April note.
'On a cumulative basis, these subsidiaries have been making losses with the bulk of the losses booked in Norton and SEMG.'
Norton was acquired by the Hosur-based company in 2020 in an all-cash deal for ₹ 153 crore. Since taking over the motorcycle brand, TVS has invested more than ₹ 1,000 crore into the company. In 2021, it opened a new plant in Solihuli, UK, with a capacity to produce around 8,000 motorcycles annually.
Through these investments, TVS wanted to create products for the global market through the Norton brand. However, losses have piled up. Ebit (earnings before interest and taxes) losses from subsidiaries, which includes Norton but excludes TVS Credit, stood at ₹ 140 crore in 4QFY25 versus ₹ 91 crore in 4QFY24, according to a 29 April note released by Kotak Institutional Equities.
TVS did not respond to Mint's emailed queries.
Analysts at Kotak Institutional Equities also noted that free cash flow generation of the company, or the cash generated by its business, saw a sharp decline of 83% to reach ₹ 230 crore due to capital expenditure and investments nearly doubling to about ₹ 4,000 crore in financial year 2025.
'Increased losses from subsidiaries (excluding TVS Credit) need to be monitored,' Rishi Vora of Kotak noted. 'The company continues to incur losses on the Norton Motorcycle subsidiary as it continues to undertake costs of the development cost of TVS Motor.'
To be sure, this is not the first time the company is facing tough questions on the viability of its UK-based business. Faced with persistent questioning by analysts in the October 2023 earnings call, the management of the company had put up a brave face.
TVS CEO K.N. Radhakrishnan had expressed confidence in Norton's ability to generate profits earlier. "You give me a few more quarters, Norton will start delivering very good results for the company," Radhakrishnan said in October 2023.
Large share of investments is going into product development for Norton. The first new product under development is expected to hit the market by the end of this financial year.
But some believe the company is still far from generating meaningful revenue.
In a note dated 29 April, analysts at Axis Securities wrote that increased investments have muted the company's free cash flow.
'We estimate Norton's business to be able to generate meaningful revenues by H2FY27,' Shridhar Kallani of Axis Securities wrote in the note.
TVS reported its earnings on Monday, in which it beat estimates. During the January to March period, the company saw its net profit jump 76% to ₹ 852 crore, from ₹ 485 crore in the year-ago period.
Total revenue during the period grew 17% to ₹ 9,565 crore, from ₹ 8,140 crore a year ago.
For the full year, its profit grew by over 30% to reach ₹ 2,710 crore, while revenue rose 14% to ₹ 36,309 crore. During the year, it also recorded the highest-ever sale of 4.7 million units of two-wheelers in the country.
But the better-than-expected performance of the company was not able to impress investors. On Tuesday, TVS shares closed 3.4% lower as against a 0.24% fall in Nifty Auto.

Tata Motors targets cut as Q1 miss, tariffs, weak demand weigh on outlook

Analysts on Tata Motors Q1 results: Automaker Tata Motors ' June quarter (Q1FY26) performance has prompted brokerages to lower their target prices and maintain a cautious stance, citing a combination of weaker-than-expected earnings, tariff challenges at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), muted demand in key markets, and headwinds across its domestic businesses. The company's consolidated Ebitda for the quarter fell 35 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to ₹9,720 crore, missing estimates due to a steep drop in Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) profitability and pressure on the India passenger vehicle (PV) segment. JLR revenues declined 9.2 per cent to £6.6 billion, with Ebit margin shrinking to 4 per cent, as new US trade tariffs on UK- and EU-produced vehicles, along with planned Jaguar model phase-outs, hit volumes and margins. Track Stock Market LIVE Updates Brokerages weigh in Nuvama Institutional Equities flagged the sharp miss in JLR and India PV earnings, reducing its FY26E/FY27E Ebitda estimates by 6-7 per cent. 'Tata Motors' Q1FY26 Ebitda fell 35 per cent Y-o-Y to ₹9,720 crore (estimate: ₹9,970 crore) led by a 46 per cent drop in JLR due to weak volumes, US tariffs and forex losses. India PV Ebitda fell 36 per cent Y-o-Y due to lower scale, higher discounts and transition to new models,' the brokerage said. The brokerage now builds in a revenue/Ebitda CAGR of 5 per cent/4 per cent over FY25–28E, projecting muted JLR volume growth of just 1 per cent CAGR due to the discontinuation of Jaguar models, weak China/Europe sales, and persistent US tariffs. Analysts also expect subdued performance in India's commercial vehicle (CV) business – 1 per cent CAGR – on a high base, with competition from rail freight weighing on demand. 'Retain 'Reduce' with a Sep-26E TP of ₹610 (earlier Mar-26E ₹670),' the report said. On the other hand, Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL) noted that while the India CV segment delivered relatively strong performance, both JLR and India PV segments 'face severe headwinds.' It cut its target price to ₹631 from ₹668 and maintained a 'Neutral' rating. The brokerage cited 'weak demand outlook across business segments' and highlighted that JLR is grappling with tariff uncertainty for US exports, weak demand in Europe and China, and rising variable marketing expenses (VME), warranty provisions, and emission-related costs. MOFSL expects margin pressure for JLR to persist, factoring in a 150 bps Ebit margin decline over FY25–27E. Jefferies reportedly was the most bearish among the three, maintaining its 'Underperform' rating while lowering its target price to ₹550 from ₹600. It called the June quarter a 'big miss' and noted that Ebitda had fallen to a 10-quarter low. The brokerage warned of 'multiple headwinds across businesses,' particularly for JLR, which is facing increased competition and consumption tax in China, higher warranty costs, and the ongoing transition to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). It also flagged that key JLR models are 'starting to age,' potentially impacting competitiveness in the luxury segment. Tariff relief ahead, but recovery to be gradual While the recently signed UK-US trade deal – cutting tariffs on UK-produced vehicles exported to the US from 27.5 per cent to 10 per cent effective June 30, 2025 – and the EU-US deal to reduce tariffs on EU-produced vehicles to 15 per cent offer some relief, brokerages believe the benefits will only start to meaningfully reflect in the coming quarters. For now, all three brokerages expect the near-term to remain challenging for Tata Motors. JLR's transition away from legacy Jaguar models, rising input and compliance costs, and soft demand in China and Europe are expected to weigh on volumes and margins. In India, the PV segment is dealing with industry softness, model changeovers, and heightened discounting, while CV demand faces base effects and structural competition from rail transport. Despite management's optimism for a stronger second half – supported by festive season demand and the October 2025 demerger – the Street remains cautious. As Nuvama summed up, 'muted growth expectations and persistent headwinds across businesses warrant a conservative stance.'

'If Ratan Tata Was Alive': US Lawyer Slams Air India Over Delay In Ahmedabad Plane Crash Aid

Last Updated: US Attorney highlighted the late Ratan Tata's legacy of compassion, suggesting his presence could have prevented such delays in compensation faced by the grieving families. Ratan Tata's legacy of compassion,Noted US Attorney, Mike Andrews, representing over 65 families affected by the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash, slammed Air India for delay in compensation for the victims' families. He noted that if former Chairperson of the Tata Group, Ratan Tata, had been alive such 'bureaucratic process" would not have existed. Andrews spoke to ANI on Sunday and highlighted that Ratan Tata's work ethics and humbleness could have prevented such obstacles faced by the grieving families. 'Even in the US, we know who Ratan Tata was. We know a little bit in the US about his work ethic and his focus on being humble and taking care of his employees and so we know that if he were here today, we don't believe employees and victims and people who were on the aeroplane and on the ground would be subjected to a bureaucratic process in which they're delayed payment," he said. US lawyer further cited case of one of the families where a bedridden elderly woman, dependent on her son who was killed in the crash, is waiting for the compensation to meet her medical needs. 'We met with one family, the elderly mother is bedridden, and she was depending upon her son to provide income to pay for her health care. He is now deceased. They have not received payment. What are they supposed to do? They are now left at the mercy of the world in determining how she is supposed to go on when the person who was helping provide for her was killed through no fault of his own," Andrews told ANI. Over 65 families filed a petition in the US Federal Court against Air India and Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, through a United States-based law firm Beasley Allen. Mike Andrews, the aviation attorney of Beasley Allen, took up the case and visited the crash site in the Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad. On July 26, Air India released Rs 25 lakh in interim compensation payments to the families of 147 of the 229 passengers who lost their lives in the crash and 19 others who lost their lives on the ground. On June 12, Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, crashed shortly after it took off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 260 people, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
