WB govt. Staff hail court order directing State to pay 25% DA arrears
Several unions and associations of West Bengal Government employees on Friday (May 16, 2025) hailed the Supreme Court's order directing the State to pay 25% of pending dearness allowance (DA) arrears to employees.
The West Bengal Government challenged a Calcutta High Court order in May 2022 that directed payment of DA, stating that DA is not a right. The matter is now being heard before the Supreme Court.

'The Supreme Court order has recognised our demand that DA is a legally enforceable right. We have been protesting for almost 918 days now,' Bhaskar Ghosh, leader of Sangrami Joutho Manch, a collective of State Government employees' unions, told The Hindu.
Mr. Ghosh said about 12 lakh employees and pensioners will benefit. The State Government Employees' Association urged the Mamata Banerjee government not to review the order and spend taxpayers' money. The Sangrami Joutho Manch has held several protests demanding DA at par with Central Government employees.
Payment in three months
Justices Sanjay Karol and Sandeep Mehta issued an interim order directing West Bengal to make the payment within three months and posted the matter to be heard next in August. The West Bengal Government pays about 18% of wages as DA whereas Central Government employees receive over 55%.
Senior Advocate and CPI(M) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya said that the State Government's argument that DA will strain the exchequer does not have a legal basis. Mr. Bhattacharya said that the West Bengal Government has money for 'illegal works, including building temples and organising fairs but cannot pay employees of the State Government their salaries.'
'The court initially ordered payment of 50% of DA arrears. The State government said it will break the back of the Government. The Court then ordered payment of 25% arrears,' Mr. Bhattacharya said. According to unions 25% arrears will cost the State ₹10,000 crore.
Leaders of opposition parties welcomed the order and criticised Mamata Banerjee. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari demanded her resignation.
'I hope Mamata Banerjee will take responsibility for denying the rights of employees for years and tender her resignation,' the BJP leader said.
Describing the development as a huge victory for West Bengal Government employees, Mr. Adhikari said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government spent about ₹200 crore fighting a case against its own employees. 'Mamata Banerjee had asserted that 'DA is not a right.' Today's direction establishes that DA is indeed a right,' the LOP said.

TV anchor not liable for panellist's statement: Supreme Court
Supreme Court (Photo: ANI) NEW DELHI: Putting a premium on the right to free speech and expression, Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of Sakshi TV anchor K Srinivasa Rao, who was held by Andhra police for abetting alleged derogatory and defamatory statements by a panelist on his live show on Amaravati. Justices Mishra and Manmohan said, "Rao has not made the statement. His journalistic participation in a live TV show deserves to be protected, so as that of his fundamental right to free speech. Rao shall be released on bail on conditions to be imposed by the trial court." Guest called Amaravati 'capital of sex workers' On June 6, political analyst V V R Krishnamraju had appeared as a panelist on a show anchored by Rao on Sakshi TV, considered a mouthpiece of opposition YSR Congress Party which while in govt had abrogated previous TDP dispensation's Amaravati capital project, and referred to the capital as 'capital of sex workers". Appearing for the 70-year-old Rao, senior advocate Siddharth Dave told a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan that he was only hosting the TV show and that the statement is not attributed to him but to a panellist over whom he had no control. Opposing the plea challenging the arrest, senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Sidharth Luthra said that when the offending and derogatory statement was made against women of Andhra Pradesh, the TV anchor, instead of stopping the panellist, was seen encouragingly laughing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo The bench sought the AP government's response to his petition seeking the quashing of the FIR against him. Showdown Like Never Before: 4.5L+ New Voters Upend NMC Arithmetic
1 2 3 Nagpur: With the Maharashtra govt clearing the way for long-delayed elections to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) setting a deadline for ward formation, political parties are bracing for a contest unlike in the past — driven largely by a steep surge in voter numbers over the past decade. Between the 2012 municipal polls and the 2024 Assembly elections, the number of registered city voters jumped from 19.09 lakh to 23.65 lakh — a rise of nearly 24%. This addition of over 4.5 lakh voters is expected to dramatically impact poll outcomes across wards, forcing parties to redraw campaign strategies and reconnect with a vastly expanded electorate. As the state gears up for ward delimitation under a Supreme Court-mandated four-month schedule, the voter roll from the 2024 assembly elections is likely to form the basis for redrawing ward boundaries, despite the court's instruction to use the 2011 Census for population data. This has generated intense political interest in how wards will be structured — with voter increase, caste equations, and geographic spread all expected to influence the final layout. Speaking to TOI, former corporators, many of whom are eyeing a return to the fray, say the new numbers have altered the ground realities. "In my ward, there were about 45,000 voters in 2017. Now it's closer to 60,000. You can't rely on the old networks anymore," said a former corporator from south Nagpur. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Ten thousand new voters can completely swing the result if you're not in touch with the ground." Another ex-corporator from North Nagpur noted, "Many of the new voters are first-timers who have no memory of our previous work. This means we have to start from scratch — explain who we are and why we matter." In 2022, when the MVA govt initiated a ward restructuring exercise, the total number of voters stood at 22,33,866. By 2024 assembly elections, the figure climbed to 23,65,998 — an increase of 1,32,122 in two years. According to political observers, this growth translates to an average increase of 10,000 to 15,000 voters per ward — in some areas even more — significantly raising the bar for candidate outreach and visibility. During the eight-year gap between civic elections, Nagpur witnessed two Lok Sabha and two Vidhan Sabha polls. Yet, the absence of an elected civic body since March 2022 weakened the direct connect between former corporators and residents. While a few leaders stayed active by raising local issues or joining party-led protests, many drifted into political obscurity. With the civic elections now firmly on the horizon, parties are scrambling to revive their ground presence, but are also increasingly aware that the electoral map they knew is no longer the same. "The voter increase isn't just a statistic — it's a warning," said a senior BJP functionary. "If you can't talk to these new voters, someone else will." "One thing is clear: this will be a very different election — not only because of delayed timing or ward changes, but because the city's electorate itself has grown, diversified, and changed in ways that will test even the most seasoned of politicians," said political pandits. Doctors move SC seeking Rs 50 lakh interim compensation for Air India plane crash victims
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): Two doctors have filed a letter petition in the Supreme Court, seeking directions to the Central government to provide adequate compensation to the victims of the Air India flight AI -171 crash near Ahmedabad airport. The plea, filed on Friday by Dr Saurav Kumar and Dr Dhruv Chauhan, has urged the SC to direct the Central government to immediately announce and disburse interim compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the families of all deceased victims, including resident doctors from Ahmedabad's BJ Medical College who were among those killed. The plea states that as per various constitutional provisions and a 2020 Supreme Court judgement which laid down detailed principles for assessing compensation, it is the state's duty to take concrete remedial action, in this regard. The plea has further called for the constitution of a High-Level Expert Committee comprising retired judges, aviation experts, actuaries and economists to assess and determine final compensation based on principles established in the 2020 Supreme Court judgement. Moreover, the petition seeks directions for the Central Government to provide rehabilitation support, including employment opportunities for eligible family members of the deceased persons and for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash with necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The plea has been filed by Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput on behalf of the two doctors. Following the crash, the Tata group, which owns Air India, announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore each for the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic Air India plane crash on Thursday.
