Poop Drones Are Keeping Sewers Running So Humans Don't Have to

Poorly maintained sewers can have disastrous consequences, but regular inspections can be time-consuming, expensive, and dangerous. The solution: subterranean dung drones.
On the morning of Christmas Eve 2016, residents of a house in Fraser, Michigan heard a curious pop, pop, popping sound coming from their walls. After initially dismissing it as melting snow falling from the roof, they soon realised the truth: the noise was the result of bricks being squeezed out of place as their home slowly crumpled into a sinkhole.
The house and several nearby were evacuated as authorities assessed the situation and determined its cause: a collapsed sewer interceptor, threatening several homes and a long stretch of Fraser's busy 15 Mile Road. It was hardly the start to the festive season anyone would wish for.
'This was quite the impact to our system and community,' says Vince Astorino. As Operations Director at the Macomb County Public Works Office, he's responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the county's wastewater infrastructure, including some 68 miles of sewer lines. 'An 11-foot diameter sewer, approximately 70-feet deep, experienced a failure which drastically reduced wastewater flow. This section of pipe is near the main outlet of our system and approximately 800,000 residents rely on it to convey their wastewater downstream.'
Prompt action from Astorino and his team got bypass systems in place in time to prevent sewage backing up into residents' homes, and in the end only one building—the house where the popping sound was heard—required demolition. But it was nine months until the offending stretch of pipe, roughly 4000 feet of it, would be fully replaced. The direct cost to taxpayers was around $75 million, not taking into account the added costs to residents and nearby businesses as a result of the disruption.
The key to preventing disasters like this is regular inspection of sewer lines, hunting down any cracks and fissures that, if left unattended, can lead to soil ingress and eventual collapse of the pipe. But sewer pipes can be dark, cramped and filled with pockets of gas, making inspecting large networks using traditional methods (typically a tethered, remotely operated crawler fitted with a camera or even in-person) a slow, costly and often hazardous process.
This is where drones come in. Designed and engineered to operate in confined spaces, a new generation of flying robots is being sent into sewers to perform inspections in a safer, more efficient way.
The Elios 3 drone is a popular option for sewer inspections. Flyability
One such drone is the Elios 3, designed and manufactured by Swiss company Flyability and used by major industry players like Veolia. Equipped as standard with a protective cage, impact-resistant exoskeleton, 16,000-lumen lighting rig, 4K camera and LiDAR, it can navigate through dark and dusty pipes while creating a live 3D model of the environment. The modular design means it can also be fitted with specialized payloads like explosive gas sensors or ultrasonic thickness gauges.
Eloise McMinn Mitchell, Communication Manager at Flyability, says that the company is seeing huge sales growth as a result of the Elios 3's capabilities and efficiency versus in-person human inspections, particularly when it comes to sewers. 'To inspect a stretch of sewer underneath a road, you'll need teams of at least four people and have to divert traffic in multiple locations. With the drone, you just need two people, and nobody has to climb into the sewer, eliminating confined space risks and exposure to hazardous environments.'
As a result, the safety rules surrounding drones are much less rigid than when humans are involved, which McMinn Mitchell says greatly eases the cost of inspections. 'There's an average 40 percent cost reduction compared to traditional methods, and you can inspect 900 meters in a day with the drone compared to 400 meters.'
In May 2024, in a drive to streamline their inspection process, Macomb County adopted a technology-led approach combining a remotely piloted Asio X drone, built by Flyability rival Flybotix, with a software program called SewerAI. The total cost of both was around $100,000. Previously, the county had been spending $1 million on inspections every three years, manually inspecting footage for defects, many of which could be missed due to the poor image quality.
Around 16 inches across and equipped with powerful 40,000-lumen lights, a 4K camera and a cage for protection against collisions, the Asio X can capture crystal clear video of the sewer system while navigating all but the narrowest of pipes. Astorino describes it as a 'night and day difference' to the old method.

Unlike some of the latest consumer drones, which fly almost autonomously, the Asio X requires mostly manual control, and in some very unforgiving locations too, as Astorino points out: 'It's dark, air flow can quickly change within a confined space, and managing a flight path above flowing water in a restricted pipe is challenging.' As a result, he leaves flight to the experts: 'Our main operator, Captain Zach, is able to fly through some very tricky environments.'
That being said, the inspection process itself is straightforward. 'An antenna is lowered into the manhole to provide signal strength from the drone controller to the drone,' Astorino tells WIRED. 'The operator will fly the drone from one manhole to the next, recording video through that flight path.' With around 20 minutes of battery life, the Asio X can document around 1,000 feet of pipe in a single flight, capturing not only video but LiDAR and infrared scans, and gas readings as it passes through a section of sewer.
Under the old system, video data would be analyzed in the field, with the camera operator logging defects as they navigated through the pipes. Now, the drone-captured data is sent off to contractors at SewerAI, who run it through their AI-assisted algorithms to identify defects automatically. Astorino tells me it's been a game-changer, saving his team huge amounts of time and money.

'We performed months of testing against coded video in the field from various contractors against what SewerAI was able to do with the same footage, and every single time SewerAI excelled in what it was able to find and code correctly.' Previously, inspecting a section of sewer pipe might take months, but SewerAI has an agreement to send data analysis back to the county within 10 days; Astorino says it usually does so within 24 hours.
The team have been so impressed with the software package that even in areas where the drone cannot go and more traditional methods of inspection are required—small diameter pipes, for instance—the resulting data is now sent off for analysis rather than being coded in the field. Old data can be quickly reviewed and re-analyzed too, picking up defects the original contractors may have missed at the time. This means repair work can be done where it's most needed, preventing the sort of worsening conditions that can lead to disastrous and costly incidents like the 2016 sinkhole.
Macomb County has been a pioneer in this field. It's the first county in Michigan to utilize this combination of drones and AI software for underground infrastructure inspection and has won two in-state awards as a result of its forward thinking. But Vince Astorino tells me he and his team are always on the lookout for new ways to modernize operations. 'It's hard to count out great leaps forward in technology around this space, especially with the great AI race taking place all around us. We're keeping our options open.'

The native of Italy, who is worth $30 million, suffered serious injuries in the horrific episode, during which Manhattan prosecutors alleged he was tied to a chair with electrical wire, tased while standing in water, cut on his legs and arm with a chainsaw, urinated on and forced to take drugs. His accused tormentors — crypto entrepreneur John Woeltz and Swiss business man William Duplessie — also allegedly destroyed Carturan's passport. Carturan was rescued after he fled the townhouse barefoot on May 23 and flagged down a traffic cop for help. The former captive has already contacted the Italian consulate on the Upper East Side in order to get a new passport, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported. 'Only on Saturday did the first contacts take place between the family (who said little or nothing keeping the conditions and the account of what happened confidential) and the Italian Foreign Ministry,' according to the outlet. His family owns a herbalist shop, according to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. Carturan was living in Rivoli, a town in the city of Turin in northern Italy, with his family before venturing to the Big Apple on May 6 to meet Woeltz, according to authorities and sources. He had studied psychology before dropping out of school to trade crypto, the Italian press reported. He was apparently hoping to retrieve Bitcoin allegedly stolen from him by Woeltz and Duplessie, who then turned the tables, took him captive and threatened to kill him and his family unless he gave them the password to his bitcoin wallet, prosecutors said. Woeltz, 37, of Kentucky, is believed to be worth $100 million. Polaroids that were found at the property showed Carturan — who reportedly has a net worth of $30 million — with a gun pointed at his head and being forced to smoke crack cocaine, authorities said. The pair are due in court June 11.

Ahead of President Trump's looming tariffs on Switzerland, watchmakers and retailers alike are clamoring to get their hands on timepieces. 1.3 million Swiss watches left the European country in April, totaling $3 billion (2.5 billion Swiss francs). That's an 18 percent increase from the same time last year, according to the Federation of Swiss Watch Industry's latest data, Bloomberg reported. Exports stateside skyrocketed 149 percent year-over-year to hit a total of $851.9 million—a figure that's equivalent to around a fifth of 2024's total exports to the United States. In particular, timepieces made from precious metals, steel, and bimetallic materials, saw the biggest increases. The drastic jump seen in April is the 'result of early shipments prompted by the announcement of U.S. tariffs,' Jean-Philippe Bertschy, an analyst at investment firm Vontobel, told Bloomberg. The hike is likely a direct response to the tariffs and not indicative of an increase demand, he said. As we mentioned, Trump announced a 10 percent tariff on Swiss imports back in April. Since then, he has discussed adding an additional 31 percent levy if a trade deal isn't struck by July 9; that deadline, however, could be pushed back to a later time, according to Bloomberg. As for the rest of the world, it didn't see a similar surge. Removing the U.S. from the equation, Swiss exports fell 6.4 percent across the globe in April. The Asian market struggled: China had one of the larger drops, with a 30 percent decrease, while Singapore and Hong Kong saw exports drop 9 percent and 23 percent, respectively. The U.K., Japan, and France, meanwhile, saw only single-digit growth, according to WWD. The U.S. tariffs could affect more than just Swiss watches. The levies would impact luxury automakers, too, though they will not apply to cars over 25 years old. The American wine industry, meanwhile, could suffer in the face of any sort of trade war—which could lead to a massive boom on the secondary market. With the Swiss watch industry, though, we'll just have to wait and see how things shake out. An artificial lake building up behind the rubble left by a glacier that dramatically plunged down a Swiss mountainside, destroying a village, is beginning to drain, authorities said Friday, reducing fears of a second catastrophe. The huge barricade of debris formed when the Birch glacier collapsed on Wednesday has blocked the river Lonza in Switzerland's southern Wallis region, fuelling concern the dam of rubble could give way and flood the valley. But as reconnaissance flights and inspections progressed, authorities said the water from the newly formed lake, which has been slowly submerging the remaining houses in the obliterated village of Blatten, was beginning to find its way over, through and around the blockage. "This development is positive, but we remain cautious," said Stephane Ganzer, head of the regional security department. "The risk remains, even if it is diminishing," he told a press conference, stressing that "no evacuations are planned" in the villages downstream in the Lotschental valley, one of the most beautiful in southern Switzerland. The outflow "makes us optimistic and suggests that the water is finding a good path", explained Christian Studer of the Wallis canton's Natural Hazards Service. However, work to pump water from the lake has still not begun as the ground remains too unstable, particularly on the mountainside. The Lotschental valley stretches for just under 30 kilometres (20 miles) and is home to around 1,500 inhabitants. It is renowned for the beauty of its landscapes dominated by snow-capped peaks, its small traditional villages, and its spectacular hiking trails. But its face has been forever changed by the glacier collapse. - One person still missing - Authorities remain on alert, and communities downstream from the landslide, including in the Rhone Valley, which the Lonza flows into, are nonetheless preparing for a possible evacuation. An artificial dam in the village of Ferden, downstream in the Lotschental valley, has been emptied and should be able to contain any downward rush of water, authorities say. One 64-year-old man, believed to have been in the danger zone at the time, remains missing. The collapsed glacier destroyed most of Blatten, which had been home to 300 people and was evacuated last week due to the impending danger. "That shows the importance of early warnings and early action," Clare Nullis, spokeswoman for the World Meteorological Organization, told a press briefing in Geneva. "The landscape will never be the same again. The village will never be the same again. But it is an example of how we can use forecasts and warnings to save people's lives," she said. Nullis said the Swiss had provided a "textbook example" of what should be done, but stressed that not all countries had such highly developed early warning systems in place. The landslide was so heavy it was even picked up by Switzerland's seismographs. "This is probably the most catastrophic event for the last 150 years in Switzerland and probably in the whole Alps," in terms of a rock and ice avalanche, Christophe Lambiel, senior lecturer at the University of Lausanne's Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics, told AFP. - 'Erased within seconds' - The glacier was below the 3,342-metre (10,965-foot) high Kleines Nesthorn peak. In the fortnight before its collapse, a series of falls from the mountain dumped three million cubic metres of rock onto the ice surface. That increased the weight, and with the glacier on a steep slope, it ultimately gave way in dramatic fashion, plunging down on Blatten, at 1,540 metres' altitude in the valley floor. Experts said it was too early to make a direct link to climate change, but told AFP that thawing permafrost in the cracks in the rock likely played a role in destabilising the mountain. Matthias Huss, the director of Glacier Monitoring Switzerland (GLAMOS), said the drastic collapse might bring global attention to the Alpine glaciers, and ultimately the impact of climate change on them. "Often a big disaster has to strike before people realise that something is going on," he told AFP. "It's very tangible: the destruction of a whole village is easily understandable to everybody.
