1 Wife For 2 Brothers: Why Himachal Pradesh's Hatti Tribe Practices Rare Polyandry Tradition
Two brothers from Himachal Pradesh's Hatti community married the same woman, Sunita Chauhan, reviving the ancient polyandry tradition 'Jajda', drawing national attention.
In a rare event, two brothers from Himachal Pradesh married the same woman, drawing widespread attention. The men who belong to Himachal's Hatti community have revived the centuries-old unconventional tribal tradition of marriage called 'Jajda'.
The rare wedding event captured national attention after photos of a bride marrying two brothers in Himachal Pradesh went viral on social media. The wedding was held in Shillai village of Sirmaur district on July 12.
The wedding event has brought back to life the centuries-old practice of polyandry—where one woman marries multiple men, usually siblings—which is now losing its relevance.
Himachal Brothers Marry Same Woman
The bride, Sunita Chauhan, tied the knot with Pradeep and Kapil Negi in a three-day ceremony that featured local folk songs, dances, and community festivities, news agency PTI reported.
While polyandry is increasingly becoming rare in modern times, the trio embraced the tradition publicly, calling it a matter of pride.
Why Is This Rare Tradition Practised?
The actual wedding ritual is known as 'Jajda', and it begins with the bride arriving in a ceremonial procession to the groom's village. A key component of the ceremony is 'Seenj', a ritual performed at the groom's residence, where priests chant mantras in the native dialect.
According to Kundan Singh Shastri, General Secretary of the Kendriya Hatti Samiti, the tradition dates back thousands of years and was originally developed to prevent the division of ancestral land among heirs.
'This tradition was invented thousands of years ago to save a family's agricultural land from further division," PTI quoted Shastri as saying.
Shastri added that the tradition promotes unity and cooperation within extended families, even among half-brothers. In tribal society, he said, a larger male workforce offered not only economic benefits but also increased security. 'If you have bigger family, more men, you are more secure in a tribal society", Shastri added.
The Hatti community lives in the Trans-Giri region along the Himachal Pradesh–Uttarakhand border. According to media reports, five such polyandrous marriages have taken place in the last six years in Badhana village in Sirmaur district.
Despite its historical roots, the unconventional custom is now fading fast due to rising literacy, especially among women, and improved economic conditions. In most villages, polyandry is no longer openly practiced and survives only in isolated cases—often discreetly.

Ajay Devgn's Son Of Sardaar 2 Baby Steps Away From Rs 30-Crore Mark
Ajay Devgn's comedy drama clocked an overall Hindi occupancy of 11.81 per cent on Monday, August 4. Ajay Devgn's comedy-drama Son of Sardaar 2 was released in theatres on August 1. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the rib-tickling sequel started its journey on a promising note with strong audience support, translating into impressive box office numbers. On its opening weekend, the film held its ground well, as the masses loved the high-energy humour and dramatic flair. But on Monday, the film hit its slowest day so far. As per early estimates by Sacnilk, Son of Sardaar 2 added just Rs 2.50 crore to its box office tally on day 4. While the dip in footfall isn't surprising given it was a Monday (the day is notorious for pulling the brakes on most theatrical runs), it's still crucial for the film to gain momentum through the week. Son Of Sardaar 2's Box Office Collection According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film opened with Rs 7.25 crore on Friday. Over the weekend, Son of Sardaar 2 saw steady growth, bringing its first weekend total to Rs 24.75 crore. It collected Rs 8.25 crore on Saturday, August 2, and Rs 9.25 crore on Sunday, August 3. With Monday's numbers in, Son of Sardaar 2's total collection now stands at Rs 27.25 crore. The comedy drama clocked an overall Hindi occupancy of 11.81 per cent on Monday, August 4. The film saw steady growth through the day, with 6.21 per cent occupancy in morning shows, 11.16 per cent in the afternoon, and 13.23 per cent in the evening. The numbers peaked during night shows, with 16.64 per cent occupancy. Son Of Sardaar 2's Storyline and Cast The action comedy, helmed by Vijay Kumar Arora, offers a blend of action and comedy, with intriguing twists and new characters added to the OG film. Son of Sardaar 2 follows Jassi, who travels to Scotland to win back his estranged wife. But his journey takes him into a hostage crisis, a mafia war and a chaotic Sikh wedding. Besides Ajay Devgn, the film features an ensemble cast of talented actors, including Sanjay Mishra, Dolly Ahluwalia, Ravi Kishan, Neeru Bajwa, Vindu Dara Singh, Mrunal Thakur, Chunky Pandey, Kubbra Sait, Deepak Dobriyal, Sharat Saxena, Sahil Mehta and debutant Roshni Walia, in other pivotal roles. A spiritual sequel to Ajay Devgn's 2012 hit film of the same name, the comedy franchise is backed by Ajay Devgn, Pravin Talreja, Jyoti Deshpande and NR Pachisia, under the banners of Devgn Films and Jio Studios.
