KUALA LUMPUR: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) expressed its gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Malaysian government for their full assistance and support to Harimau Malaya which led to their roaring 4-0 victory over Vietnam at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, last night.
FAM in a statement announced that apart from financial assistance through special allocations for Harimau Malaya, the Malaysian Government also facilitated the documentation of new heritage players to enable them to play in the second match of Group F for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Final Qualifiers in Saudi Arabia.
'It is hoped the full support from the country's top leadership and supporters will continue to inspire the performance of Harimau Malaya in upcoming international matches en route to become one of the giants in Asia,' the statement quoted.
Before more than 60,000 spectators yesterday, Malaysia ended an 11-year winless streak against Vietnam with four goals from Joao Figueiredo in the 49th minute, Rodrigo Holgado ('59), Corbin Ong ('67) and Dion Cools ('89).
The result saw Malaysia take the lead in Group F with six points, while Vietnam is in second place with three points.

Razif Sidek hospitalised with breathing difficulty
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Razif Sidek, who captained Malaysia to the 1992 Thomas Cup title, was hospitalised yesterday with breathing issues. Razif, 63, is suspected to be suffering from pneumonia. Datuk Rashid Sidek, a former Olympic bronze medallist, said that his elder brother was in stable condition after visiting him at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur. "He is in stable condition. He had just returned from a short holiday from Australia and since it was winter there, his health possibly got affected," said Rashid. "Razif is under good care and I pray that he recovers and returns to full health." Razif, who used to be world No. 1 with younger brother Jalani, had won numerous honours including the 1982 All England men's doubles crown. Although not coaching actively nowadays, Razif has been keeping in touch with Malaysian badminton and never shies away from airing his critical views on the performances of national shuttlers. His son Fazriq Razif is also part of the national men's doubles squad and he currently partners Bryan Goonting.

After winning over Malaysian fans with a heroic debut in Harimau Malaya colours, the Argentine-born striker wasted no time in turning his focus back to his club duties, proving that his commitment stretches far beyond borders. Without much rest, Holgado hopped on a flight almost immediately after the match to return to Colombia, where his club America de Cali are chasing the league title. The 29-year-old Holgado was the talk of Bukit Jalil on Tuesday night, not just for his goal in Malaysia's commanding 4-0 victory over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifiers, but for the sheer grit he displayed. Bloodied after a head collision with a Vietnam defender, he refused to come off, choosing instead to battle through the pain and cap off his night with a 59th-minute strike that sealed his name in the hearts of Malaysian fans. "A dream night," he said on his social media page yesterday. "Very happy to represent this beautiful country and fulfill this dream in my soccer career." The striker was effusive in his gratitude – not just to the fans and coaching staff of Harimau Malaya, but also to his club and their supporters for standing by him during a crucial point in their championship campaign. Olympian Bryan joins South Korea as diving coach to beef up Asiad prep
New role: Former national diver Bryan Nickson Lomas (behind, third from left) is coaching South Korea's diving team. PETALING JAYA: Olympian Bryan Nickson Lomas is set to be Malaysian diving's No. 1 'enemy' at the Asian Games next year. This is because Bryan, Malaysia Aquatics' former technical director, has started a new job as the coach with South Korea and under his guidance, expect them to make life difficult for Malaysia during the Games in Aichi-Nagoya in Japan next year. His first overseas assignment with South Korea however will be the World Championships in Singapore from July 26-Aug 3. The 34-year-old Sarawakian is the second former international diver to coach overseas after Wendy Ng Yan Yee, who is currently a talent development coach with Singapore Aquatics. For Bryan, a coaching contract that runs until the 2026 Asian Games was too good an offer to pass. The first test in Singapore will be a challenge but he is relishing it. "South Korea seldom take in foreign coaches, so this is a good experience for me to broaden my coaching skills," said Bryan. "I previously coached in Kuwait but this will be a different challenge altogether. "The national diving training centre is in Jincheon, about 90 minutes drive from Seoul, so I am still getting used to things here," he said. Bryan was a member of the Malaysian diving team for 12 years and competed at three Olympics between 2004 and 2012. He then trained to become a qualified diving judge and coach before serving as the diving technical director for Malaysia Aquatics since early 2023. Bryan is looking forward to his first world meet as a coach. He previously represented Malaysia in the platform discipline in four world championships between 2005 and 2011. His best outing was finishing seventh in the 10m platform individual final in Melbourne in 2007. "The South Korean squad are not as strong as last year. I can say Malaysian team look stronger than South Korea. "But national team selection next year will be different. The Asian Games will be the most important assignment," added Bryan, who will surely be plotting to guide South Korean diving team to again finish ahead of Malaysia and hosts Japan at the Asian Games. For the record, South Korea claimed two silver and four bronze medals in diving in Hangzhou two years ago while Malaysia managed one silver and four bronzes. Japan took home one silver and two bronze medals. China topped the tables with 10 gold and six silver medals.
