Rubio urges UN members to back 'simple, historic' US resolution on Ukraine

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday urged UN members to approve a new US-proposed resolution on the Ukraine war that according to diplomats omits any mention of Kyiv's territory occupied by Russia.
"The United States has proposed a simple, historic resolution in the United Nations that we urge all member states to support in order to chart a path to peace," Rubio said in a statement, without commenting in detail on the contents of the proposed resolution.
The United States proposed Friday a United Nations resolution on the Ukraine conflict that omitted any mention of Kyiv's territory occupied by Russia, diplomatic sources told AFP.Washington's proposal comes amid an intensifying feud between US President Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky which has seen Trump claim it was "not important" for his Ukrainian counterpart to be involved in peace talks. It also appeared to rival a separate draft resolution produced by Kyiv and its European allies, countries that Trump has also sought to sideline from talks on the future of the three-year-old war.The Ukrainian-European text stresses the need to redouble diplomatic efforts to end the war this year, noting several initiatives to that end, while also blaming Russia for the invasion and committing to Kyiv's "territorial integrity."The text also repeats the UN General Assembly's previous demands for an immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. Those votes had wide support, with around 140 of the 193 member states voting in favour.Washington's text, seen by AFP, calls for a "swift end to the conflict" without mentioning Kyiv's territorial integrity, and was welcomed by Moscow's ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia as "a good move" -- but stressed that it did not address the "roots" of the conflict. In a break with past resolutions proposed and supported by Washington, the latest draft, produced ahead of a General Assembly meeting Monday to coincide with the third anniversary of the war, does not criticize Moscow.Instead the 65-word text begins by "mourning the tragic loss of life throughout the Russia-Ukraine conflict."It then continued by "reiterating" that the United Nation's purpose is the maintenance of "international peace and security" -- without singling out Moscow as the source of the conflict.France's ambassador to the UN, Nicolas De Riviere, the EU's only permanent member of the council, said he had no comment "for the moment.""A stripped-down text of this type that does not condemn Russian aggression or explicitly reference Ukraine's territorial integrity looks like a betrayal of Kyiv and a jab at the EU, but also a show of disdain for core principles of international law," said Richard Gowan of the International Crisis Group.
"I think even a lot of states that favour an early end to the war will worry that the US is ignoring core elements of the UN Charter."

Trump calls LA unrest "foreign invasion"
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday escalated his rhetoric against ongoing protests in Los Angeles, describing the unrest as an attempted "foreign invasion" during a speech to troops at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. 'We will not allow an American city to be invaded and conquered by a foreign enemy,' Trump declared, referring to the protests, which erupted in response to immigration raids across California. 'What you're witnessing in California is a full-blown assault on peace, on public order, and on national sovereignty,' he added. 'It's being carried out by rioters bearing foreign flags, aiming to continue a foreign invasion of our country.' Trump's remarks mark one of his strongest condemnations yet of the demonstrations, framing the unrest as not just domestic disorder but a national security threat.

Trump slams Iran's nuclear posture as U.S. command warns of escalation
ALBAWABA- U.S. President Donald Trump has described Iran's recent behavior in nuclear negotiations as 'more aggressive,' telling Fox News that Tehran's latest response to a U.S. Proposal is 'unacceptable.' 'Iran is asking for things you can't do,' Trump said, adding, 'They're behaving completely differently than they were just a few days ago.' These remarks come amid growing alarm from U.S. Military leadership. The commander of U.S. Central Command warned that Iran has significantly increased its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium, pushing the region closer to a potential crisis. While describing Iranian proxies as weakened, the commander identified the Houthis as the most serious ongoing threat. He emphasized that U.S. forces are prepared to respond with overwhelming force should President Trump give the order to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. A military option remains on the table, with the president and defense secretary reportedly briefed on multiple scenarios. The commander also warned that if Israel launches a unilateral attack on Iran, it would likely endanger U.S. forces stationed across the region. Tensions further escalated as Iran's Atomic Energy Organization spokesman, Behrouz Kamalvandi, cautioned that Tehran could scale back cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if a resolution is passed against Iran. Kamalvandi said Iran has 'cooperated beyond its legal obligations,' but would reassess this stance if its goodwill is not reciprocated. In a parallel development, Iran's intelligence ministry claimed it had completed a major covert operation to obtain a trove of highly classified Israeli documents. The cache reportedly includes sensitive files related to Israel's nuclear and military programs, details of dual-use scientific projects, and alleged collaborations with U.S. and European institutions. Iran says the material contains identities and locations of Israeli scientists and could be shared with allies or anti-Israel resistance groups. Tehran asserts the documents expose what it calls 'false and misleading' Israeli reports to international bodies, particularly regarding Iran's peaceful nuclear program. The documents are now reportedly being reviewed by Iran's armed forces and intelligence agencies.

Trump deploys 700 Marines to Los Angeles amid immigration protests
The Trump administration announced Monday that it is sending 700 US Marines and thousands of National Guard troops to Los Angeles, escalating federal involvement in the city amid ongoing protests against immigration raids. The move prompted an immediate and angry response from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who denounced the decision as reckless and authoritarian. According to a senior administration official, the Marines will come from Camp Pendleton and are tasked with supporting federal law enforcement operations. 'Active-duty US Marines from Camp Pendleton will be deployed to Los Angeles to help protect federal agents and buildings,' the official told Agence France-Presse, later updating the initial figure of 500 Marines to 700. Deploying active-duty military personnel within US cities remains a rare and controversial action. The US military confirmed the Marines' mobilization, saying they would 'seamlessly integrate' with National Guard forces that had already been deployed. President Trump had previously ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to the city over the weekend, with around 300 stationed at federal sites by Sunday. On Monday, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced that 'an additional 2,000 California National Guard [are] to be called into federal service to support ICE & to enable federal law-enforcement officers to safely conduct their duties.' It remains unclear whether this new deployment is in addition to the previous 2,000 or if it includes the 300 already on the ground. Governor Newsom sharply criticized the federal intervention, calling it a political stunt aimed at creating disorder. 'Trump is trying to provoke chaos by sending 4,000 soldiers onto American soil,' he wrote on X. He had earlier blasted the deployment as a 'deranged' move by a 'dictatorial' president. LA: Your voice matters. Trump is trying to provoke chaos by sending 4,000 soldiers onto American soil. Foolish agitators who take advantage of Trump's chaos will be held accountable. Stay safe. Stay calm. Look out for one another. — Governor Gavin Newsom (@CAgovernor) June 10, 2025 The decision to involve US Marines comes after four consecutive days of protests in Los Angeles, some of which have resulted in tense encounters with law enforcement. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth first mentioned the possibility of deploying Marines on Saturday, a plan that now appears to be in full motion.
