Chloe Kelly fired in the decisive spot-kick as England beat Spain 3-1 in a penalty shootout to win Euro 2025 on Sunday, successfully defending the title they won three years ago after an enthralling game that ended 1-1 after extra time.
It was another spectacular turnaround from Sarina Wiegman's side, who came back from two goals down to beat Sweden in a shootout in the last eight and beat Italy in the semi-finals with another extra-time goal from Kelly.

World and Nations League champions Spain made the breakthrough in the 25th minute as Ona Batlle crossed and caught the England defence flat-footed, allowing Mariona Caldentey to head the ball past goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

With Lauren James suffering an ankle injury, England were struggling, but Kelly came off the bench to replace her just before the break and it proved an inspired substitution.
Kelly helped close down England's porous left flank and provided the cross for Alessia Russo to level in the 57th minute, the forward heading home her inch-perfect assist.
Spain continued to monopolise the ball but could not find another goal before the end of normal time, and the story continued through extra time as they pressed and probed, but could not break the English defence as the game finished 1-1.
The Spaniards got the shootout off to a great start when Cata Coll stopped Beth Mead's effort, but England keeper Hannah Hampton saved from Caldentey and from Aitana Bonmati to put England in the driving seat.
Coll got Spain back into it with another one-handed stop to block Leah Williamson, but Spain substitute Salma Paralluelo hit her kick wide of the target.

That set the stage for Kelly to repeat her 2022 heroics, when she scored the extra-time winner over Germany that won them the title at Wembley.
"The first time was so nice, we had to do it twice." 🏆🏆

PRANCING KELLY
Kelly made her trademark prancing run-up before smashing the ball into the net and peeling away in ecstasy to celebrate with her teammates in front of the England fans.
'I'm so proud, so proud of this team, so grateful to wear this badge, and I'm so proud to be English … I was cool, I was composed and I knew I was going to hit the back of the net,' Kelly said.

The final was the first time since the inaugural edition in 1984, in which England were beaten by Sweden, that the game was decided by a penalty shootout.
'Unbelievable, incredible, showing throughout this tournament we can come back when we go a goal down, and we have that grit,' an elated Hampton said.
'We've got English blood in us, so we never say die and we just keep going, and we did that today.'
For Spain's Bonmati, the defeat was bitter.
'I don't have much emotion left to be honest. I have emptied myself of emotion. We are all exhausted,' she said.
'I have to say sorry, because it was my fault in the end, but I was not able to score it (the penalty). Congratulations to our opponents. In my opinion we were superior in the match, (but) on some occasions, that's not enough in football.'

Dale Steyn slams Washington Sundar - Ravindra Jadeja for chasing ‘free milestones', backs Ben Stokes in handshake row

A new-look Team India fought their way through the last two days of the Manchester Test to secure a draw and keep the five-match series alive going into the Oval. While there was plenty of talk about the grit and determination shown by the Indian batters, a fresh controversy emerged in the final hour of play on Day 5 when English skipper Ben Stokes offered to end the game with a handshake, only for the Indian batters to refuse as they were closing in on their respective centuries. After Stokes' offer was turned down, the English captain tried to persuade Ravindra Jadeja by asking if he really wanted to score a century against the likes of Harry Brook and Ben Duckett. Zak Crawley also jumped into the exchange, urging Jadeja to shake hands with Stokes and leave the field. While much of the cricketing fraternity—including former England captains Alastair Cook and Nasser Hussain—backed India's decision to keep batting, others criticised the move as going against the 'spirit of the game'. Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has now weighed in on the debate, siding with the English camp and accusing Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja of chasing 'free milestones.' He said their decision to continue batting was not the most gentlemanly thing to do. Steyn was replying to a post by Proteas spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "Why is there such a big deal being made about the Indians choosing not to accept the offer to end the game in a draw immediately? The offer was made. The offer was rejected, and they were fully entitled to make their choice. They got their 100s, which they worked hard for. Game over," Steyn replied to that post stating, 'Shamo this onion has many layers to it, and each one will make someone cry. The only issue I see here is the one thing people aren't realizing, the batters weren't playing for 100s, they were batting for a DRAW. That was the goal. Draw the game. Once that was accomplished, and a result was out of the question a handshake was offered, that's the gentlemanly thing to do right? It's not then the time to realize they safe and now say no we'd prefer some free milestones… although within the rules, just seems a little, well, odd. That said, they did bat well, and maybe with the last hour approaching they should have been more aggressive in reaching those milestones, at least then, we could all agree, no team tried to out do the other in this weird situation,'

'Doesn't reflect well on Ben Stokes' team': Ex-England batter on antics vs India in Manchester

India batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar refused to shake hands with England captain Ben Stokes. (Screengrab) Former England cricketer Mark Ramprakash has criticised the English cricket team's behaviour during the final moments of the Manchester Test match against India, where stump microphone caught exchanges between players regarding Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar 's decision to continue batting for their centuries despite England's offer to end the match in a draw. The incident occurred in the last 30 minutes of play when England captain Ben Stokes approached the Indian batters to propose ending the match early. At that time, Jadeja was batting on 89 and Sundar on 80. The Indians declined the offer and continued batting, with Jadeja going on to score his second Test century and Sundar achieving his maiden Test hundred before agreeing to conclude the match in a draw. India stay alive, England frustrated after draw; handshake drama at Old Trafford and more The stump microphone captured Stokes saying to Jadeja, "Jaddu, do you want to get a Test 100 against Brook & Duckett?" To which Jadeja responded, "What do you want me to do, just walk off?" England's Zak Crawley was also heard adding, "You can, just shake your hand." "The stump microphone and words don't reflect well on Ben Stokes' team, who, let's be fair, are doing a fantastic job of reinvigorating Test cricket. They are playing wonderfully well. The cricket has been on such high class that it is a shame to dwell on it," Ramprakash told Sky Sports. Ramprakash questioned the fairness of England's approach, suggesting a double standard might exist. "You have to wonder if England had a player on 90 not out, would we have continued. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like My Brows Look Fuller Looking Now [See Results] NULASTIN Learn More Undo We hear about England players being very proud on being on the honour boards at Lord's and other grounds because those milestones are huge achievements. I can understand where India were coming from," he said. "I think Ben was possibly a bit premature going up (to the Indian batters) in the way he did. It has to be agreed by the opposition captain," Ramprakash added. Ramprakash defended the Indian players' decision to continue batting, particularly highlighting the significance of the moment for Washington Sundar. "India had one player, Washington Sundar, who hadn't got a hundred before and I know that England side like to not think about milestones but for that player, he may never get there again. It was quite a big moment for him. And equally for Jadeja to try and get another Test hundred. They kind of earned the right to stay on, I suppose, from their point of view," he said. The match ultimately ended in a draw after both Indian batters reached their respective centuries, with Jadeja hitting a six off Harry Brook's bowling to reach his milestone. After Gaikwad, Khaleel Ahmed pulls out of County contract midway, cuts short his stint for Essex

Indian left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed, who had joined joined English domestic team Essex for the County Championship and One Day Cup until the end of the 2025 season, cut short his stint in England and pulled out of the Championship, citing personal reasons, announced the English club on Monday. In a statement released by Essex, the club confirmed Ahmed is travelling back to India. 'Essex Cricket can confirm that Khaleel Ahmed has made the decision to return home for personal reasons and will be ending his time with the Club. While we are disappointed to see him leave, we fully support Khaleel's decision and are grateful for the contributions he made during his time with us. Everyone at Essex Cricket wishes Khaleel all the very best for the future,' reads the statement. Khaleel represented Essex in only two matches. He picked just four wickets in those two games at an average of 64.50 after signing a contract with Essex in June. This is the second instance of an Indian cricketer pulling out of the County contract midway in the last two weeks. Earlier, India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad backed out of the County Championship deal that he had signed up for with Yorkshire in June. The Chennai Super Kings captain was due to appear for his debut on Tuesday, but has now opted out of the deal due to personal reasons. Yorkshire had also shown disappointment in Gaikwad's decision but said they hope everything is okay. 'Unfortunately Gaikwad's not coming now for personal reasons,' Yorkshire head coach Anthony McGrath had said. 'We're not going to have him for Scarborough or for the rest of the season. So that's disappointing. I can't tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything's ok. 'We've literally just found out. We're working behind the scenes on what we can do. But it's only two or three days away, so I'm not sure what we can do at the moment. We're working to try and get a possible replacement, but time pressure is the issue. I can't give you anything more than that at the moment,' McGrath added. Yorkshire ended up signing Pakistan batter Imam-ul-Haq as the replacement. The Essex side is yet to announce Khaleel's replacement.
