Netflix's Ted Sarandos reveals Sanjay Leela Bhansali's bold Heeramandi pitch felt like a 'dare' as he opens up on the show's massive vision and journey.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali decided to bring his signature grandeur to a streaming platform in 2024 and it turned heads. Known for his larger-than-life filmmaking, Bhansali had never made a series before. So when he pitched Heeramandi to Netflix, it wasn't just another meeting—it felt like a bold move.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, who was personally involved in the greenlighting process, shared how Bhansali presented his vision. 'Heeramandi was probably one of the most creatively interesting projects I've worked on in India. I was involved in the greenlighting meetings for it. He (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) came to LA to do the pitch. He came in with this very big vision. Honestly, it almost felt like a dare—like he was saying, 'I dare you to make this; it's so big. He's a legend of cinema, so the idea of him making a TV Show was unheard of. I thought he came for us to say no. And then, when we said yes, there were lots of delays. It was a complicated production."
Announced back in 2021, Heeramandi took nearly three years to complete and finally premiered in May 2024. Staying true to his cinematic style, Bhansali insisted on using massive real-life sets instead of digital backdrops, bringing old-school charm to modern streaming.
'He built these enormous, practical sets that we shot on. There was something beautifully old-fashioned about every element of the production. And he was so proud of it. I was so proud of him. To me, Heeramandi is a true reflection of India's deep, enduring love for cinema," Sarandos said during his chat on the WTF podcast hosted by Nikhil Kamath.
About Heeramandi
Set in Lahore during the pre-Partition era, Heeramandi tells a fictional story centered around the lives of courtesans in the city's red-light district. Bhansali first came up with the idea in 2007 as a feature film. He even considered casting Pakistani stars like Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, and Imran Abbas for the project. However, those plans were dropped after a 2016 unofficial ban on Pakistani artists in India.
Eventually, the cast was led by Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal, and Taha Shah Badussha— each playing a part in Bhansali's grand vision for the screen.

Ektaa Kapoor REACTS to Anurag Kashyap's ‘saas bahu' dig; calls it ‘classist' and ‘dumb': ‘Artists who talk of...'

Ektaa Kapoor has fired back strongly at filmmaker Anurag Kashyap for his recent remarks about 'saas bahu' TV dramas. The producer, known for creating some of India's most popular family soaps, called Kashyap 'classist' for looking down on these shows. Ektaa defends her daily soaps Ektaa responded strongly to Anurag's dig. Taking to her Instagram stories, she wrote, 'Ur so dumb... saying this put u on an advantage 'I'm smarter cooler' but naaaaaaaa! Darling how about gracious!!! N self aware?????? An art a lot of artists don't have!' She added, ''Saas bahu' n their impact on Indian masses (how women got a voice in mass India) is well documented by a prestigious Chicago research! But artists who talk of an inclusive world are actually more classist.' Ektaa didn't stop there. Without naming anyone, she wrote, 'We must do away with this 'U can't sit with us we r better' attitude for democracy n fair play! Love n light to all (sic).' What started it all? The entire row began after Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos appeared on Nikhil Kamath's podcast and spoke about launching Netflix in India. Reflecting on the decision, he said he would have done things differently. According to Ted, starting the platform in India with the series 'Sacred Games' may not have been the right move, and something 'more populist' might have worked better. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo Anurag Kashyap lashes out Anurag Kashyap, who directed and produced 'Sacred Games', did not take the comment lightly. In a fiery Instagram post, he criticised Ted's remarks and took a swipe at him. He wrote, 'He should have started with Saas Bahu.. he would have done well. Which he is doing now (sic).' Taking it a step further, Anurag added, 'I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling but @tedsarandos is the definition of dumb is what I didn't know. Good to discover that. The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 3 is all set to return on Netflix India in a few weeks. And this time, the team has a big surprise for the audience with Navjot Singh Sidhu's confirmed to join the Kapil Sharma show. The official announcement for the same has been done with a fun video where Kapil Sharma is seen telling judge Archana Puran Singh that she is getting a big surprise from the OTT platform for delivering two hit seasons. An ambitious Archana is seen expecting a house, a car, or maybe some equity shares of Netflix, but her excitement dies down as she sees Navjot Singh Sidhu make a poetic entry to the show. With The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 3 promo, it has been confirmed that both Archana Puran Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu will be co-judging the show. Also Read: Archana Puran Singh reacts to Kapil Sharma's gag about her getting paid to laugh: 'I am paid to enjoy the show' A post shared by Netflix India (@netflix_in) Talking about the new entry on the show, Kapil Sharma said in a statement, 'We had promised that every year our family will grow, and I'm so excited to have Sidhu paaji part of the family along with Archana ji to enjoy all the chutkules, the shayaris and masti. The mahaul is set, so stay tuned because this season jokes aur laughter dono ho gayein hain triple!!!' Navjot Singh Sidhu said in a statement, 'Coming to The Great Indian Kapil Show feels like I'm coming home again. It is a home run for me. We heard the voice of the people, so many fans and well-wishers who loved our interactions and wanted to see more. I'm delighted that Netflix has managed to bring this bouquet of beautiful people together, and we will bloom this season for audiences worldwide. A smile doesn't cost you a cent, but it is worth millions of dollars, and The Great Indian Kapil show is an instrument of god's goodwill to bring happiness to mankind – honoured to be part of it again.' Sidhu's exit from the show took place in 2019 after the cricketer-politician took serious heat over his comments following the Pulwama terror attack. Sony — where Kapil's show was telecast at that time — sacked him and hired Archana Puran Singh to host the show. Ever since then, the show and its cast has jumped platforms and names but Archana has stayed on as the judge. She often takes hits from the show's cast for earning money for 'just laughing' but responds with grace. The same treatment, however, was never meted out to Sidhu. The two judges on the show will make this season an interesting mix. The new season of the Great Indian Kapil Show starts streaming from 21st June, 2025.
