Dr. Ibrahim El Serafi, Associate Professor and Head of Basic Medical Sciences Department at the College of Medicine, Ajman University, has been awarded the Thumbay International Research Grant 2025 to fund his research project titled: 'The role of Vorinostat and CID1067700 in skin regeneration and wound healing'.
The project focuses on testing the effects of these two drug compounds on stem cells to determine their ability to stimulate differentiation into keratinocytes, cells responsible for forming the skin.
Through this research, the investigator aims to contribute to developing effective and innovative therapeutic solutions for chronic wounds.
The project objectives include testing the effects of Vorinostat and CID1067700 on the in vitro differentiation of stem cells into keratinocyte-like cells, examining their potential genotoxic effects during the differentiation process, evaluating the most effective treatment using a skin wound model in Sprague Dawley rats, and analysing the toxicity and side effects of the treatment on the animal model.
Chronic wounds — particularly those resulting from diabetes, burns, or venous insufficiency — pose major global healthcare challenges, often leading to serious complications such as infections, amputations, and reduced quality of life.
This project aims to develop innovative therapeutic solutions by using epigenetic modifiers to enhance the differentiation of stem cells into keratinocytes, which may represent a breakthrough in wound healing treatments.
The research also includes the development of patient-specific skin grafts and a topical treatment that could serve as a safe, effective, and accessible alternative for individuals with non-healing wounds, reducing reliance on traditional skin grafting techniques, which often involve donor sites and may lead to further complications.
Advances in Personalised and Regenerative Medicine
This project opens new horizons for advanced clinical applications, including developing autologous skin grafts that reduce the risk of immune rejection, and formulating a topical drug containing Vorinostat or CID1067700 as a non-surgical treatment for chronic wounds.

Ajman University (AU) hosted the 8th edition of its flagship Research Day, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and national development. The annual event, organised by the Deanship of Research and Graduate Studies, brought together faculty members, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and distinguished representatives from government and private sectors to explore how applied research can support the UAE's long-term strategic ambitions. Held at Ajman Saray Hotel, the event showcased interdisciplinary student research projects addressing real-world challenges in areas such as urban planning, public health, technology, design, and behavioral science. Among the many impactful contributions, students from the College of Engineering and IT explored sustainable freshwater collection systems through condensation technologies. From the College of Architecture, Art, and Design, one project examined how walkable urban design can enhance livability, while another proposed sensory-friendly spaces for children with autism. Marketing and management students analysed green consumer behaviour in the UAE, while projects from the College of Law addressed privacy rights and legal frameworks in digital environments. Medical students explored health access and clinical practices, while researchers in Pharmacy and Health Sciences examined environmental risk factors and pharmaceutical advancements. The College of Dentistry presented innovations in oral care, while students in Humanities, Social Sciences, and Mass Communication tackled behavioural trends, social perceptions, and media narratives. These projects collectively reflect the breadth and depth of Ajman University's research ecosystem, grounded in relevance, rigour, and national impact. Dr. Karim Seghir, Chancellor of Ajman University, stated, 'Research is one of the key pillars of our mission and the cornerstone of our vision to nurture a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy. By organising this event, we have reaffirmed our commitment to fostering creative researchers capable of linking theory with practice and producing knowledge with real social impact.' Achieving the milestones on its way to progress and highlighting in a way to motivate others, the Ajman University has hosted its 2025 Reunion Gala themed 'Together, We Can'. The event was held under the patronage of Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, Chairman of Ajman Executive Council, and Chairman of Ajman University's Board of Trustees. Attended by Dr. Sheikh Majid Bin Saeed Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Ajman Ruler's Court, the event brought together distinguished alumni, strategic partners, and friends of the university to celebrate shared achievements and reaffirm the institution's mission-driven future as a private, non-profit university. The gala reflected the University's commitment to inclusiveness, excellence, innovation, sustainability, and social responsibility — values that mirror the broader aspirations of the UAE. One of the evening's visual highlights was a mesmerising laser show, which unveiled the pillars of the campaign and the University's future-focused vision in a truly dazzling display of light, music, and meaning. In his welcoming address, Dr. Karim Seghir, Chancellor of Ajman University, stated: 'This evening celebrates not only what we've achieved together, but what we are determined to accomplish moving forward. As a non-profit university, every contribution is reinvested directly into students, faculty, and society. We are building not just a university, but a movement for access, excellence, and a better tomorrow.' Dr. Seghir further emphasised: 'Together, we can expand opportunity. Together, we can light the path for those who will, in turn, light the way for others. And I am confident that together, we will.' The University recently achieved major international recognition, ranking among the top 500 universities worldwide and securing the #1 position in the UAE for employer reputation according to the 2025 QS World University Rankings. Ajman University also earned: #1 in the UAE in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, #1 in Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, and #2 in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Mathematics. These results mark AU's rapid ascent in areas that define the future of work and knowledge economies. A central moment of the gala was the Recognition Ceremony, in which the university honoured a select group of partners and donors for their steadfast support and meaningful contributions. The awards were presented by Dr. Sheikh Majid Bin Saeed Al Nuaimi and Dr. Karim Seghir to the following entities, listed in alphabetical order: Ali AlAssi, Al Rostamani Group, AWRostamani Group, Dar Al Ber Society, Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group, Fast Building Contracting, IFFCO, International Charity Organization, and Tiger Group.
