Vancouver Whitecaps sell dynamic midfielder Pedro Vite to LIGA MX side Pumas UNAM

The Vancouver Whitecaps will be without one of their top scorers this weekend as they seek to retake the No. 1 spot in Major League Soccer's Western Conference. The club announced Friday that 23-year-old midfielder Pedro Vite has been transferred to LIGA MX side Pumas UNAM. Terms of the deal were not released, but Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a statement that the club will invest the transfer fee to 'strengthen our roster, for both immediate impact and long-term success' and Vancouver will receive a percentage of any future transfer fees. 'Pedro arrived in Vancouver at 19, living outside of Ecuador for the first time. Year after year, he continued to progress, and this season he's emerged as one of the top midfielders in MLS and a key contributor to his national team,' Schuster said. 'We explored several options with Pedro and, ultimately, we respect his decision. We're grateful for everything he brought to the club and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career.' Vite joined the Whitecaps in October 2021 from Ecuadorian first division side Independiente Del Valle. During his time in Vancouver, he tallied 15 goals and 20 assists in 140 appearances, including five goals and a team-leading six assists across all competitions this year. Last month, he helped Ecuador's national squad qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Vite has been an important part of the Whitecaps this season, midfielder Sebastian Berhalter said Friday. 'He's honestly been amazing,' he said. 'One of the first moments I played with him, I realized, 'Wow, this kid is special.' He wasn't getting the game time, but you could see just his touch and technique on the ball was something I hadn't really played with before.' The move means the 'Caps (12-5-5) will have a hole in their lineup Saturday when they take on San Diego FC (13-7-3) in California. '(Vite's) a guy who can make very difficult things look very easy and I think that he has had a great season so far,' said Jesper Sorensen, Vancouver's head coach. 'Of course we will miss him. We will always miss a good player and a good guy as well. But on the other hand, this is the name of the game and this is how football works. And we will be ready to fill out the spot that he leaves.' Saturday's match will be a battle for best of the West, with expansion side San Diego currently sitting one point ahead of Vancouver and in the No. 1 spot in the MLS Western Conference standings. The stakes were similar back on June 25 when San Diego came to Vancouver for the first-ever matchup between the two sides. The new franchise waltzed away with a 5-3 victory. Milan Iloski scored four goals for the visitors that night, but won't be in the lineup on Saturday. The midfielder left San Diego earlier this week to rejoin Danish Superliga side FC Nordjaelland. Sorensen, for one, isn't disappointed to see Iloski go. 'He was pretty hard on us last time. I'm happy he's not there today,' the coach said with a laugh. 'No matter who (San Diego) play, they all play the same way. Of course it's not the same player they have but they have good players around and they'll also find a replacement that will make things difficult for us.' VANCOUVER WHITECAPS (12-5-5) AT SAN DIEGO FC (13-7-3) Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Saturday, Snapdragon Stadium POTENT OFENCE: San Diego continues to be an offensive juggernaut, leading the league in both goals (46) and assists (55). The team is also second in passes completed (13,731). QUEST FOR 100: Striker Brian White scored his 99th career goal on Wednesday. He leads the 'Caps in scoring this season with 16 goals across all competitions. KEEP IT CLEAN: Vancouver 'keeper Yohei Takaoka leads the league with 10 clean sheets after backstopping the Whitecaps to a 3-0 victory over the Dynamo. ‘Live at The Square' set to energize City Hall Square

The City of Windsor unveiled the long-awaited renovations to City Hall Square on July 13, 2025. (Robert Lothian/CTV News Windsor) Windsor's new City Hall Square is making a splash in its first week. 'You can see behind me every day people are out here enjoying the facility, enjoying the features that we have out here. Kids playing in the fountain, jumping out of the water,' said Michael Chantler, the city's commissioner of Community Services. City Hall Square is a community gathering place that has been used frequently since its launch five days ago. 'It's not just a fountain. It's not just a splash pad. It's not just an ice rink,' Chantler exclaimed. The city has created activations for children. An event celebrating dogs is coming up this weekend. Residents are also encouraged to bring a lawn chair downtown because there will be music in The Square every Friday from now until Oct. 31. 'We are coming up with activations, whether it's the stuff we do with the kids during the day or it's our evening entertainment, like the Live at The Square free concert entertainment that's coming up,' Chantler said. Show times and musical acts can be found on the City of Windsor website. Events like Live at The Square bring people downtown who, in turn, may venture off into the core. There are a lot of events coming up this summer like Downtown Showdown on Ouellette Avenue on July 26, hosted by Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling, which excites downtown business owners. 'It'd be great if we did five days a week,' said Duane Chouinard, owner at Eastwoods, who gets traffic from the Casino and Macassa Bay and appreciates any event or activation the city initiates downtown. 'Anytime there's any type of event, whatever it is, it just brings a lot of people to downtown core.' Kevin Dinardo is bringing an outdoor pole-vaulting event to the riverfront July 25 and 26 near the Macassa Bay. 'It's always good to take some of the events outside of the stadium, put it into an atmosphere where there's going to be general population to get them a little bit more of an experience of, you know, track and field events that they might not see,' Dinardo said. The atmosphere was electric atop the Pelissier parking garage last weekend when Border City Boxing held an event on the roof top with many staying downtown after the show. 'It was incredible,' said Chris MacLeod, chair of the Downtown Windsor BIA. 'It's events like that that change people's perception about downtown.'

Kitchener Rangers announce overagers for next season

The Kitchener Rangers are saying goodbye to two potential overagers as they announce roster updates for the upcoming season. In a news release on Friday, the team announced Jakub Chromiak, Jack Pridham and Christian Humphreys will be joining the blue shirts next season as long as they don't get called up to join NHL teams during training camps this fall. 'All three of these guys were such a big part of our team last year and the possibility of all three returning is a huge boost to our team for this upcoming season,' Mike McKenzie, Kitchener Rangers' general manager, said. 'All three players had options to play in other leagues, but we are thrilled they have chosen to stay in Kitchener for another season and be key veteran members of our team.' However, the announcement also comes with some fond farewells. Chris Grisolia and Cameron Mercer will not be hitting the ice with the Rangers as OHL teams are only allowed to carry three overage players each season. Mercer has been with the team for more than 280 regular and playoff games over the span of four seasons. He is also known for his work off the ice, raising over $17,000 for SickKids through his Mercer's Mission campaign. He was inspired to start the initiative after his brother, Nathan, received emergency brain surgery in 2008. Nathan spent more time at SickKids over the years, undergoing multiple brain surgeries, but is still alive today. 'We would like to thank Cam for the last four years and his dedication to our program,' McKenzie said. 'He was such a popular player around the room and someone that was a pleasure to be around and coach. We will miss Cam but wish him the best of luck in his next chapter.' Meanwhile, Grisolia has been with the team since October 2024 after a trade with the Barrie Colts. He appeared in 55 regular season games and posted ten goals. 'Chris was only here for one season but left a positive mark on our organization with his work ethic and popularity in the dressing room,' McKenzie said. 'We wish Chris the best in the next stop on his hockey journey.'
