Bhool Chuk Maaf OTT update: Bombay HC stalls release of Rajkummar Rao's film

In a significant legal development, the
Bombay High Court
has temporarily blocked the digital release of the Rajkummar Rao-led film
Bhool Chuk Maaf
, ordering that it cannot be streamed on OTT platforms or any other medium until eight weeks have passed following its theatrical debut at
PVR Inox
cinemas.

This interim order came after multiplex giant
PVR Inox
filed a legal challenge, accusing the film's producers—Maddock Films—of breaching a formal agreement. The dispute arose from the producers' last-minute decision to cancel the movie's
theatrical release
and instead announce its OTT premiere for May 16. According to PVR Inox, this abrupt change violated a binding contract signed on May 6, which explicitly stated that the movie would hit theatres across India on May 9, and no online or alternate platform release would take place for eight weeks thereafter.
Representing PVR Inox, senior advocate Dinyar Madon informed the court that Maddock Films had unilaterally terminated the agreement just one day before the planned theatrical launch, without considering the significant promotional investment and logistical arrangements already made by the cinema chain.
Maddock's legal counsel, Venkatesh Dhond, countered by arguing that the 'holdback period' was only applicable if a theatrical release actually occurred—implying that since the producers had canceled the cinema launch, the clause no longer stood.
However, Justice Arif Doctor, who presided over the hearing, acknowledged that PVR Inox had fulfilled its responsibilities under the agreement. The multiplex had not only allocated screens but had also promoted the film and sold advance tickets. The judge noted that such an abrupt cancellation not only disrupted the business operations of the theatre chain but could also potentially tarnish its reputation and consumer trust.
Considering these factors, the High Court issued an interim directive barring Maddock Films from releasing the movie on any platform—digital or otherwise—until the film completes eight weeks of theatrical screening at PVR Inox locations. The matter has now been scheduled for a detailed hearing on June 16, and the court has asked Maddock Films to submit their response in the interim.
About 'Bhool Chuk Maaf'
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Varanasi, the film paints a heartfelt portrait of small-town love, steeped in tradition and dreams. At its core is Ranjan, a starry-eyed romantic whose only ambition is to win the heart of his beloved, Titli Mishra. Determined to make their love story official, Ranjan lands a coveted government job—believing it's the final step toward marrying the girl of his dreams.
As the couple excitedly steps into the whirlwind of wedding preparations, fate takes an unexpected—and surreal—turn. Just when everything seems perfect, Ranjan finds himself trapped in a bizarre and relentless time loop. Each day begins with the same rituals, the same laughter, and the same Haldi ceremony—except only he remembers the repetitions.
Titli, blissfully unaware, lives each day anew, while Ranjan is caught in a lonely, exasperating cycle, reliving the pre-wedding chaos over and over again. What begins as a strange twist of time soon spirals into a battle between love, logic, and destiny, forcing Ranjan to question whether the universe is testing him—or trying to tell him something deeper.

Box office: Coolie (Hindi) collects Rs 18.50 crore in 4 days; Rajinikanth & Lokesh Kanagaraj film scores average results

The Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj film, Coolie: The Powerhouse, has scored average results in its opening weekend in Hindi, faring better than the pre-release expectations. The actioner has collected Rs 18.50 crore over its four day run, and the film stayed consistent around the Rs 4.00 crore mark though the weekend. Coolie opened at Rs 4.25 crore on Thursday, followed by a spike to Rs 6.00 crore on Friday, before settling in at Rs 4.00 crore and Rs 4.25 crore on Saturday and Sunday. The national chains – PVRInox and Cinepolis - have collected Rs 8.30 crore over the four day period, contributing 47 percent to the total business. The numbers are decent in Hindi because Coolie had no expectations, however, the trend through four-day period is not encouraging indicating a not-so-strong hold in business on Monday. Coolie will be looking at a lifetime total in the range of Rs 35 crore to Rs 40 crore, as it has one more week of clean run before facing competition from Param Sundari. The film will end up being the second highest grossing Tamil film dubbed in Hindi after 2.0, surpassing films like Robot, Kabali, Vikram, and Leo among others. Having said that, with a start of Rs 4.25 crore, the Rajinikanth starrer could have hit a bigger number in Hindi, but the mixed reports did no good to the theatrical prospects. Here's a look at day wise collections of Coolie (Hindi) Thursday: Rs 4.25 crore Friday: Rs 6.00 crore Saturday: Rs 4.00 crore Sunday: Rs 4.25 crore Total: Rs 18.50 crore Coolie faced competition from War 2 in Hindi markets, and North India is the only area where the Rajinikanth starrer was trailing behind the YRF Spy Universe film, as it dominated the former in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana. Box Office: War 2 (Hindi) scores underwhelming results in extended opening weekend; Hrithik – NTR film nets Rs 125 crore in 4 days

The Hrithik Roshan and NTR led War 2 has seen sub-par results in its extended opening weekend as the Ayan Mukerji directorial has collected Rs 125 crore over the four-day run in Hindi. The YRF Spy Universe film opened below expectations at Rs 28 crore on a working Thursday, but the 55 percent spike to Rs 45 crore on Independence Day gave some hope. However, the film underperformed with Rs 26 crore each on Saturday and Sunday. Through the weekend, War 2 has collected Rs 60 crore in the top 3 national chains – PVRInox and Cinepolis – contributing about 48 percent to the total business. The remaining business came in from the non-national chains and single screens. War 2 just couldn't gain any momentum over the weekend, and that's a result of the not-so-good audience word of mouth. The film has done the best business in Hindi, as the Telugu version stayed low with 4-day nett business estimated to be around the Rs 42 crore mark. The all India weekend nett falls in the vicinity of Rs 170 crore, and in an ideal world, this should have been done in 2 days flat. War 2 primarily got hit due to multiple factors – ranging from assets not landing right, to the content not leaving a mark – but one must appreciate the production house, Yash Raj Films, as also the leading man Hrithik Roshan for not opting for the malpractices of self-buying tickets to safeguard the opening weekend. In today's world, it's easy to buy tickets in advance as also through the day for managing the perception, but the team of War 2 has stayed away from these gimmicks, accepting the fate with grace. War 2 (Hindi) Opening Weekend Box Office Thursday: Rs 28 crore Friday: Rs 45 crore Saturday: Rs 26 crore Sunday: Rs 26 crore (Estimates) Total: Rs 125 crore
