Bronze statue of Tom Brady to be unveiled before Patriots' exhibition opener
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady left his imprint all over the New England Patriots' record books during his stellar two-decade run with the team. Now, he is set to become the first player in franchise history to be honored with a statue. During a star-studded Patriots Hall of Fame induction last June, at which Brady's No. 12 was also retired by the team, Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced a 12-foot bronze likeness of the quarterback was being commissioned from a local sculptor 'to perpetuate the legendary legacy of the great Tom Brady.' What Kraft promised would be a 'larger than life' ode to Brady will be unveiled on Friday prior to New England's exhibition game against the Washington Commanders. Brady will be on hand for the ceremony, which is scheduled to include remarks by Kraft and an address by Brady to fans, who are being allowed into the plaza in front of Gillette Stadium four hours before the game to accommodate what is expected to be a large crowd. It will be just the latest salute to the player whose jersey still dots the stands at Gillette Stadium five-plus years after he played his final game for New England in 2019. Drafted 199th overall in 2000, Brady rose to become the face of the Patriots dynasty as he led the team to six Super Bowl titles and 17 division championships in 18 seasons as a starter. Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister in contention for Crystal Palace match after recovering from injury
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Alexis Mac Allister will be in Liverpool's squad for Sunday's Community Shield match against Crystal Palace. The Argentina international missed some of Liverpool's preseason preparations when recovering from injury. But he played in the last two friendlies against Yokohama F. Marinos and Atletico Madrid and will be in contention to play some part of the game against Palace at Wembley, coach Arne Slot said. 'He was out for two months I think, or longer because we didn't play him in the last four games of the season. He trained with us since a week now, played 30 minutes, 45 minutes,' Slot said Friday. 'So that's not a situation where you would start a player… play him for 90 minutes. Starting is possible but definitely not for 90 minutes.' The 26-year-old Mac Allister's last competitive game was against Arsenal on May 11. He missed the Premier League champion's last two games of the season. Last month the midfielder said his absence was due to a series of issues, rather than one specific injury. 'It's hard to explain because it's not just one spot that you say, 'OK, we have to focus on this,'' Mac Allister said. 'It's like two or three different things that I've been struggling (with) for a couple of months. 'At the end, we found the solution; we have been working a lot in the gym, on my structure.' Pete Carroll, Geno Smith return to Seattle with Raiders
SEATTLE (AP) — Pete Carroll played a new role in familiar territory Thursday night, with his first preseason game as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders coming against the Seattle Seahawks. The former Seattle coach clearly felt at home before the 23-23 tie, talking with many Seahawks players on the field during warmups and generally being his outgoing, energetic self. 'It was cool to be here. I loved it here,' Carroll said. 'But it didn't translate to something crazy for me. It was just an opportunity to play in a great setting. Thanks to the league for putting us in this game. They figured it out, it was a good idea, and it's been a good one to look forward to.' Carroll said the only time the familiar setting changed the experience was when he caught himself looking for the wrong uniform when watching replays on the video board. 'There were a couple times guys made plays and I'm looking at the screen in the end zone, and I thought it was our guys making plays,' he said. Carroll spent 14 seasons in Seattle, going 137-89-1 and putting together double-digit victories eight times over a nine-year stretch. He was at the helm for some of the most memorable moments in team history, including the 2013 Super Bowl championship with the dominant 'Legion of Boom' defense, before the Seahawks parted ways with him after the 2023 season.
