Russia Says Security Discussions Without Moscow Are "Road To Nowhere"
Russia said on Wednesday that attempts to resolve security issues relating to Ukraine without the participation of Moscow were a "road to nowhere".
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the comments two days after US President Donald Trump hosted Ukraine's president and European leaders for discussions about security guarantees for Ukraine that could help to end the war.
"We cannot agree with the fact that now it is proposed to resolve questions of security, collective security, without the Russian Federation. This will not work," Lavrov said.
"I am sure that in the West and above all in the United States they understand perfectly well that seriously discussing security issues without the Russian Federation is a utopia, it's a road to nowhere."

Lavrov also warned that any move by European states to deploy troops in Ukraine would cross a red line. 'This would be absolutely unacceptable for the Russian Federation,' he said, calling such an initiative 'foreign intervention in part of Ukrainian territory.' The remarks came after Zelenskyy suggested he was prepared to meet Putin, but only once Ukraine had received firm commitments on security. He floated Switzerland, Austria or Turkey as possible venues and even proposed a trilateral format with US President Donald Trump. 'We want to have an understanding of the security guarantees architecture within 7–10 days, and based on that understanding, we aim to hold a trilateral meeting,' Zelenskyy told reporters. Moscow, however, portrayed Zelenskyy's overture as a political ploy. Lavrov pointed out that the Ukrainian leader had previously ruled out talks with Putin, even signing an executive order to that effect. 'Now his proposal is only a tactic, he fears attention to his personality may drop and wants to appear constructive,' Lavrov said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said he had a 'very good conversation' with French President Emmanuel Macron, as the leaders discussed a range of issues including the Russia-Ukraine war and the conflict in West Asia. Taking to X, PM Modi said that the two leaders exchanged views on efforts to get a peaceful resolution of these wars. 'Had a very good conversation with my friend President Macron. Exchanged views on efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and in West Asia. Reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the India-France strategic partnership,' he said. President Macron also shared on X about his discussion with PM Modi. 'We coordinated our positions on the war in Ukraine to move toward a just and lasting peace, with strong guarantees for Ukraine and the security of Europe," he said. In a press release, the Prime Minister's office said that PM Modi received a call on Thursday from Macron. The leaders exchanged views on the ongoing efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and the West Asia region, it said. 574 Drones, 40 Missiles: Russia Hammers Ukraine As Peace Talks Drag
Kyiv: Russia launched one of its biggest aerial attacks of the year on Ukraine, firing 574 drones and 40 ballistic and cruise missiles overnight, the Ukrainian Air Force said Thursday, while a recent diplomatic push to stop the three-year war is trying to gain momentum. The attack mostly targeted western regions of the country, the air force said, where much of the military aid provided by Ukraine's Western allies is believed to be delivered and stored. The strikes killed at least one person and injured 15 others, according to officials. It was Russia's third-largest aerial attack this year in terms of the number of drones fired and the eighth-largest in terms of missiles, according to official figures. Most such Russian attacks have hit civilian areas. The strikes occurred during a renewed U.S.-led effort to reach a peace settlement following Russia's February 2022 invasion of its neighbor. U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week, and at the start of this week hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House. Russia has fired nearly 1,000 long-range drones and missiles at Ukraine since the White House talks. Ukraine and European leaders have accused Putin of stalling in ongoing peace efforts, including Ukraine's proposal of a ceasefire and Zelenskyy's offer to sit down with the Russian leader. The Kremlin has reacted coolly to those possibilities. Zelenskyy condemned the overnight attack, saying it was carried out "as if nothing were changing at all." They reached deep into western Ukraine, near the border with Hungary. Western parts of Ukraine are far from the battlefield's front line in the east and south of the country, where a grinding war of attrition has killed tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides. In the western city of Lviv, one person was killed and three were injured as the attack damaged 26 residential buildings, a kindergarten and administrative buildings, regional head Maksym Kozytskyi wrote on Telegram. The Regional Prosecutor's Office said three Russian cruise missiles with cluster munitions struck the city. A U.S. electronics plant near the Hungarian border was also struck, according to Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine. The Flex factory is one of the biggest American investments in Ukraine, Hunder told The Associated Press by phone. At the moment of impact, 600 nightshift workers were on the premises, and six of them were injured, Hunder said. Russian attacks on Ukraine since it launched its invasion have damaged property belonging to more than half of the chamber's approximately 600 members, he added "The message is clear: Russia is not looking for peace. Russia is attacking American business in Ukraine, humiliating American business," Hunder said. In comments Wednesday that were embargoed until Thursday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine will hold intensive meetings to understand what kind of security guarantees its allies are willing to provide. The details are being hammered out by national security advisers and military officials. The plans will become clearer by the end of next week, Zelenskyy said. He then expects to be ready to hold direct talks with Putin for the first time since the full-scale invasion. The talks could also be conducted in a trilateral format alongside Trump, Zelenskyy said. A venue for the meeting is being discussed, and Switzerland, Austria and Turkey are possibilities, Zelenskyy added.
