Thousands of men shared non-consensual intimate photos on Telegram
Pornography in China is illegal, and conservative social attitudes towards women remain the norm, often reinforced by state media and popular culture.
It comes after a Chinese university expelled a woman this month for "damaging national dignity" over videos posted by a Ukrainian esports player on Telegram suggesting they had been intimate.
The Chinese state-owned 'Southern Daily' reported this week that a woman discovered photos of her taken unknowingly had been shared in a Telegram forum with over 100,000 users, mostly Chinese men.
Members of the forum also shared photos of their girlfriends, ex-girlfriends and wives, according to a commentary in the 'Guangming Daily', an outlet backed by China's ruling communist party.
Revelations of the group have sparked widespread outcry online.
"We are not... 'content' that can be randomly uploaded, viewed and fantasised about," read one comment on Instagram-like Red Note.
"We can no longer remain silent. Because next could be me, or it could be you."
A related hashtag has been viewed more than 230 million times on social media platform Weibo since Thursday.
The largest group, called "Mask Park", has since been taken down, but smaller spinoffs remain active, according to women contacted by 'Southern Daily'
Telegram encrypts its users' messages and is banned in China, but it is accessible using a virtual private network.
"The sharing of nonconsensual pornography is explicitly forbidden by Telegram's terms of service and is removed whenever discovered," Telegram said in a statement sent to AFP.
"Moderators proactively monitor public parts of the platform and accept reports in order to remove millions of pieces of harmful content each day, including nonconsensual pornography."
The incident has drawn comparisons to a case in South Korea dubbed "Nth Room", in which a man blackmailed dozens of women into taking sexually explicit videos and sold them on Telegram.
Online, Chinese women have detailed their own experiences of being filmed and photographed by men in public.
"What criminals consider 'regular' for them may be nightmares that countless women can't escape for the rest of their lives," one woman said, sharing an encounter on Douyin.
Chinese police have cracked down on illegal filming, arresting hundreds of people in 2022 over clandestine surveillance.
But women's rights are sensitive territory in China -- over the last decade, authorities have suppressed almost every form of independent feminist activism.
#MeToo activist Sophia Huang Xueqin was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of "inciting subversion of state power" after she became a symbol of the country's stalled feminist movement.
Chinese authorities have yet to publicly announce any action against the Telegram group.
But the 'Guangming Daily' commentary urged "accountability" for the organisers of the Telegram group, and empathy for the people filmed.
Improving law enforcement would "enhance the overall sense of security, free women from the fear of being spied on and make privacy boundaries a truly untouchable red line", it said.

Cyberattack disrupts Aeroflot flights in Russia
MOSCOW: A cyberattack on Russia's national airline Aeroflot disrupted 42 flights on Monday, marking the first major aviation IT breach since the Ukraine conflict began. Officials confirmed the incident, with Ukrainian hacking group 'Silent Crow' and Belarusian 'Cyber Partisans' claiming responsibility in a joint statement. Russia's state prosecutor's office launched a criminal investigation after flight cancellations at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, Aeroflot's main hub. 'The cause was a failure in Aeroflot's IT system due to a hacking attack,' authorities stated. The hackers claimed to have compromised 7,000 of the airline's servers and threatened to release passenger data. 'We announce the successful completion of a long-term and large-scale operation that resulted in the complete compromise and destruction of the internal IT infrastructure of Aeroflot,' the groups said. Aeroflot assured passengers it was 'working to restore normal operation as quickly as possible.' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the incident alarming, stating, 'We will, of course, clarify the information and wait for an appropriate explanation.' Cyberwarfare accusations have escalated between Russia and Ukraine, with Europol recently dismantling a pro-Russian hacking group accused of targeting Ukraine and its allies. – AFP

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the agreement after chairing the special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia at the Seri Perdana Complex here. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the meeting, which began at 3 pm. Also in attendance were United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing. The US was a co-organiser of the meeting, while China, an observer to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation. 'Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Prime Minister Phumtham have expressed their positions and willingness for an immediate ceasefire and return to normalcy. 'As the current Chair of Asean, Malaysia stands ready to coordinate an observer team to verify and ensure its implementation. 'Malaysia will also consult with fellow Asean member states to participate in the observation effort, reflecting a regional commitment to supporting peace on the ground,' he said at a joint press conference. During the joint press conference, Anwar said Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding, including an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, with effect from 24:00 hours (local time) on July 28. 'This is a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security,' he said. He added that Thailand and Cambodia will hold an informal meeting of regional commanders on July 29 at 7 am, followed by a meeting with Defence Attachés led by the Asean Chair, subject to mutual agreement. He added that Thailand and Cambodia will convene a meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on Aug 4 to be hosted by Cambodia. Anwar said Thailand and Cambodia also agreed to resume direct communications between both prime ministers, foreign ministers, and defence ministers. He added that the foreign ministers and defence ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand have been instructed to develop a detailed mechanism for the implementation, verification, and reporting of the ceasefire. 'This mechanism will serve as a foundation for sustained peace and accountability,' he said. Anwar said the meeting reaffirms the shared resolve of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand to uphold the principles of international law, peaceful co-existence, and multilateral cooperation in the pursuit of a just and lasting resolution to the situation. He said US President Donald J. Trump has been in contact with the leaders of both countries, urging the leaders to find a peaceful solution to the situation. He added that the Chinese side had kept close contact with Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and relevant countries to actively promote dialogue, ceasefire, and restoring peace. 'The presence and collaboration of all parties underscore a shared commitment to peace, dialogue, and regional stability,' he said. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. The latest round of hostilities erupted on July 24. Armed clashes have been reported along Cambodia's northern border region, with fatalities on both sides. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
