IKEA turns desktops into digital showrooms with ‘Iconic Outdoors'
Outdoor season is officially here, and with it comes the search for the perfect outdoor furnishings. Gardens, balconies, patios, terraces, and campout spots are all waiting to be transformed into inviting spaces. Al-Futtaim IKEA decided to take a fresh approach to inspiring customers – by bringing its outdoor collection to a place where people already spend much of their time: their computer desktops.
Through its digital campaign 'Iconic Outdoors,' Al-Futtaim IKEA transformed its entire outdoor collection into downloadable desktop icons, available on its website. Instead of traditional product showcases, the campaign turned IKEA furniture into playful, interactive design elements, allowing users to furnish their digital landscapes just as they would in real life.
'IKEA is already well known in the UAE, so we asked ourselves, 'What else can we furnish?' and we landed on where people spend most of their time – their desktop,' says Carla Klumpenaar, General Manager of Marketing and Communications at Al-Futtaim IKEA UAE, Qatar, Egypt, and Oman. 'While the primary goal was awareness, the campaign's interactive nature naturally encouraged engagement. By allowing users to deconstruct, recreate, and play with the campaign visuals, we gave them full control over the experience, turning the campaign into a creative, hands-on activity.'
The campaign launched with three videos, each furnishing a different scenic wallpaper – a desert campout, a beach, and a grassy plain. The digital-first initiative allowed users to replace standard folder icons with miniature IKEA outdoor products, reinforcing the idea that the brand can help turn any outdoor space into a retreat. The experience extended to social media, where Al-Futtaim IKEA uploaded the outdoor icons to GIPHY, enabling users to create virtual setups on Instagram Stories. A competition further encouraged engagement, with three winners having their designs showcased on digital screens inside IKEA stores.

'Iconic Outdoors was all about making IKEA the first choice for outdoor furniture in a way that stood out,' Klumpenaar explains. 'Engagement was measured through downloads of the icons and user-generated setups. This unique and interactive approach ensured IKEA stayed top of mind for outdoor furniture.'
The campaign also revealed some interesting insights. 'The NÄMMARÖ collection remains a fan favourite—even in digital form. It's our most popular outdoor collection, and it's the one most people seemed to opt for when furnishing with the icons,' says Klumpenaar. 'Another interesting takeaway was the lack of pattern in the types of backgrounds people chose for their visuals. We got gardens, balconies, public parks, beaches, and some images chosen off Google. People were freestyling with it, which was really fun to see.'
By transforming digital spaces into interactive brand experiences, Al-Futtaim IKEA took a playful yet strategic approach to outdoor season marketing. The campaign didn't just showcase furniture—it encouraged creativity, engagement, and personalisation, turning the simple act of browsing into an immersive experience.
Once users had designed their dream outdoor setup on screen, the natural next step was to bring that vision to life in their own homes. And, as IKEA cleverly reminds us, once your desktop retreat is perfectly furnished, it might be time to shut your laptop and step outside for real.

SRTA launches proactive plan for 5600 trips during Eid
Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, the head of the SRTA, highlighted the importance of being well-prepared during holidays. He noted that during the Eid al-Adha holiday in 2025, which runs from June 5 to 8, there will be a noticeable rise in public transport users. To handle this, the SRTA has made plans to operate 180 buses on various routes, aiming to complete around 5,600 trips over the four days. During peak times, buses will come every 5 minutes instead of the usual 45-minute wait. This means shorter waiting times and more convenience for everyone traveling. The authority is committed to making travel easy for people visiting family or exploring popular destinations, both within the emirate and outside it. They are also increasing staff at busy bus stations, especially the Jubail Bus Station, which will be open from early morning until late at night to accommodate the larger number of passengers expected during this busy holiday. Regular comprehensive trips The Authority has improved bus services in Sharjah City for the Eid holiday, making travel easier for everyone. They are running a total of 1,144 bus trips each day across 12 different routes, using 104 buses that connect to 543 stops around the city. Al-Othmani pointed out that these efforts are part of a plan to create a well-rounded public transport system that meets the growing need for travel during busy times like holidays. He noted that Route 22 will not be in service during the Eid holiday because the Souq Al Haraj market is closed. To make things easier for passengers, they have made some changes, including quicker arrival times and more ticket sales points at bus stations and inside buses, to minimize delays and crowding. To manage passenger flow, especially at the Jubail station, the teams have stepped up their preparations. They have increased the number of staff on duty and are providing the necessary support to ensure smooth operations. They are also allowing people to book bus tickets in advance and are keeping a close eye on how things are running to maintain a high level of service. Maritime transport During the Eid Al Adha holiday, there will be a special boat service operating between Sharjah and Dubai. Abdul Aziz Al Jarwan, who is in charge of transport at the local authority, announced that there will be four daily trips. These boats will leave from the Aquarium Station in Sharjah and arrive at Al Ghubaiba Station in Dubai, working together with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. The trips will run from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a boat leaving every two hours. Each journey will take about 35 minutes. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at the station at least 15 minutes before their departure to ensure a smooth boarding process. This service is designed to provide more transportation options for everyone and help connect different types of transport. Promoting tourism Al Jarwan shared that the Authority is working closely with the Omani transport company, Mwasalat, to run international route 203. This route connects Sharjah with Muscat, the capital of Oman, and offers two flights each day. This service is expected to encourage tourism between the two countries, especially during the Eid holidays. Passengers can board at Jubail station and travel to Al Athaiba station, making stops along the way. Tickets can be purchased online through Mwasalat Oman's website or at their service points. Public engagement Al Jarwan mentioned that during the Eid holiday, a special call center will be available 24 hours a day to help people book taxis. This includes different types of vehicles like regular taxis, family-sized cars, options for women, vehicles for those with special needs, and electric cars. You can make reservations by phone, through a smartphone app, or by visiting a website. The call center keeps an eye on all the bookings to make sure taxis arrive as fast as possible. It also welcomes feedback from the public regarding bus and taxi services, helps with reports of lost bags, and answers questions about the services offered across the emirate, including Sharjah City and other regions. He highlighted that the call center plays a vital role in connecting with the community, gathering and analyzing feedback to improve services in the future.

Turkey delivers T129 Atak helicopters to Somalia
Turkey has ramped up its defence support to Somalia in its fight against al-Shabab militant group this week, following a phone call between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Somali counterpart on Saturday. Sources familiar with the issue told Middle East Eye that Ankara delivered three T129 Atak attack helicopters to the Somali government this week. Ankara also simultaneously handed over two utility helicopters to the Somali navy, as part of a defence agreement signed between the two governments in February 2024, which mandated Ankara to establish a naval force for Mogadishu. Turkey has been training several Somali pilots to operate Atak helicopters for the past year. The shipment of the helicopters was delivered after the pilots completed their final stage of training. Open-source data shows that around six Turkish A400M and Qatari C-17A transport aircraft have arrived in Mogadishu over the past week, potentially transporting the helicopters. MEE has reached out to Turkey's defence ministry for a comment. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters 'The delivery of the Atak helicopters to Somalia is an indication that Ankara is not only aiming to transfer weapons but also to build up an integrated war capacity for Somalia,' said one of the sources familiar with the shipment. During the phone call on Saturday, Erdogan told Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud that Turkey supports Somalia's vision of development through democracy. Erdogan also affirmed that Turkey's support to Somalia in counter-terrorism efforts would continue and be further expanded, according to a statement released by the Turkish presidency. The timing of Turkey's military aid suggests it aims to stabilise Somalia ahead of elections planned for 2026, which would be held through direct voting instead of tribal electoral system. Somalia has faced a resurgence of al-Shabab attacks in recent months. The group, which aims to topple the government, has intensified its militant campaign in the country. Al-Shabab has made significant gains in central Somalia, notably capturing villages south of the capital Mogadishu last month. However, the group made similar advances in previous years, later abandoning its positions due to military pressure from Somali forces. Unprecedented military support Middle East Eye reported in April that Ankara has boosted its military presence in Mogadishu, doubling its troop numbers in the country to over 500. These forces are tasked with protecting and maintaining the Turkish military base, Turksom, as well as operating armed drones and securing Mogadishu's ports. How Somalia-Turkey defence deal torpedoed a rival UAE agreement Read More » Although Turkish TB2 Bayraktar drones were already in operation, Ankara has recently transported two Akinci drones to Somalia. These drones, capable of flying at high altitudes for extended periods, are considered more effective against al-Shabab due to their advanced night vision and 24-hour operational capabilities. Turkey's unprecedented increase in military support - at a time when the US is scaling back its assistance to Somalia - signals Ankara's intent to prevent a power vacuum in the country. While the US has doubled its air strikes targeting Islamic State affiliates in Somalia this year, it also cut funding in March to the country's elite Danab unit, a force that has played a crucial role in the fight against al-Shabab. Turkey has maintained a significant presence in Mogadishu since Erdogan's first visit to Somalia in 2011, which was conducted as part of a humanitarian mission. Since then, the relationship has deepened into a comprehensive commercial and security partnership. Last year, Ankara also signed an energy exploration and drilling agreement with Somalia, which has led to Turkey sending technical exploration ships to the Somali coast. The exploration data has not yet been publicly revealed. However, during televised remarks on Monday, Erdogan said that 'good news' on energy would be forthcoming in due time. This has led to speculation in Ankara that the announcement may be related to Somalia's energy resources.
