Salman Ali Agha in line to become all-format captain for Pakistan
Besides the change in captaincy, the board will also be announcing the formation of an "observatory" committee after Eid holidays, a concept meant to keep a close watch on cricket developments including in the national team and forward recommendations to the board's chairman.
A source in the board said that former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed and ex-pacer Sikander Bakht had been called to Lahore for a meeting.
"The two were informed about the decision to form the observatory committee and offered positions on it," the source said.
"Some other players will also be on this committee." He said PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, after discussions with his close aides including new white ball head coach Mike Hesson, is also considering redefining the role of the national selection committee.
"Either there will be changes in the current selection committee which would continue to work with the Pakistan team management or a new selection set-up would be announced with prime focus on looking and finding talent from domestic and age group cricket," the source said.
Naqvi, the source added, wanted to see things move forward with the right people in the right positions and with the coach and captain given powers to select the teams.
There is also a move to give more responsibility to Salman Ali Agha who is currently the national T20 captain and the board is contemplating replacing Shan Masood as the Test skipper when they announce the new head coach of the red ball format.
Pakistan's next Test assignment, which is their first in the ICC World Test Championship new cycle, will be a two-match home series against South Africa later this year.

'Pakistan's stance is outstanding': Sarfaraz Ahmed supports PCB's decision to skip India for Asia Cup 2025
Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has backed PCB's decision not to send the team to India for the Asia Cup 2025, which will now be held in the UAE due to political tensions. However, the blockbuster India vs Pakistan clash will still go ahead as planned without any objections from the BCCI or PCB. read more Asia Cup 2025 will be hosted in September and played in T20 format. Image: PTI Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has supported the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) decision not to send the national team to India for the ACC Men's Asia Cup 2025. The tournament, which will be played in the T20 format, is now set to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) next month. The Asia Cup 2025 was originally planned to be hosted by India. However, due to political tensions between India and Pakistan, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) shifted it to a neutral venue in the UAE. PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi is the current president of the Asian governing body. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Sarfaraz Khan backs PCB Speaking to the media at a private event, Sarfaraz praised PCB's stand and said that they did the right thing in deciding not to send a team to India. 'Pakistan's stance for the Asia Cup is outstanding. The Asia Cup is happening in the UAE, so Pakistan's initiative was best,' Sarfaraz was quoted as saying on Geo TV. The previous Asia Cup in 2023 was played in the ODI format and was originally supposed to be hosted by Pakistan. But after the BCCI refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan, the tournament followed a hybrid model, with India's matches being played in Sri Lanka. Pakistan also travelled to Sri Lanka to face India, and the final took place there as well. India won the title by beating the home team in the summit clash. A few months later, Pakistan still travelled to India for the 2023 Cricket World Cup in October-November. However, when India again refused to tour Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, the PCB decided they would not send their team to India until at least 2027. This decision has also influenced their approach towards the Asia Cup 2025 venue change. The Asia Cup will be held in the UAE from September 9 to September 28. The blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan will be played on September 14.

Clive Lloyd Fears Two-Tier WTC Could Leave WI Stuck In 2nd Tier For '100 Years'
Last Updated: Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd raised concerns about the proposed two-tier ICC World Test Championship. Former West Indies (WI) captain Clive Lloyd expressed concerns about the proposed two-tier system for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), noting that the team is 'just two years out of being in that group for 100 years". WI cricket administrators are wary of the potential introduction of the two-tier WTC system and are hoping to influence its implementation, as stated by Cricket West Indies (CWI) chief executive Chris Dehring. 'All of that we have a role to play in, we have a seat at the table at the ICC," Dehring remarked during a press conference organized by ESPNCricinfo following CWI's emergency meeting with past team legends. This meeting was held after WI's dismissal for 27 runs, the second-lowest Test total ever, in the third Test against Australia last month. 'We have to just stay abreast as close as possible to all the changes that could happen, position ourselves, hedging our bets so to speak, to make sure we are in there as West Indies cricket, no matter which way the wind blows and try to take advantage of it," Dehring added. Last month, the International Cricket Council (ICC) established a working group, led by former New Zealand cricketer Roger Twose, to explore, among other things, improvements to the WTC before the 2025-27 cycle. The two-tier system was a significant topic of discussion during the ICC's annual conference in July. Twose, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) representative on the ICC Board, is expected to make recommendations to the board. The debate over a two-tier WTC has been ongoing since before the WTC became a proper league-based tournament with a title clash. This issue has proven divisive among ICC Full Members who have the privilege of playing Tests. In all WTC campaigns thus far, WI has finished eighth out of nine teams, securing only 10 wins in 39 Tests, with 23 losses and 6 draws. Lloyd, who attended the meeting along with legends such as Brian Lara and Viv Richards, pointed out the distribution of ICC funds to member boards. He argued that WI deserves financial consideration despite their declining standards over the years, citing their status as a top team from the 1970s to the 1980s and a highly competitive unit in the 1990s and 2000s. What Did Clive Lloyd Say? 'We have to look at what is happening at the ICC with the shareout of the money. India, Australia and England get 180 million and West Indies will get 80 million like Bangladesh and Afghanistan, and we are just two years out of being in that group for 100 years," Lloyd said. 'To me, it is not right. We have to stand up. We have to go to the ICC and ask for special dispensation. Because when we were in the ascendancy, and we were playing so well, everyone wanted to play with us." 'We were playing Australia very often, with England very often, and when we went to Pakistan or India, getting millions of people [to the grounds]. We need to get a better share of the pie, because we were the cash cows for a long time. And we need to get some of that. I am hoping the board follows up on that recommendation where we can be adequately given the money that is needed," he concluded. view comments Location : Antigua & Barbuda First Published: August 12, 2025, 17:23 IST News cricket Clive Lloyd Fears Two-Tier WTC Could Leave WI Stuck In 2nd Tier For '100 Years' Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
