Celebrating 10 years, Reedy Reels Film Festival showcases region's independent filmmaking

Yahoo27-03-2025

A celebration of regional and local independent filmmakers returns to Greenville's West End with the 10-year anniversary of the 2025 Reedy Reels Film Festival.
The South Carolina Children's Theatre will host the three-day festival March 28-30 that showcases independently produced films and features artist workshops, an opening night VIP party, and genre-based awards for 30-plus motion pictures. The theatre is located at 153 Augusta St.
'These creators pour their heart, soul, and finances into bringing their artistic visions to life," said Matt Foster, co-founder of Reedy Reels. "Our festival engages the community and creates exposure for local and student filmmakers, providing them with a platform they would not otherwise have.'
This year's festival will include films from Richard Rossi and Frank Sanza. Rossi's movie titled "Lucy & the Lake Monster" was co-written alongside retired Greenville teacher Kelly Tabor. Sanza is best known for his film, The Short Game, produced by his Delaware-based Slingshot17 Productions.
Reedy Reels Film Festival will also feature South Carolina-based filmmakers Destiny Macon, Yasmin J. Lee, Clemson professor David Donar, Joy Stamp, and Nathan Maze, among others.
"For 10 years, you, the incredible Greenville community, have embraced the magic of independent cinema, turning Reedy Reels into a vibrant platform for storytelling and artistic expression," Foster added.

Throughout the weekend, attendees can spend full days at screenings featuring various categories, including drama, comedy, horror, animation, documentary, and student-made films.
In addition, the Reedy Reels will give aspiring filmmakers and other festival-goers the opportunity to interact with industry professionals during workshops.
The festival concludes with 13 awards presented across multiple categories. Among the awards are Best Feature Film, Best Documentary, Best College Student Film, a People's Choice Award, and The Reedy Reels Film of Distinction Award.
Tickets can be purchased for individual screening sessions, entire weekend access, and category-based film viewing. The cost ranges from $10-$120. All tickets can be confirmed and purchased on Eventbrite.com.

Going to Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final? What to know about pregame entertainment

The Stanley Cup Final series between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers has shifted to Sunrise for the next two games of the best-of-7 series on Monday and Thursday. And beyond the entertainment that should take place on the ice — the first two games have been thrillers, with Game 1 going to overtime (4-3 Edmonton win) and Game 2 going to double overtime (5-4 Florida win) — there will be plenty of excitement and entertainment at Amerant Bank Arena leading up to Game 3's 8 p.m. start time on Monday. Another one While there is no concert outside the arena like there was for Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup Final last year, the Panthers announced Monday afternoon that DJ Khaled will perform in the arena both pregame and during the first intermission. It's the second consecutive year Khaled has been part of Florida's Stanley Cup Final festivities. He performed outside the arena ahead Game 2 in last season's Cup Final. It's also the second time this postseason the Panthers will have an in-arena performance midgame. Cedric Gervais performed during the first intermission of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final against the Carolina Hurricanes. Adebayo on the drum Meanwhile, Miami Heat star center Bam Adebayo is scheduled to bang the drum pregame prior to opening faceoff. He's the latest big name from South Florida to get things started before a game this playoffs. The running list of those who have banged the drum this postseason: ▪ First round vs Tampa Bay Lightning: Inter Miami midfielder Banjamin Cremaschi (Game 3) and Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith (Game 4) ▪ Second round vs Toronto Maple Leafs: Boca Raton-based social media personalities A.J. and Big Justice, former Panthers defenseman Keith Yandle (Game 4) and former Marlins catcher Charles Johnson (Game 6) ▪ Eastern Conference final vs Carolina Hurricanes: rapper Trick Daddy (Game 3) and Dolphins defensive lineman Zach Sieler (Game 4) Rally towels take jabs at previous opponents For every home game this postseason, the Panthers have laid out rally towels for fans to wave throughout the game. Each one generally has a theme or saying that fits into messaging the Panthers have had all season. For Game 3 on Monday, the saying is 'Rats Rule,' featuring a rat with a hockey stick and helmet and a Florida crest on its chest in front of a shield. The Panthers have embraced the rat throughout basically the franchise's entire history, going back to the Year of the Rat in 1996 when they went on to reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time. It's become even more ingrained this year with Florida's aggressive style of play, led by agitators Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand. But look closer at the rat itself and you'll notice the logos of the three teams Florida has knocked out in the playoffs to reach the Cup Final for a third consecutive year. A lightning bolt on the rat's left leg. A maple leaf on the rat's right ear. A hurricane flag on the knob of the stick. They're subtle, but give a reminder of the path Florida has taken in its quest to repeat as champions. Getting to the arena For those parking at Amerant Bank Arena, the parking gates open at 5 p.m. and doors to the arena open at 6:30 p.m. Parking is $75 per car.

Papa Johns fan-favorite is now part of permanent menu. Here's what to know

A Papa Johns fan favorite is back — and it's here to stay. The beloved Shaq-A-Roni pizza is now available year-round as a full-time menu item, the Atlanta-based pizza chain announced June 5. The brand teamed up with former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal to launch the extra-large pie as a limited-time item in 2020, and it has made several appearances since then. For $15.99, the 16-inch pizza features more than a half pound of cheese and extra pepperoni, according to Papa Johns website. It's then cut into eight large slices. 'The Shaq-a-Roni isn't just a pizza — it's a slam dunk,' O'Neal, a Papa Johns franchisee, said in a news release. 'I'm pumped that it's now here to stay. It's big, it's delicious, and it brings people together — just like pizza should.' The NBA Hall of Famer owns nine Papa Johns franchises in the Atlanta area and has served on the company's board of directors since 2019, according to O'Neal is also a brand ambassador for the pizza chain. Additional information wasn't immediately available. Find your nearest Papa Johns here.

Indie band's singer names ‘best venue in America' — and it's not in New England

Wilderado guitarist Tyler Wimpee has played tons of venues with his band, but one stands out among the rest. The indie rock trio officially kicked off their tour in April and already made a splash at a rainy Boston Calling last month. The band is set to play Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, on June 12 before a small string of headlining shows. While Wimpee told MassLive that 'it's a huge deal' to play a music festival, he's most excited to get back to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, when the band opens for The Revivalists this fall. 'They asked us to come play Red Rocks with them, and it's going to be hard to beat that night,' Wimpee said before revealing why. 'We've gotten lucky enough to play there twice, once with one of our good friends, Mt. Joy,' the musician said. 'It's the best venue in America, arguably.' Wilderado, an Oklahoma-based band — which also consists of lead singer Max Rainer and drummer Justin Kila — is riding high off its recent success. The band's song 'Higher Than Most,' which came off their positively reviewed sophomore album 'Talker,' recently hit the Top 20 on the Alternative Radio chart. Wilderado performed the hit single on CBS Saturday Morning in January before announcing a fall headlining tour. The band will also serve as the supporting act for The Head and The Heart this summer and open for The Revivalists at Red Rocks on Oct. 9. 'We've been opening for bands that we've grown up listening to and love,' Wimpee told MassLive at Boston Calling. 'The Head in the Heart specifically is one that we were fans of before the band (Wilderado) even existed, and so it feels like a full-circle moment for Max and I to be able to go and open for them and share a stage with them.' Wilderado formed in 2015 after Rainer and Wimpee met while attending Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The band was initially named Bird Dog, but was forced to rebrand after getting a pre-cease and desist order from another band using the same name. The band ' suggested that we either do a battle of the bands for the name, or we change our name. And for some reason, we just decided we didn't want to do the battle of the bands thing, and we just changed our name,' Wimpee said. Wilderado is now named after a small town in the Texas panhandle called Wildorado, which has no complaints about the Tulsa trio's title. 'Their school district is really supportive and we're supportive of the Wildorado Mustangs,' Wimpee said. After Bonnaroo, Wilderado will headline shows from June 21 to July 29 before joining The Head and the Heart's tour on July 31. The band will usher in the fall with another string of headlining shows before joining The Revivalists as the last stop on their 2025 tour.
