Pakistan interior minister denies attending anti-China function in US
News reports this week stated Naqvi attended an event in Washington by the New Federal State of China (NFSC), a political movement opposed to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), during his ongoing trip to the US.
China is a major ally and investor in Pakistan that has pledged over $65 billion in investment in road, infrastructure and development projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) infrastructure project.
'This is absolute propaganda, neither have I attended any anti-Chinese state function nor did I go there,' he said.
"I attended a function by Gunster [Strategies] which they tried to link it as an anti-China event," the minister added, referring to the international public relations firm, Gunster Strategies.
The Pakistani interior minister said the main purpose of his visit to the US was to formulate a comprehensive plan with American politicians to combat 'terrorism.'
'See the main purpose of my visit this time [to the US] was to make a comprehensive plan against terrorism with the politicians here,' Naqvi said.
'The terrorism that we are suffering is not just our fight, it is everyone's fight,' he added.
The interior minister said that though 2023 and 2024 were 'bad years' for Pakistan as far as militancy was concerned, those who took up arms against the state would be defeated.
Pakistan has faced a surge in militant attacks in its western provinces bordering Afghanistan since November 2022, ever since its truce with the Pakistani Taliban broke down. Islamabad blames Afghan rulers for providing sanctuaries to militants to launch attacks against Pakistan, charges the Taliban government vehemently denies.
Islamabad and Washington have shared a complicated history when it comes to bilateral ties. Both countries shared close defense and security cooperation in the past, particularly during the Cold War after the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and post-September 11, 2001 attacks.
However, more recently, US officials criticized Pakistan for not sufficiently supporting their military efforts against the Taliban following the 9/11 attacks. Islamabad denies sheltering Taliban fighters and helping them regain control of Afghanistan in August 2021.

The co-founder of a pro-Palestinian campaign group on Wednesday won her bid to bring a legal challenge against the British government's decision to ban the group under anti-terrorism laws. Huda Ammori, who helped found Palestine Action in 2020, asked London's High Court to give the go-ahead for a full challenge to the group's proscription, which was made on the grounds it committed or participated in acts of terrorism. Dozens of people have been arrested for holding placards purportedly supporting the group since the ban, and Ammori's lawyers say people expressing support for the Palestinian cause have also been subject to increased scrutiny from police. However, Britain's interior minister Yvette Cooper has said violence and criminal damage have no place in legitimate protest and that Palestine Action's activities – including breaking into a military base and damaging two planes – justify proscription. Israel has repeatedly denied committing abuses in its war in Gaza, which began after Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel from Gaza on October 7, 2023.

Punjab, Beijing review protection of Chinese nationals in eastern Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi, the home secretary of Pakistan's Punjab, met Chinese Consul General Zhao Shiren on Wednesday to discuss security arrangements for Chinese nationals in the eastern province, the home department said in a statement. The move follows Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's announcement last week to enhance security measures for Chinese nationals across Pakistan, aiming to boost bilateral engagement under the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Beijing has been frustrated by a string of attacks on Chinese nationals in Pakistan since last year. These attacks have mostly been carried out by separatist Baloch militant groups, who accuse Pakistan and China of depriving locals in Balochistan of a share in the province's mineral resources. Beijing has invested in the province with a key port and has mining interests there as well. Both Islamabad and Pakistan deny the allegations. 'The meeting focused on the law and order situation in Punjab and the security arrangements for Chinese nationals,' the provincial home department said in a statement issued after the Shiren-Qazi meeting. One of the attacks included a bombing at the Karachi airport last October that killed two Chinese engineers returning to work at a power plant. Beijing has called on Islamabad to bolster security for its nationals in Pakistan in recent months. Qazi assured Shiren that ensuring the safety of Chinese tourists and officials working on CPEC projects was a top priority, the home department said. 'We are committed to the security and facilitation of all Chinese nationals residing in Punjab,' he added. 'The capacity of the Special Protection Unit is being enhanced to further strengthen security for Chinese citizens.' Pakistan announced forming the special police unit last year to protect foreigners, particularly Chinese nationals, living in the country amid increasing attacks on Chinese citizens. Qazi highlighted that foolproof security arrangements were in place across all industrial zones across the province. He said the federal government's guidelines regarding the movement of Chinese nationals should be followed strictly. 'Our offices are always open to Chinese citizens and government representatives,' Qazi said. Beijing has been pressing Pakistan in recent months to allow Chinese security personnel to protect the thousands of its citizens working there amid frustration over the attacks. Thousands of Chinese officials live and work in Pakistan, where Beijing has invested in the multi-billion-dollar CPEC project. The Taliban criticize neighboring countries for their mass expulsion of Afghans
ISLAMABAD: The Taliban on Wednesday criticized neighboring countries for the mass expulsion of Afghans, as Iran and Pakistan expel foreigners who they say are living there illegally. The two countries set deadlines and threatened them with arrest or deportation if they did not comply. They deny targeting Afghans, who make up significant numbers in both countries. Abdul Rahman Rashid, the Taliban government's deputy minister for refugees and repatriation, rebuked host countries for the mass expulsions and described the removal of Afghans as a 'serious violation of international norms, humanitarian principles, and Islamic values.' 'The scale and manner in which Afghan refugees have been forced to return to their homeland is something Afghanistan has never before experienced in its history,' Rashid told a press conference in Kabul. Nearly 1.8 million Afghans were forcibly returned from Iran in the past three months alone. A further 184,459 were sent back from Pakistan and over 5,000 were deported from Turkiye since the beginning of the year. Additionally, nearly 10,000 Afghan prisoners have been repatriated, mostly from Pakistan. The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said some 6 million Afghan refugees remain overseas. Natural disasters have swelled Afghanistan's refugee population. The ministry's director for policy and planning, Mahmood al Haq Ahadi, said some 13,500 families were internally displaced due to droughts, floods, and storms. 'When combined with prior displacements, the total number of internally displaced families in Afghanistan has now reached nearly 2.5 million,' Ahadi said. The ministry planned to send delegations to hold meetings with host countries focusing on legal support and resolving the challenges faced by Afghan asylum seekers. 'Our goal is to find sustainable solutions through dialogue and cooperation,' Ahadi said. Humanitarian agencies have warned that the scale and pace of returning Afghans is overwhelming already fragile support systems.
