
Coastal belt likely to record above normal rainfall, says Minister
Minister in-charge of Udupi district, Laxmi Hebbalkar, on Sunday, instructed the Udupi district administration to take all precautionary measures to face the monsoon as the coastal belt is likely to record above normal rainfall.
Speaking at a meeting called by her to review the monsoon preparedness, the Minister said that the administration should take steps required to prevent loss of life and property. It includes cutting trees which are likely to pose threat to the life of people.
The Minister instructed that the under-construction foot bridges in the district should be completed at the earliest. The government had released ₹ 8 crore for them, she said.
She said the government will release funds for the maintenance of electric poles and other works required during the monsoon.
The Minister asked the administration to constitute a task force to manage emergency situations and respond to the needs of people.
She instructed the officials to inspect the safety of all anganwadis, school buildings and electric poles before the monsoon. In all, three villages are facing drinking water issues, and they should be addressed, she said.
She distributed laptops to the students who scored highest marks in the SSLC examination this year. The government facilities to beneficiaries were also distributed on the occasion.
Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari, Superintendent of Police K. Arun and Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat Pratheek Bayal were present.

Fire and Rescue Services Director reviews monsoon preparedness
Seema Agrawal, Director General of Police and Director of Fire and Rescue Services, on Wednesday reviewed the operational preparedness of the force in the western region in handling emergencies during the southwest monsoon. She held a review meeting with district officers from five districts of the western region, namely Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Erode and Dindigul at the District Fire Office on State Bank Road in the city. Ms. Agrawal, on her maiden visit to the western region after assuming the post, reviewed the availability of firefighting equipment, fire tenders, rescue vehicles, aerial ladder platform (ALP) vehicles, power tools, etc., as the region is receiving southwest monsoon rain. Officers reported that all the five districts are equipped and fully prepared to deal with rain-related emergencies. An officer, who attended the meeting, said that Ms. Agrawal also enquired about the requirements for each district, including new vehicles, equipment and funds for repairs. An ALP vehicle of the Coimbatore south station, which can reach up to an 18-floor building for fire-fighting and rescues, was operated for demonstration on the District Fire Office premises.

Complete work on Sirsi-Kumta highway at earliest, NHAI told
District in charge secretary for Uttara Kannada district Sushma Godbole has directed the officials of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite and complete the work on Sirsi-Kumta highway and open it for traffic at the earliest. Chairing a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office in Karwar on Thursday, district in charge secretary expressed displeasure over the inordinate delay in the contractor completing the highway despite the district administration giving adequate time for the work. She directed the NHAI authorities to provide requisite help through advanced machineries to facilitate early completion of the road work. Pointing out that the temporary road laid near Bennehole bridge had been washed away due to heavy rains, she directed the officials to immediately initiate work to relay the road and open it for vehicular movement. Ms. Sushma Godbole emphasised the need for stopping the heavy load vehicles from entering the district as their movement was likely to cause damage to the bridges. She asked the NHAI authorities to report the matter to the district administration and police department on a weekly basis. Reviewing the Monsoon preparation in the district, she stressed the need for early release of compensation for rain damages and keep relief centres ready well in advance with all the paraphernalia. Sushma Godbole asked the officials to take necessary precautionary steps towards preventing COVID-19 cases. Pointing to the increase in caesarean deliveries in the district, she asked the health department officials to organise more awareness programmes on natural deliveries. Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshipriya, Superintendent of Police M. Narayan and others were present.

Schools, anganwadis to remain closed on May 29, 30 in Kodagu
The authorities in Kodagu have declared a holiday for schools, anganwadis, and PU colleges in the district for two days - on May 29 and 30 - due to incessant rains. Though schools were scheduled to reopen after summer vacations on May 29 and 30, it has been decided to declare a holiday due to heavy rains. The school authorities have to compensate for the closure by working on other holidays. However, SSLC examination 2 will be held as scheduled, and there is no change in the timetable, the authorities added. Meanwhile, the forest department has announced that the Dubare Elephant camp is closed for tourists due to incessant rains, till further orders.
