K'taka CM Siddaramaiah pulls up officials over child marriages

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has pulled up the Deputy Commissioners in the state for not keeping tab on child marriages, and slammed the officials for not taking steps and measures to prevent them. Addressing the Deputy Commissioners and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officers' review meeting on Friday, the Chief Minister questioned: "Why are instances of child marriage not coming to the notice of Deputy Commissioners? Are your subordinates not reporting these incidents to you? If they are not informing you, it implies you lack competence. It also means you have no control over your officials, and they do not fear you." "This year alone, 700 child marriages have taken place, and there have also been reports of girls becoming mothers during childhood. It has come to my attention that FIRs have not even been filed in many of these cases,' he said. 'How can 700 child marriages still be happening so many years after independence? There are laws to prevent child marriage. Yet, in some places, these laws are not being enforced effectively. Isn't this a failure?" the Chief Minister asked sternly. The CM further underlined that this year, 1,395 Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases have been registered in the state. Strict legal action must be taken in all such cases. Criminal charges should be filed against the accused, and efforts must be made to ensure appropriate punishment. He further stated that "the maternal mortality rate in our state is higher compared to Kerala". Although there has been a 30 per cent reduction compared to last year, further reduction must be achieved by increasing institutional deliveries, purchasing necessary medical equipment, and enforcing strict measures, he said. The CM further said that priority must be given to providing land for crematoriums and burial grounds. Where government land is unavailable, private land should be purchased and provided. Although strict instructions were already issued to cancel ineligible ration cards, the expected progress has not been made. Currently, about 74 per cent of ration cards in the state are BPL (Below Poverty Line) cards. Ineligible cardholders must be identified and removed so that eligible families can receive the benefits. However, there has not been satisfactory progress in this regard, the Chief Minister observed. Reviewing district-wise data on farmer suicides, the Chief Minister grew furious upon noticing that relief is pending in 13 cases. He demanded an explanation from the concerned Deputy Commissioners. The CM stated that in two districts, including Haveri, a total of 13 farmer suicide cases still await relief. The Chief Minister directed that these cases be resolved and compensation provided as soon as possible.

67 killed as Karnataka receives 150% excess pre-monsoon rainfall, 19.32 lakh people at risk

Bengaluru: Sixty-seven people have died in excessive pre-monsoon showers that Karnataka has received since April and an estimated 19.32 lakh people are at risk due to floods or landslides, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was told at a review meeting on Friday. During pre-monsoon between March and May, Karnataka expected 108 mm rainfall. Up until May 29, the state saw 270 mm rainfall, which is 150 per cent above normal. All 31 districts have received above-normal showers. "Rainfall in the month of May is the highest in 125 years," Siddaramaiah noted during a review meeting with all deputy commissioners and Zilla Panchayat chief executives. .Relief won't do - Bengaluru needs reform to end flooding.A total of 2,252 villages have been impacted by floods or landslides. As many as 1,702 homes have suffered damages. "There's no shortage of funds to compensate for house damages. There's Rs 1,000 crore available under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF)," Siddaramaiah said, directing DCs and CEOs to visit rain-hit places and oversee relief efforts. ."For homes that are completely damaged, the government will provide a compensation of Rs 1.25 lakh. Such families will get a new house built for them, for which DCs need to take the initiative," Siddaramaiah said. The government has constituted task forces at the gram panchayat-level comprising various departments to face natural disasters. "If all of them work in tandem, precautionary measures can be taken," the CM said. .Karnataka Dy CM DK Shivakumar proposes three drains to end flooding in encroachmentsSiddaramaiah warned DCs of action if they are tardy in clearing lake encroachments. Karnataka has 41,849 lakes that come under the minor irrigation department. Of them, 14,533 are under encroachment. Encroachment has been cleared in 6,808 lakes. "Despite having directed in the previous meeting that all lakes must be surveyed to identify encroachments, the progress achieved is below expectation," Siddaramaiah said. "Clearing encroachments would result in easy flow of water," he said. The CM lost his cool after finding that 11 districts recorded zero progress on encroachment removal. He directed Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh to initiate action against the concerned DCs and CEOs. Go to your district, CM tells DGRChief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday directed Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to rush to Dakshina Kannada. Rao is the minister in charge of the district where four people died due to heavy rainfall. Accordingly, Rao left Bengaluru and reached Mangaluru on Friday evening.

MGNREGA workers protest in Kalaburagi demanding payment of pending wages

Over a hundred rural labourers working under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) staged a protest on Friday in the premises of the Zilla Panchayat office in Kalaburagi, demanding immediate payment of six months' pending wages and the fulfilment of other long-standing demands. The protesters, comprising workers from various levels of the job scheme, raised slogans demanding job security, the formation of an employee cooperative society, and the urgent disbursement of wages. Speaking at the protest, many workers expressed their distress over the non-payment of wages since December 2024. 'It has become nearly impossible to sustain our livelihoods. We are surviving on loans. It is incorrect to inordinately delay the wages as it would adverse impact on the labourers who live from hand to mouth. The government must release our salaries immediately,' said one of the protestors. Ravishankar Lavate, president of the Karnataka State Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Workers' Welfare Association, while addressing the gathering expressed discontentment over the non-payment of wages. 'We have been working for 10 to 12 years for the implementation of the NREGA scheme across the rural areas in the district. For the past five to six months, we have not been paid for the work we have completed. Managing household responsibilities has become a significant challenge without a steady income. Many families are completely dependent on the job scheme for survival. The government should understand the seriousness of the issue and act without delay.' Following the protest, a memorandum outlining their grievances and addressed the Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat was submitted to the Zilla Panchayat Planning Director, Jagadevappa. Association vice-president Roshan B.K., State Representative Raju Vanti, and several local office-bearers and the labourers were present in the agitation.

Kalaburagi district receives four Praja Soudhas

In a significant boost to administrative infrastructure, Kalaburagi district is set to receive newly approved Praja Soudhas – the taluk administrative complexes – for four of its taluks – Kalagi, Yadrami, Kamalapur, and Shahabad. These buildings are envisioned to house all the taluk level offices under one roof. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah officially handed over the administrative approval letters for the construction of these facilities to Kalaburagi Deputy Commissioner Fouzia Taranum during a meeting of Deputy Commissioners and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officers in Bengaluru on Friday. Expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for sanctioning the buildings to his home district, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister and Kalaburagi in charge Priyank Kharge, in a Facebook post, said that the establishment of such integrated service centres under one roof would significantly benefit citizens in streamlining access to government services and making administration more accessible and efficient for the public.

Siddaramaiah launches real-time 'CM Dashboard' for development monitoring

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday launched the Chief Minister's Dashboard, a real-time governance platform offering integrated insights into the state's key development indicators. The launch took place during a review meeting with Deputy Commissioners and Zilla Panchayat CEOs at Vidhana Soudha, news agency PTI reported. Developed in-house by the Centre for e-Governance (CeG) and hosted at the platform uses a microservices-based architecture and integrates data from various departments via APIs, removing the need for manual entry. (Also Read: 6-year-old girl killed as heavy downpour causes landslides in Coastal Karnataka) The dashboard monitors Karnataka's performance across four main sectors: Economic Growth (investments, welfare beneficiaries) Legal/Judicial Management (RTI, Sakala disposals) Infrastructure Development (roads, irrigation, renewable energy) Citizen-Centric Governance (Guarantee Schemes, Janaspandana) Officials say the dashboard aims to enhance transparency and decision-making, allowing public access to track key government schemes and service delivery in real-time. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday reviewed the law and order situation in Mangaluru, days after the murder of a Muslim youth in Bantwal triggered tensions in the coastal region. Prohibitory orders remain in force in parts of Dakshina Kannada district until May 30. The Chief Minister met Congress MLC BK Hariprasad at his residence to discuss the unfolding situation. 'We held a general discussion on the current atmosphere in Mangaluru. It is essential to foster communal harmony—there should be no hatred between Hindus and Muslims,' Siddaramaiah told reporters after the meeting. He added that Hariprasad has been asked to visit the region to help in peace-building efforts. Referring to the pattern of retaliatory violence in Dakshina Kannada, Siddaramaiah assured strict legal action against all those involved, regardless of their political or social influence. 'The law is above all, and we will act accordingly,' he said. (Also Read: DK Shivakumar inspects flood-hit Manyata Tech Park, orders demolition of structures blocking water flow)
