'So depressing' - Dismay as 'yobs' trash park and gardens again
Arctic Park, off Arctic Road, Cowes, was found 'wrecked' this morning (Saturday).
It's thought vandals targeted the gardens overnight.
Passers-by discovered a picnic bench 'smashed up' and breeze blocks thrown around.

There were also broken tree branches and litter strewn across the gardens.
Bench smashed up at Arctic Park, Cowes (Image: Mark Young) Lin Hayward, who has helped to regenerate the park, said: "I wonder why we bother, at times.
"After many hours of trying to regenerate this park, this morning Arctic Park is a site of broken tree branches and litter and the picnic bench has been wrecked by some morons.
"What possible enjoyment do such idiots get from this kind of behaviour?"
Posting on Facebook, fellow Cowes resident Mark Young said: "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the yobs appear to have been at it again in Arctic Park."

Town mayor, Cllr Stuart Ellis, confirmed he had alerted an environment officer at the Isle of Wight Council.

Reform UK gets first police and crime commissioner after Tory defection
Reform UK has announced its first police and crime commissioner after a defection from the Conservative Party was unveiled at a press conference. Rupert Matthews, who holds the post in Leicestershire and Rutland, was introduced on Monday as having joined the party from the Conservatives. Before being elected in 2021, he served two years as as a European Parliament member for the Tories. He told the event at the Reform UK headquarters in Westminster he had been a Conservative member for more than 40 years. Mr Matthews was quick to turn his fire on modern crime policy, where he said police officers were all too often working with 'one hand tied behind their back'. He said: 'I daily face a fight against crime. I see ordinary, hard-working people burgled, robbed and mugged. Shoplifting is getting out of control. Anti-social behaviour is turning too many of our town centres into an apocalyptic wasteland of lawless Britain.' Mr Matthews said the 'dark heart of wokeness' needed to be removed from the criminal justice system. He said politicians in Britain had taken inspiration from 'Lebanon and Libya' for their policies. He said: 'It's almost as if they've looked at countries like Lebanon and Libya, the policies that have led to them becoming failed states and thought 'that looks good, let's try that here in Britain'.' He continued: 'The self-serving, self-entitled liberal elite who have let our country down time after time after time, are now on notice. Their day is almost done. Be they Conservative or Labour governments, everyone knows our politicians have failed us all. 'They have let this country down. They have let the British people down. Enough. Now is time for Reform.' The party also announced retired prison governor of Wormwood Scrubs, Vanessa Frake-Harris MBE, had joined the party and would be contributing to its law and order taskforce. Ms Frake-Harris, who joined the prison service in 1986, detailed increases in escapes, attacks on prison officers and increases of drugs, weapons and mobile phone finds in the last year. She said: 'Successive governments, Conservative and Labour, have driven the prison service to its knees. Through lack of investment, support and an unwillingness to allow people who know what they are doing to get the job done.' She continued: 'Our prisons are in a crisis caused by Labour and the Conservatives. What have their solutions been? They have let out 10,000 prisoners out of jail early. To let criminals out of jail before they even serve their full sentence is a disgrace.' A Labour spokesperson said: 'It's farcical that Farage can't say what his policies are, how much they would cost, or how they would even work. Reform aren't serious and don't have a clue as to how they would address the challenges facing working people.' The Conservative Party has been approached for comment.

Five Met police officers charged with GBH over hospital restraining incident
Five Met officers have been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm over an incident in which a man was restrained at an Islington hospital. The officers are charged with two counts each of GBH, contrary to Sections 18 and 20 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, the force announced on Monday. They are PC David Hollands, PC Anthony Bhar, PC Robert Wall, PC Elena Cebotari, and PC Dan Penfold. PC Bhar is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, August 5. The remaining four will appear at the same court on Friday, August 15. All the officers are based on the Central North Command. The charges follow an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into the incident on April 3, 2023, when a man in his 50s was detained under the Mental Health Act having reportedly been seen to be behaving erratically in the street, threatening members of the public and setting fire to his clothing. While in hospital, the man became agitated and was restrained by officers. He was subsequently released from hospital the following month. Chief Superintendent Jason Stewart, who leads policing for Central North Command, said: 'It is always a matter of deep regret when a member of public is injured through an interaction with officers and I know this matter will cause concern. We must now let criminal proceedings proceed unhindered while continuing to maintain an open dialogue with the community.' As is routine in such circumstances, the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards was informed and a referral was made to the IOPC who launched an independent investigation resulting in the referral of files to the CPS and a determination that their actions amounted to gross misconduct.

Saudi Arabian student, 20, stabbed to death while on placement in Cambridge
A Saudi Arabian student has been stabbed to death while on a 10-week placement in Cambridge. Mohammed Algasim, 20, was pronounced dead at Mill Park at 12.01am on Saturday and a 21-year-old man has since been charged with murder. Cambridgeshire Police said Algasim had been on a 10-week placement studying in Cambridge. EF International Language Campuses Cambridge, a private school offering English language courses to overseas students, said it was 'deeply saddened' to confirm one of its students had died. 'Unprovoked attack' Cambridgeshire Police said on Monday that it is believed Algasim was 'stabbed in an unprovoked attack'. A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Tuesday. The force said Chas Corrigan, of Holbrook Road, Cambridge, has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. Corrigan is due to appear at Peterborough magistrates' court later on Monday. A 50-year-old man, also from Cambridge, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He remains in custody. Floral tributes have been left at the scene. EF International Language Campuses Cambridge told The Telegraph: 'We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our adult students was fatally injured in a public space. 'Emergency services responded immediately, but the student tragically passed away. 'We are working closely with the local police, who are investigating the incident and have confirmed they made arrests. 'The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority. We are providing support to all students and staff affected by this tragic event and have organised counselling sessions.' The private school added: 'We will not be commenting further while the investigation is ongoing.' Det Insp Dale Mepstead, of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: 'The investigation remains ongoing, and we continue to urge anyone with information who has not yet come forward to contact us.'
