Tourist safety in Sabah needs urgent fix, says Tiong King Sing after uncovering serious enforcement lapses
SIBU, Aug 17 — Immediate reforms are needed to safeguard tourist safety in Sabah, said Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. He advised Sabah authorities to step up the necessary actions to enhance the state's tourism image. 'Following a two-day joint sea and land enforcement operation, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture held a meeting with the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and relevant enforcement agencies to address tourism safety issues, illegal operations and enforcement in Sabah. 'In that meeting, I raised several serious weaknesses regarding tourism safety in Sabah, where the safety of tourists is seen as insufficiently protected,' he said in a statement. According to him, statistics showed between 2023 and July 2025, Sabah recorded several tourism-related accidents that caused multiple deaths and injuries. 'In 2023 alone, there were 14 incidents resulting in six deaths and nine injuries; in 2024, 11 incidents with nine deaths and 28 injuries; while in 2025, up to July, there were 23 incidents with two deaths and two injuries. 'These frequent accidents highlight weak safety management and regulatory oversight, which undermine travellers' confidence and damage Sabah's international tourism reputation,' he said. Tiong said during the two-day operation, he personally led officers from the Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division and Immigration Department, police and other agencies on inspections around Tawau. He said the operation revealed widespread illegal practices, including overloaded tour buses without tour guides; foreigners renting local licences and operating behind the scenes; foreign divers working illegally; non-tourism vehicles carrying passengers; and boats operating with approval. Other issues included alleged corruption in the Immigration Department, lax monitoring of resorts and homestays without insurance protection and unauthorised fee collection on certain islands. — The Borneo Post

Sabah eyes bigger slice of Singapore tourism with direct Scoot flights to Sandakan
SINGAPORE, Aug 17 — The Sabah Tourism Board (STB), in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, is in talks with low-cost carrier Scoot to launch direct Singapore–Sandakan route in a move aimed at boosting tourist arrivals from the city-state. Sabah Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment and STB chairman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, said the route would boost Sabah's visibility among Singaporeans and attract other international travellers to travel through Changi Airport. 'Sabah is not just about Mount Kinabalu or Sipadan, but also Sandakan – a gateway to nature. We have diverse attractions. A lot of Singaporeans love nature, and what better place to visit than Sandakan,' he told Bernama after launching the Sabah Fest 2025 – Singapore Edition, here on Saturday. Joniston expressed hope that travel agents in Singapore would showcase Sabah's wide-ranging attractions, from the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, by introducing exciting travel packages. As of May this year, he said more than 13,000 Singaporeans had visited Sabah, and he hoped the number would continue to increase in line with the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026) campaign. 'Tourism Malaysia Singapore in collaboration with the Sabah Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STTOS), together with other agencies, are working hard to help promote Sabah,' he added. He also expressed hope that Scoot and AirAsia would consider increasing the frequency of their Singapore-Kota Kinabalu direct flights. Joniston said the three-day Sabah Fest 2025 – Singapore Edition, held at Marina Square from Friday and organised by STTOS, offers Singaporeans a glimpse of Sabah's culture, tourism and trade ahead of the full-month celebration in the state next month. At the event, Joniston also launched the 'Stamp and Feel Sabah' campaign – a stamp rally programme introduced by STTOS to encourage Singaporean travellers to explore Sabah. Travellers can collect a stamp booklet from Tourism Malaysia's Singapore office, earn stamps by visiting listed attractions, and redeem rewards at the STTOS office while stocks last. Meanwhile, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Singapore Datuk Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar said the High Commission is proud to support Sabah Fest 2025 as it aligns with its mission to foster bilateral ties through cultural exchange, tourism promotion, and economic cooperation. Khaled: G2G MOUs To Avoid Involvement Of Agents, Middlemen In Defence Asset Procurement
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The Defence Ministry is expanding cooperation between countries through the signing of Government-to-Government (G2G) Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) related to defence products, said its minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said the initiative aims to avoid the involvement of agents of middlemen in the procurement of national defence assets. 'The MADANI government remains consistent in its efforts to improve governance and ensure transparency, including in purchases of national defence assets,' he said in a statement today. During today's 60th Anniversary Parade of Rejimen Gerak Khas (RGK) at Kem Iskandar in Mersing, Johor, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, issued a stern reminder to the Ministry of Defence not to repeat past mistakes in the procurement of military assets, particularly used aircraft that could endanger the lives of pilots and military personnel. The monarch emphasised that all parties involved in military procurement must ensure evaluations are conducted transparently, based on market prices and the actual needs of the armed forces, and not merely on the recommendations of agents or those with vested interests. Mohamed Khaled said the Defence Ministry upholds the King's decree and is committed to continuously adhering to the principles of accountability and integrity in the procurement of national defence assets. He said some of the immediate steps that had been taken and are being taken include strengthening the ministry's internal policies and procedures to ensure transparency, ethical compliance and strict guidelines. In addition, any new proposals will undergo a comprehensive study, involving the end user, namely the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), including aspects on suitability, lifespan, safety and the technology used. 'Any procurement of defence assets is also made based on MAF requirements or user-driven,' he said.
