Vandals cause "substantial" damage to Butler County golf course greens
Suspected vandals could face felony charges after causing significant damage to the Lake Arthur Golf Club in Butler County. "Somebody poured some type of substance onto several greens that caused a substantial amount of damage," said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Bertha Cazy. The brown dead spots on the putting surface stick out like a sore thumb. "We're thinking it has something to do with some type of vinegar substance, something acidic that would cause damage to the greens," Cazy said. (Photo: KDKA) Investigators said five of the course holes were damaged and fixing them won't be cheap. "No, this is going to be up into the several thousands for them to repair," Cazy said. Course owners declined to comment on the situation, and the links were open on Friday. Meanwhile, investigators are looking for those responsible. "It could be kids or a disgruntled customer, we're really not sure, we don't really have any suspects at this time," Cazy said. "So we are asking for the public's help, if anyone knows anything or heard anyone talking about doing that damage, please let us know," Cazy said. Once apprehended, Cazy said those who defaced the greens could face a lot more than a slap on the wrist. "Depending on how much money it's going to cost to repair that, and it's going to be in the several thousands, which would be at least a third-degree felony," Cazy said.

Man who pepper-sprayed mom and baby on Queens subway held on $50K bail
The man who allegedly pepper-sprayed a young mother and her baby on an M train in Queens will remain behind bars until he posts bail, authorities said. Cops arrested Edward Vargas, 34, on Thursday. He is accused of dousing a 25-year-old woman and her 11-month-old baby girl with pepper spray, hitting them in the face and arm, last Friday on a southbound M train as the train approached the Court Square-23rd St. station in Long Island City, police said. 'It is particularly outrageous when our children are attacked,' Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. 'As alleged, the defendant chose to retaliate against the victims with pepper spray because he did not get what he wanted. Families have every right to use the subway safely without fear of random violence.' The young woman told police that that Vargas approached her when she was holding her daughter waiting for the train at the 36th St. M and R subway station and asked to borrow her cellphone, according to the criminal complaint against him. But when the woman ignored him, Vargas followed her onto the train and sat right across from her and her baby before pulling a pepper-spray canister from a black bag and spraying her and her little girl with the noxious substance, causing the baby to cry, the complaint states. Afterward, mother and child were left with a burning sensation to the eyes, difficulty breathing and skin irritation, according to the complaint. Vargas, who lives in Astoria, was charged with two counts of assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child, according to court documents. A judge ordered him held on $50,000 cash bail and $150,000 bond. His next court appearance is July 1. In other recent subway mayhem, a man arrested for allegedly trying to kiss a female straphanger's toes while exposing himself at a Greenwich Village subway station was released one day after being nabbed by police. Dexter Betancourt, 37, was granted supervised release after the offenses were deemed not bail eligible.

Ninth escaped New Orleans inmate has been arrested, officials say
Police on Friday captured one of the New Orleans parish inmates who escaped six weeks ago in a jailbreak Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry called the worst in recent state history. Law enforcement agencies located and arrested 33-year-old Antoine Massey at a residence in New Orleans on Friday, authorities announced in a press release. The New Orleans Police Department was expected to give a press conference later Friday night. Massey will be taken to a secure state correctional facility, Louisiana State Police said. At the time of his escape, Massey had been facing charges of domestic abuse battery involving strangulation, motor vehicle theft and a parole violation, authorities said, adding that additional charges may follow. The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service and the New Orleans Police Department located and arrested Massey on Friday, state police said. Nine of the 10 Orleans Parish Prison inmates have now been recaptured following their May 16 jailbreak from the Orleans Justice Center, which went unnoticed for hours. Only one, Derrick Groves, remains on the lam. The group of inmates escaped by yanking open a faulty cell door, removing a toilet, crawling through a hole in the wall behind it and scaling a barbed wire fence in the early morning hours. State and local officials have criticized the management of Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson, who has largely blamed the jailbreak on poor infrastructure and the inability to make needed improvements at the 10-year-old, $150 million facility. Authorities have arrested at least 16 people who are accused of aiding the escape of the inmates. Some of the inmates were found within the city's famous French Quarter and others elsewhere within the state of Louisiana, while two of them were found in Texas following extensive surveillance efforts by the U.S. Marshals, authorities have said.
